  1. Are you referencing the Bonilla contract and using it as an example of why backloading contracts is a bad idea? Cause that's silly.
  2. They could always backload a Price contract with the TV deal looming in the future.
  3. I think they'll give him another week at least to see how he fares. One big game back from injury isn't enough to pull the trigger on that. Need to see him continue to hit decently enough. Only hitting .167 in the other three games he's had since he's been back.
  4. He's actually hitting against righties better than lefties this year, but yeah his career splits are pretty substantial. Might be worth having a bat like his on the bench, but we're already platooning two guys in LF and that's the only spot to put him unless they want to give Bryant and Rizzo a break here and there, and even then they can use Coghlan for that if they have to.
  5. You responded to the same thing twice in 7 minutes.
  6. it would have been really nice to see him take off a few hours ago
  7. His twitter handle is @ithrow88 He's well aware. [tweet] [/tweet]
  8. Normally I'd point to a criminally low BABIP with Utley, but his other peripherals all indicate he's probably actually this bad... http://i.imgur.com/4NtOKYt.png
  9. Gordon Wittenmyer ‏@GDubCub If Cubs still working on Carrasco, as reported, the package likely starts with Baez. Source said Indians asking for him in a deal with Cubs. Only posting that for Derwood's benefit in case he missed it.
  10. Would probably almost certainly include McKinney or Torres (who knows, maybe both). Possibly Hendricks now that his name has been tossed out there as a surprise option.
  11. 1) This notion that Gyorko's contract is some sort of financial cancer needs to stop. He makes $2 mil this year, less than Denorfia. He makes $4 mil next year, hardly a crippling debt to a team's payroll. If he can bounce back to just perform at league average production rates, he'll fulfill his end of his contract. 2) Trading Castro wouldn't mean the immediate call up of Baez who just returned from a somewhat serious injury. Gyorko let's them wait on Baez to get back in business before bringing him up.
  12. as long as javy can hit similar to wilmer flores he will be fine Wilmer Flores has a .660 OPS and nowhere near the power profile or pedigree of Javy Baez. If Javy hit like him I'd be very sad.
  13. Seconded. In the event the 3-team trade does happen, what exactly would something like that look like? Who would Boston give up in a deal? EDIT: Sounds like they're out, so nevermind
  14. Yes. They covered the $10 mil contract. Does not cover incentive bonuses though, which are kinda negligible. If he meets all of them he stands to make like $2 million. EDIT: So $3 mil total if he meets them all.

  16. Christ, 5/35MM and the ink's barely dry for a guy who could be playing in Japan in two years. With this in mind, Castro and Edwards for Ross, Kimbrel, Gyorko and his awful contract. Who says no? Are you kidding me? San Diego, a million times over.
  17. You don't have to be convinced, it just has to increase your chances. Not to mention the benefit a cost controlled starter will give in future years. With Ross or Carrasco the cubs can still go sign a top FA SP .. its totally worth it. If they get Ross or Carrasco it's very likely the Cubs will not bother with a top FA SP at all, spending hundreds of millions of dollars to bump Hammel or Hendricks out of the rotation would be silly. Wouldn't that conceivably make them useful bargaining chips for an offensive upgrade though? Or are we to assume by bumping them out of the rotation it lessens their trading value since the Cubs would need to move them vs. wanting to move them?
  18. Nothing will beat the moment when I was watching Baseball Tonight's trade deadline addition when Gammons said that Nomar didn't get traded and then about 2 minutes later it was reported Nomar was traded to the Cubs. Didn't something similar happen with Maddux?
  19. Wouldn't bead if he cost us Javy? I wouldn't be mad if Andrew Cashner cost us Javy. I'd jump up and down like a 12 year old girl who just scored Justin Bieber tickets if Carrasco cost us Javy. If they are dealing with the Indians I really want theo to do what it takes to get brantley. .300 avg CF locked up til 2018.. I'd give up soler and baez tbh. We need more High avg hitters anyways They won't move Brantley for anything short of Schwarber + more for the reasons you just stated.
  20. Phillips looks pretty good. The rest of the package isn't particularly inspiring though. my best approximation for what that might translate to for our system - McKinney - Alcantara / Olt? - Edwards Jr - something thoroughly worthless like Zastryzny i don't really like Fiers too much, but i'd still have been pretty happy with that deal (but i can also see a team scouting Phillips's tools much more favorably than McKinney's and preferring his upside) Domingo Santana has been kind of a beast. At 21 in 2014 he had a .296/.384/.474/.858 slash in AAA with 16 homers and 64 walks. That's pretty impressive. He's followed it up this year by having a .320/.426/.582/1.008 with 16 homers and 48 walks in 45 fewer games thus far. I'm guessing his defense is suspect, but his bat could be legit. Would not be surprised to see him in the Top 50 next season if he retains prospect status. He was #71 headed into this season and he's been even better than he was last year.
  21. His peripherals match his performance, and both are slightly down from peak Kimbrel. He still has a 2.75/2.49/2.46 ERA/FIP/xFIP He is also inexplicably suffering from his highest HR/FB this season. He's only given up 3 home runs, but it's good for 11.1%, highest in his career thus far. Also suffering from a .310 BABIP, which is the highest it's been since 2011 when it was .315. The previous 3 years it was .235, .263, and .250. I mentioned it in the Kennedy/Shields post I made in one of the other vague threads about their funky HR numbers despite peripherals being more or less similar to career norms, and Kimbrel is experiencing a similar situation, albeit to a lesser degree than the others.
