  1. This article is right on the mark. It's what made Joe Borowski a terrific choice. Make your closer your third or fourth best bullpen arm use your best arms in the high leverage situations.
  2. I want to see the Cubs get to 95+ wins. IF the Brewers or Cardinals somehow caught fire and overtook the Cubs, so be it. 88-90 wins would be a disappointment - even if that's enough to take the wildcard.
  3. Not counting E Patt's three-day trip, the Cubs added seven last year. Four pitchers: Ohman, Hart, Gallagher, & Pignatiello Three position players: Cedeno, Soto, & Fuld. Assuming they bring up a similar number: Pie Hoffpauir Dubois Guzman Wuertz Marshall or Cotts (assuming Lieber is activated and one of them is sent down until 9/1) & one of: Hart, R. Hill, C. Fox, K. Hill, J. Fox, Fuld
  4. At least 90 minutes of rain before they get to work on the field. I think that's the game.
  5. At this rate it's a 90 pitch CG SO before the rain starts. :(
  6. There's a 2+ hour rain delay in our future.
  7. He won't net the Cubs a pick. It's too likely that he'd accept arbitration if it were offered.
  8. Should've thrown to first and let Lee run CC down at 2nd.
  9. you're assuming that he'd get playing time, which is not a good assumption Edmonds is breaking down.
  10. Pie gets his September call-up rakes and makes the post-season roster.
  11. That's right, but it's also not like selling a privately held company. Similar fiduciary obligations/issues apply as in the sale of a public company. The fact that those harmed by acceptance of a lower bid are employees of the Tribune makes it all the less likely.
  12. Exactly. And the human calls the fault half a second after the tone. Makes their job easy, doesn't it? It'd be a hell of a lot more consistent, but less interesting IMO.
  13. An "I TOLD YOU SO" on your first post? That's a new one. Told who? I feel so foolish and ashamed. Maybe it was "Scrubby Cedono's" .959 OPS at AAA last season at age 24 compared to Theriot's '06 AAA .746 OPS at age 26 that duped me? Oh wait, I forgot to multiply Theriot's numbers by the 110% max effort/grit factor... Nope that doesn't explain it either. Hmmmm. Who won the Open? Is Tiger coming back soon?
  14. I don't think the Red Sox value has diminished. It probably enhances value in the short-run (5 years).
  15. TT We must be working from significantly different numbers: Soto $0.50 Lee $13.00 DeRosa $5.50 Ramirez $16.65 Theriot $0.50 Soriano $17.00 Pie $0.45 Fukudome $12.00 Cedeno $0.50 Fontenot $0.50 Johnson $1.50 Hoffpauir $0.45 Blanco/FA $1.20 Zambrano $18.75 Harden $7.00 Lilly $13.00 Dempster $10.00 Hill/Marshall/other $0.45 Wood $10.00 Marmol $0.60 Gaudin $2.75 Wuertz $1.20 Samardzija/Hart/Ceda/Other $0.42 Marshall $0.45 Cash in Marquis trade: $3.5 Total: $137.9 mil.
  16. If you factor Hardin and Gaudin you're looking at almost ~139 million. The Cubs are paying those two ~3.5 mil. in '08. Harden's option is $7 mil. and Guadin is arb. eligible.
  17. Well, when Lilly and Fukudome each get 5M raises, Z, Marquis, and Soriano each get 3M raises, ARam gets a 2M raise, and then you've got Harden's money and possibly resigning Wood, it probably becomes a big deal. But I think thats been the plan all along...afterall, it'll be someone elses problem. Exactly. Unless payroll is bumped to $140 mil. next season it's Wood -OR- Dempster, not both. And that's assuming 1) Pie and/or Johnson in CF and 2) you replace Howry and Eyre with young arms (Samardzija/Guzman/Cotts/Marshall/Ascanio et. al.).
  18. BA had PHL ranked as the #22 overall system before the season began. Cardenas, Outman, & Spencer are PHL's #2, #4, & #28 overall prospects. PHL's best prospect is pitcher Carlos Carrasco. Jason Donald & Lou Marson are also solid prospects, and it appears PHL was able to hold onto them. That's a lot to give up for a guy who profiles like Adam Eaton.
  19. It's not a good ballpark for anybody to pitch in. But yeah, low K rate and only a 1.3 g/f ratio is not good for that park.
  20. Parking in the Wrigley neighborhood is not that difficult if you get there early and are willing to walk up to a mile. Be careful reading the parking restriction signs- they vary block to block. Some are limited to night games, others to nights and weekends, and some are restricted 24/7. I'd try to park west of the ballpark and plan on taking one of the main N/S streets like Western Avenue down toward your hotel. This is an easier exit after the game than Lake Shore Drive or anything East. Or you could use the DeVry shuttle. "The Cubs operate a shuttle and parking service at the DeVry University campus located off Addison St. and Western Avenue for all weekend and night games. For $6.00 you can park your vehicle and all occupants ride the shuttle free to and from the ballpark. Take advantage of the savings with the easy in and out of our secure remote parking facility. The first shuttle leaves two and one half hour prior to the game. The shuttle runs for one hour after all Night Games and for two hours after all Weekend Day Games." http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/chc/ballpark/directions.jsp
  21. It's much more than semantics in this case. MLB hosing Zell is one thing. Hosing the 19,000 employees of the Tribune is quite another. I'm assuming what is good for Zell is good for the shareholders in this case. Both would want the best price for their stock, no? I agree. Which is why I think MLB is in a tough spot if it denies a significantly higher bid from Cuban. The ownership complicates the situation for MLB in favor of Cuban's bid, particularly when many of those shareholders have a direct voice in the media. Imagine the political fallout if we find out that Cuban bid $1 bil. and MLB accepted Canning's bid for $700 mil.?

  23. GreatBanc is the party that's like to sue if Cuban's bid is snubbed. They're the Trustee on behalf of the Trust that owns the Tribune. The Tribune's creditors are also potential parties to a suit. I suspect that MLB's ant-trust exemption makes winning any lawsuit diffult, but if it turns out that Cuban's bid is substantially higher than Canning's, I'd be surprised if there wasn't litigation.
  24. He can't sue over that, it's not an open auction. It's a private, non-regulated club, Zell can sell to whoever he wants. And you should hate Reinsdorf for lots of reasons, #1 being the '94 strike. He definitely has an interest in keeping a charismatic owner taking over the Cubs and making them even more popular in this city than they already are. Reinsdorf is pure evil. Zell doesn't own the Tribune or the Cubs.
  25. At least he's heating up. If Soriano starts hitting when he comes back, this lineup is deadly. Eh, he's done. Anyone who can't hit .300 on this team is a chump!
