Its easy. 1) Defense is not our problem. 2) Maddux's contract was up after this year, so his millions come off the book, we could spend it somewhere else. 3) Izturis's contract is in the range of $4-5.5 million for the next two years for production (both defense and offense) that is the same as Cedeno's who would do it at a fraction the cost. edit: 4) we could have had one of Los Angeles's better prospects (who were cheap and have a WHOLE LOT more upside then Izturis) insted by most accounts. How the hell do we know that we could have had one of LAs better prospects? Just because somethings been reported doesen't make it the truth. Will Carroll is very reliable. But even if you don't want to believe we could have had Kemp or Guzman, please address the other 3 points. So if they are such great prospects and be can't misses, then do you really think Hendry would pass them up? I agree with point 1. Point 2. What was Maddux making this year, 9 million? So now there is 4.5 more to spend. Point 3. If we upgrade the outfield are Izturis and Cedeno going to hurt us offesively? counterpoints: 2) we could have had $9 mil, and Hendry is ultimately paying $4 mil more then he needed to (see Ronny Cedeno) 3) I would love to see Hendry upgrade the OF significantly enough to make up for Cedeno and Izturis, I just have no idea how unless he fleeces Florida for Cabrera........ -
what has he said?? the part last inning where he said that the trades today obviously wouldn't improve the cubs on offense, but they'd make them a better defensive team. I dont have the game on TV tonite. how did the interview with hendry go?

I didnt say I knew, I said BY MOST ACCOUNTS in any event, the first 3 reasons would have been enough for me to avoid the trade in the first place........

LA GM: Well, Jim, we have a few guys @ LAs Vegas, Joel Guzman or some kid named Kemp. What do you think about one of those guys? Jim: Well, I guess I was thinking of someone, well, abit more talented. What about Cesar Izturis? I like him, he can catch the ball. We'll even pick up a good portion of Maddux's salary... LA GM: (passed out because of sheer surprise. Isnt found until Monday afternoon at 3 pm) Jim: Hello? Hello? shoot..maybe i asked for too much..... LA GM Assistant: hey, dude, you ok??? LA GM: (slowly awakes from a 2 day slumber) woa..man..I had the weirdest dream. I had a dream I was talking to Jim Hendry and he wanted to take Izturis off my hands and basically give me Maddux...weird. LA GM Assistant: Had to have been a dream. Jim isnt that stupid. why is your phone off the hook? (LA GM and LA GM Assistantglance at eachother) LAGM: quick, GET JIM ON THE PHONE!! and the deal is made. seriosly, we got hoodwinked.

Actually, the rumor was he'd waive it for any team willing to pick up the option, but only for the teams you listed without doing so. ooooooooo thats delightful. I really am not that big of a fan of Abreu, but I do see Hendry wasting his time with the Maddux trade. To take on that much salary and ignoring players that couold have genuinely helped this club is morAnic.

of course not. he'll just walk away at the end of the season with the cubs getting nothing for him. oh, and the infield will be neifi-cedeno-izturis-lee. sweeeeeeeeet......... and on the otherside, LA traded for Lugo too, with GUZMAN how in the f can a small market team like TB do this and yet we have idiot in charge getting us Izturis??????????

I think Maddux forced Hendry's hand on this. He had to of. seriously. Hendry isnt THAT stupid, is he? this it the reverse of the Grud for Hundley deal. OMG..its KARMA

Yep. Neifi starting at 2nd from now until the end of 2007 is the odds on favorite result of this deal, by a wide margin. :shock: wow. I completely agree with goony

You're right. They should have let him walk away a free agent with zero returns, because that is so much more brilliant. Hendry did the right thing. He got some value out of what would be no value. Let a kid play 2B for the rest of the year and see what's happening. a) I'm not referring to this deal ONLY, but more to the idea that they (the Cubs) completely mis-used Walker. b) F-the coaches kid @ 2nd base. you KNOW Neifi will be playing that position.

Excellent post. I agree with every word. I only disagree with point 1) There is plenty Maddux has and hasnt taught the kids I'm sure. Why not give them more exposure to him? I would much rather take your point 2) and replace Rothschild with Maddux, by firing Larry and leting Maddux player/coach, if he would. That being said, if we could get a great prospect for him in a trade, by alllll means, full speed ahead on it. But we should still fire Larry, and Moe, and Curly for that matter........
