  1. For the reasons TT outlined, now would be a good time to trade Lee but you have to think there is better value at a position of need than Matt Garza. Kevin Slowey is available, but he's worse than Garza... but there were some rumblings that some teams also called on the Twins for Francisco Liriano and the word was they don't have a reason to move him (which is true), but I wonder if they are open to the idea. Anyone who has dealt with me in Fantasy Baseball knows I value Liriano more than any other player in baseball so I'm a bit biased, but if he could be had I'd try and see what it would take to pry him away
  2. Because they can afford it even after giving Adrian Gonzalez 160m? Technically speaking they haven't signed Gonzalez to anything, and is still costing them only $5 million this year. Obviously they're going to try and sign him, but yeah. Crawford is the only big contract they've given out so far this year Hmm. I was under the impression that the only thing missing from the 7/154m deal was the ink, and that it is simply waiting until a magical date in 2012 that keeps Boston from having to pay more in luxury tax. I was also under the impression that the principles involved in the trade going back to San Diego was dependent on Boston getting an extension. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/a-gon-no-extension-has-been-agreed-to.html Either way, there's probably a 95% minimum chance they'll ink him to that contract, but technically speaking he's not signed yet
  3. That's really gonna sink the Padres chances now.

  5. This reminds me of this short story from The Ten:
  6. It kind of depends on what "top prospects" means exactly, but I can't imagine giving up HJ Lee and Chirinos + pretty much anybody else as a good deal. If top prospects means JJax, Vitters, McNutt, etc., then it gets into the horrid trade range. Looking at xFIP, Garza hasn't been terribly impressive. He may outpitch his xFIP as he's done in Tampa, but he won't have the same level of defense playing behind him in Chicago that he's had in Tampa. Being any more than a 3-4 starter is unlikely, I'd think. I've gotten to the point where I'd gladly welcome him to the team for the right price, but I won't be losing any sleep over it if the deal doesn't go through. He's not an essential piece to the 2011 Chicago Cubs puzzle. Though I will say, if our offseason acquisitions were Garza, Webb, Pena, Davis, and O'Day I'd be pretty happy. Doubt all that happens though
  7. Only a matter of time now before he kicks the bucket. Fastest fastball ever? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5900594
  8. Kind of was hoping to keep Chirinos to use in the deal with Texas to get O'Day and Davis. Maybe one of them would accept one of our other catching prospects instead? This has the potential to be a really, really bad trade. Yeah, I'm not liking the implied amount of players we're giving up. Great, Garza is under control for 3 more years. 3 more multimillion dollar years. Chirinos and Lee, IMO, should be plenty to get the deal done, though I hope they rework it to keep Lee... I really like the idea of having Lee and Castro up the middle in the future. They'd probably be a lot of fun to watch
  9. Career highs/lows in all the major batted ball metrics
  10. Darren O'Day, a really good reliever for Texas who has been rumored to be coming over in a possible Cubs/Rangers swap involving Chris Davis
  11. This. I'm not advocating a trade for him if it takes all our best prospects and players. I'm not too concerned with the anxiety. It would be a slight concern, but he appears to have it in check. His asking price is way too much for the Cubs to partake in so I wouldn't dream of trying to pull the trigger on a deal. We've got some great young arms coming up through the system that I'd be much more inclined to keep instead of deal away for Greinke.
  12. Huh? BR has him at 2.4 WAR in 2010, and an ERA+ of 100. I'm using FanGraphs. Greinke's FIP was 83 points lower than his ERa and his xFIP was 41 points lower. He was much better than his numbers indicated last year
  13. A lot of reports indicated that towards the end of the year Greinke just sort of went out there and went through the motions because he pretty much knew he would get no run support, and he still put up a WAR of 5.2. His good year isn't a fluke. He's always had ace quality stuff, he just had some mental issues before putting them in check. You put him on a contender and I bet he performs closer to how he did in 09. Hell, you put him on a contender in 2010 and his numbers would probably look way better than what they were. He needs to get out of Kansas City
  14. So basically all our valuable prospects/young players
  15. If Brandon Webb never got hurt and continued pitching at the level he was at prior to the injuries, he'd be making whatever Cliff Lee's contract is going to be look like a bargain. If we can get him for $7 million it would be a big risk, but it would also be a monumental pay off if he returns to form EDIT: fwiw, Webb's WAR before the injuries... 2008: 6.0 2007: 6.9 2006: 7.0 2005: 5.3 2004: 3.1 2003: 4.8 Using FanGraph's Salary/Dollars stat, just for fun, he has made a total of $13.6 million while providing a performance valued at $121.5 million. I'd be more inclined to take a risk on someone like him
  16. Also, for the annual offseason "What's Mark Prior up to these days?" update...
  17. How does Jeff Francoeur continue to gain employment on a major league roster? Hasn't his defense taken a rather large hit? Combine that with his terrible offense, should he be given any deals worth over a million dollars?
  18. There's a $16 million club option on Ramirez (which I hope we won't take), a $14 million player option for Dempster (which he probably will take), $12 million mutual option for Silva (which we probably won't take). That's it. Otherwise, it's $4 million total to buy out Ramirez and Silva Here's the spreadsheet from Cot's: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tt7HjIernphaSrv4wMWdUYg&output=html He meant on Pena. Oh, thought he meant in general on the Cubs current contracts
  19. Assuming Ramirez and Silva are bought out and Dempster takes his option, the Cubs will have a crap load of money to spend on an otherwise weak FA class
