Cubs lead by 22 runs this season. They also have a BA that is .018 above the D-backs and a SLG that is .038 above. The D-Backs have a slight (.002) advantage in OBP. I'd say the Cubs offense is better. You know what I don't get? We are ahead of the White Sox in OBP, SLG, and BA, but they have seriously outscored us. What's up with that? Sorry for this in the middle of a game thread, but... A bit of luck and timely hitting? BP's combined stat of equivalent average accounts for hitting and baserunning and can be converted into equivalent runs. By this metric the Cubs are a better offense (7th in ML), but have scored 23 fewer runs than expected. The Sox have the 2nd worst EQA in the ML, but have scored 23 runs more than they should have with that offense. This is part of the explanation - though execution may play some role! White Sox lead MLB in Sacrafice Flys with 36. Cubs are 26th with 22. They get it done with a runner at 3rd and less than two outs. Cubs don't. (usually Pose after getting a hit and stealing... he's perfect on the season when stealing 3rd base... something like 17 for 17) EDIT: Thanks Cedeno for proving my point! :x
