  1. Wow. This could have been me. After 2008, I destroyed all the memorabilia except for the jerseys which I put away and haven't touched since....... Except I ordered a Rizzo jersey last week. There is hope.
  2. So many blogs/websites/boards devoted to the Cubs have fallen by the wayside or seem ready too. This is one of the few that has stuck around. I am glad; it's one of the few where I have learned something. I really didn't know much about stats until I started reading this board. Sometimes the arguments get a little intense for me. But what can you expect? I predate Fred by a few, and I just don't see the point in spending the energy. Inevitably, the mellowness will come to you folks too. I am sorry to hear about the tech problems. This is my third account I think; my first two got lost in tech meltdowns. I can sympathize. I used to be a board administrator for a computer users forum in another life. I won't ever do that again. I hope there's enough stability that membership can build. I have noticed that the game threads aren't as long as they once were; i don't blame you because it has been hard to watch. Today against the Cards was disgusting. I don't post much. I just enjoy the chatter. Thanks Tim.
  3. Whew. Good to hear. I have bad those; they are scary and very painful.
  4. how's Byrd's limp looking lately? huh? Go to your rooms !! Both of you !!
  5. Why is there such a decline in interest here, but not other sites? Where did everyone go?This might catch me some flak, but honesty reigns: NSBB can be a very polarizing message board at times. There are, without a shadow of a doubt, many extremely intelligent, humorous and well-spoken people that post on NSBB. There's also a fair amount of elitism and a subtle bullying streak aimed towards specific members and people who aren't as well-versed in "advanced" baseball. Not saying that NSBB is a bad place - quite the contrary. It's just flawed like people in general and everything else on earth. And of course I can't say for certain that people who used to post here regularly did leave due to the above ... but I can say that if I were to leave, it would be a factor. Witnessing the alternatives first-hand, NSBB is the best Cubs board I've found. I couldn't agree more. Me too.
  6. I had planned back in march to travel to see a game at Wrigley. Had the money all set aside and then this season happened. Last week I had to have part of my central AC replaced. Cost $$$$. Well there went the trip money. Meh. I really don't feel much regret. Our local college team is on it's way through the collegiate playoffs. They may not win it all. But I don't care. It's been fun, the guys still care and work their butts off. When this is over, the local minor league team fires up. My advice: find some close by baseball to watch. The beer is cheaper.
  7. I cannot remember the last time i posted in a game thread if ever. Anyway, I became a Cubs fan back when Ron Santo played. So I have suffered, usually in silence, for a long time. My feelings are exactly mirrored by the above quotation. I have had enough. At 63, I simply don't have as much time left as do some of you. I want to spend it on other things. I dropped Extra innings and now spend my money on UFC Pay per Views. As least those fighters seem to care. I don't think most MLB players do. I highly recommend that all of you view "A Bronx Tale." There's a scene in it where this wise guy advises a kid why he shouldn't care about "the Mick". I saw That right after the blow up in October 2008. Changed my view forever. If some of you haters want to argue that I am not much of a fan, fine, that's your privilege. As far as I am concerned, s c r e w you.
  8. I thought it was very good quality. I can't believe that WGN HD was not on Direc TV until now. What was the holdup? It could be a band width issue. Direct TV launched three new satellites a while back and has been bringing them online is stages. The same could be true for cable; the local Comcast is phasing out analog cable; so everyone will have to have a box; but that also frees up band width for more HD. Then of course there's the legal agreements with the various providers. Then for Direct TV there's the advertising war with Dish; that may explain the timing more than anything.
  9. Just checked the company's web site and found this.
  10. As in Jeff Weaver? :-))
  11. I have a Facebook account. I currently am working hard to ignore it. The friend requests and such are too intrusive. Some requests have come from people I have never met. WTF? There's also the problem that I have been "found" by people I would rather have not ever heard from again. When some of you are a bit older, you will come to understand how this can be a problem. While I know that many people who are older than Fred have started digging social networking sites, I guess I am atypical because I cannot stand them. So I am a dinosaur; maybe the next comet strike will kill me off. EDIT: I just found out how to delete an account. :)
  12. Grosse Tete? I thought Katrina had wiped that place away! :D
  13. This may sound like a cruel question, but I am curious. Do you think guys like Gregg even care when they do badly? There have been other discussions here about other players, especially Soriano, where some posts have suggested those rich guys don't care.
  14. I remember that day like it was yesterday !!! CUBS beat Cincinnati 4-1 on a Sunday afternoon behind a complete game performance by Fergie Jenkins, and the fans refused to leave the park after game !! Fergie had 2 hits and a rbi himself, while holding the Reds to just 3 hits. The only thing that spoiled Fergie's day was 4th inning HR he gave to Vada Pinson. It was the final game of a 12 game home stand that saw the CUBS take 11 out of 12. When the home stand started, The CUBS were tied for 3rd place with the Giants, 5.5 games behind the Cardinals and 4.0 games behind the Reds. At the end of the home stand, the CUBS were tied for first with the Cardinals, 4.0 games ahead of the Reds, and 5.5 games ahead of the Giants. I thought I had died and gone to heaven !! Then we went down to Atlanta and won the first game...... and then..... well..... it wasn't too good after that. [/sigh] I was in Chicago that day and attended the game. If I hadn't I might never have gotten "Cubs fever". Well if Fred can survive this long so can I. :-))
  15. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> Penguins are freaking awesome! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: Unlike a certain baseball team we follow.
  16. Bookmarked just now. Good luck with this. 8-)
  17. I think Crosby is freaking awesome.
  18. One of the choices should have been: Yes, with another team. :-))
  19. Stats are never worthless. This team, perhaps. :D
  20. [nitpick]It was actually 1972. They had winning seasons every year from 1967 through 1972, then beginning with 1973 they didn't have another winning season until 1984 (there was one 81-81 season in that stretch). [/nitpick] Were spoiled now. growing up on the Cubs teams of the 80's and 90's, I was just happy when the Cubs won 1 here and there. Hell, they didnt have to, if my favorite players had a good game, that would suffice as well. Besides '89 and the marginal '98 team, I really didnt grow up with a winning team. Then 2003 came along, and that winning thing that other teams seemed to do so often felt good. Once I got that taste in my mouth, there was no turing back, and while 2006 wasnt much worse than most of those crap teams Id accepted all those years, Id finally developed expectations, and failure wouldnt do anymore. not one bit. Exactly. I became a different fan after 2003. Not in terms of how much I watched or followed, but how I followed the Cubs. Of course we pay $50 a ticket for the bleachers now so maybe we deserve a winner? No? Wow. You guys have said exactly what I feel.
  21. New Orleans? Hmm... Since both Vance and I live outside the hurricane zone, you will have two places to evacuate to if need be. :D
  22. Well done Vance. I appreciate your energy and enthusiasm. 8-)
  23. http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/2008/writers/frank_deford/06/18/cubbies/Piniella.jpg Lou: "Uh, what's with the negativity?" 40+ years of following the Cubs (for me); that's what is with the negativity. When I saw that injury I had exactly the same feeling as when Nomar went down. But what do I know? Gee I am glad I have other things to do.
