  1. It's still a point of contention. Also uncertain is if we're getting a pitcher back
  2. In 2004 Pierre hit .380 in (non-sacrifice) bunt attempts. In 2005 he hit .431 when bunting for a hit. This is interesting stat: We know Dusty likes guys who can excute a bunt. The tall grass in the Wrigley field IF will only help Pierre. If by "help" you mean "hurt", I agree. Pierre hits ground balls. On the ground. In the grass. they will go slowly. Fielders will get them. they will not go through holes to the OF. He will be thrown out I was referring to: When Pierre puts down a bunt While I've already said it will help his bunting, there's only so many times a season you can bunt before teams play in enough on you that bunting is asking to be thrown out. In addition, bunting a lot will lower your infield hits by getting the IF to play shallowly, which is a type of hit people are thinking he'll be getting more of.

I wonder if management thinks about that sort of thing and tries to crunch some numbers on that
  4. Well, I'd doubt that the dodgers want him now, and if we get bradley the only trades left to make are for a ss/2b or SP...

  6. But torre is... well, I guess it's not entirely fair to say he's a coward because he won't do that...
  7. In the case of Milton Bradley, we know that a better player was available and at a much lower cost. Really? The most recent reports have been Bradley for Zito. Is Zito really a lower cost than Mitre/Nolasco/Pinto? The most recent reports have the A's showing no interest in such a trade
  8. I'm not sure I want Bradley now. I want a 30 HR 280/350 guy in right and I'm not sure Bradley fits that bill. Odds that hendry can make a trade for bradley: 99% Odds that hendry can make a trade for one of the big sluggers: not so good get bradley, keep trying to get another RF, and heck, dump pierre off on someone later if you manage it. Not that hendry will
  9. You forgot to add "4 years ago" to that sentence. And the funny part would be that they wouldn't even have the best SS in the AL at this point if they do that.
  10. pierre could post the lowest slg to obp ratio of any cubs player in my lifetime this season. His swings will be killed by the grass and he'll bunt constantly.
  11. i've heard other people say that, and i don't understand why. won't the slow grass keep his slap hits from getting through? Wouldn't they die in limbo between fielders like infield hits and swinging bunts. I'd bet heavily against it. Long grass+speed is useful for bunting
  12. What players are you speaking of, on the trade block, that'll bite at an offer of Nolasco/Pinto? Wilkerson and Bradley. Walker career leadoff: .291/.349/.443/.792 Pierre career leadoff: 304/.354/.375/.729 Walker's better, it's pretty clear. If Baker was going to leadoff Walker, he would have led off last year. It's not going to happen. Give it up. You mean like baker had him leading off in 2004?
  13. If he has any clue about how best to maximize the lineup, then it should be Murton. so... basically what you're saying is Murton bats 7th next year. 8th. Definitely. Gotta maximize that 8th spot. It's a weakness in most other lineups, but in the Cubs lineup? It's as good as a solid 2hole hitter. well, at least he's setting the table for Z and Prior. Z can slug
  14. Not only did we post the same thing, but used the same title and exactly the same post. You're scaring me. I have my scary mind-reading powers. Burn the witch! first let's see if she can swim with a stone tied to her ankle. :D Knight: "So if she weighs the same as a duck then . . ." Peasant "she's Made of wood." Knight "and therefore. . ." Peasant "A witch, burn her!" I don't know, something about the baseball offseason inspiring memories of Monty Python doesn't give me great confidence in 2006. Leading me to think of hendry, obp, and how sheeps' bladders can be used to prevent earthquakes.

  16. Yep. But it was still working for a while after you disabled? I'm glad I don't have to try to figure this out
  17. You don't. that's why at some point, without any guarantees, you have to stick the rookie in the batting order and see if he can do it.
  18. Isn't nomar better than anyone the yankees have for DH at this point?
  19. huh? nomar still has an arm. not the most accurate arm, but he wouldn't have a problem getting it far enough
  20. the hillarious thing is that the A's have succeeded in recent years by applying basic business sense to baseball. I'd consider that QED
  21. Average offenses that have won titles in this decade: white sox, florida, and that's it. they both had great pitching. Did those two teams have above average defenses? The sox certainly didn't seem to, but it's hard to quantify.
  22. TECHNICALLY, Furcal is the 3rd highest SS in baseball behind Jeter (and come on...ARod ain't a 3rd baseman, he is a SS). No, "technically" arod is a third baseman. that's what he plays. Edit: and if you hadn't added "technically" you would have had a case.
  23. my "view new posts" has broken in the past 12 hours or so.
  24. Your first sentence is absolutely correct. Far as I can tell, so are the other three sentences. blasphemy Quite literally.
  25. First, I'm glad you know that the only reason Walker is being shopped is becasue the Sox won with speed and defense, even though they really won with pitching. Second, there may be legitimate reasons for not liking the job Hendry has done. However, I get the feeling that the reason many on this board bash him regularly is because he may have a different approach to valuing players than do many here. In other words, there may be philospohical differences. And instead of calling it that and reasonably acknowledging that there's a chance Hendry might know what he's doing, some posters call him names. God knows none of the posters here who disagree with Hendry can be wrong in evaluating a player or mistaken in their approach. Finally, if Hendry refuses to see Walker's worth he's got a ton of company, ie all the other GMs who gave up on the guy. There's no chance none or all of those guys are right, is there? I guess not. That's why they are GMs and we are sitting around posting on a message baord playing at being a GM. Saying that something is a result of "philosophical differences" doesn't preclude the possibility of one side being wrong. The world isn't flat. People who practice faith healing die of curable diseases. Walker helps the team score runs.
