  1. Does anyone feel like this FO is going to be in the business of handing out albatross contracts, though, given their past failures in Boston and what they've said since coming here?
  2. Because if you don't overspend on a free agent you don't need to worry about eating 90% or more of their ridiculous salary just to get rid of them when they've run their course?
  3. They were reported to be willing to eat 90%+ of it around the trade deadline, were they not? Eating salary to get a better return shouldn't be an issue for this team, and they've said as much in the past. He's coming off of one of his best seasons both offensively and defensively. If the Cubs are willing to eat more than 90% it should be easy to move him, provided he's willing to waive his NTC to go wherever they try and send him to.
  4. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/cubs-to-shop-alfonso-soriano.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook
  5. If what i read is true, the Braves acquiring Upton is all based around giving up Andrelton Simmons. Apparently he's the piece that absolutely must be included. If the Braves were to wind up trading Simmons (which they've pretty much said he's untouchable at this point so I doubt it), I would hope the Cubs try and swoop in and send them Barney for another one of their pitchers.
  6. Hey guys, everyone's favorite closer, Brian Wilson, was non-tendered and is now a free agent! Also, just rounding out other notables so far: Geovany Soto Brandon Snyder Jake Brigham (heh) Two-Pitch Rich John Lannan Tom Gorzelanny Jesus Flores
  7. I'd rather have Reynolds at 3B than Valbuena. He's still serviceable with the bat and on the right side of 30. As a stop gap he's probably the best option available now.
  8. We just claimed him off waivers from Colorado at the beginning of November
  9. Cubs non-tendered Jaye Chapman, Zach Putnam, and Ian Stewart
  10. I was pretty meh on it myself and then looked up on BA that Bourn had a 4.7 WAR season in 2009, a 5.3 in 2010 and a 6.0(!) last year (put up 3.0 in 2011) (Fangraphs has him at 4.9, 4.7, 4.1 and 6.4). I was not expecting that at all. Yeah, Bourn has silently been one of the more valuable center fielders in the game. Exceptional defense, solid hitting ability, exceptional base runner, and a knack for drawing a decent amount of walks. But he's 30, and will command an ass load of money and his legs could break down sooner rather than later and that would effectively kill most of the things that make him valuable
  11. I think the Cubs should be looking at any/every low risk-high reward bullpen candidate at this point.
  12. Shoulder issues. He had shoulder tendinitis and it kept him out all of last season before rehabbing in the minors toward the end at Single-A
  13. Rafael Perez got NT'd as well. Looks like he was on the DL all yea with a left latissiumus dorsi muscle strain. Not sure how serious that is, but he's been a solid reliever for the Indians for all but one of his seasons, and been pretty good the last two. If that injury is one that is able to be recovered from well, then we could use a solid bullpen guy
  14. Reportedly 7-years $122 million, which combined with his team option, gives him 8-years $138 million from here on out. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/11/mets-extend-david-wright.html
  15. And know all the right people
  16. I absolutely think that Barney could be had for someone like Brett Anderson. We may need to include an expendable mid-tier prospect with him, but it's definitely possible. Barney is under control for 4 more years, costs league minimum this coming season, and is one of the best defensive infielders in the game. Anderson pitched for a few weeks coming off TJS this season, is owed a guaranteed $7+ mil over the next two seasons (if he's bought out), or if you pick up his options, is owed $13.5 the next two or $25.5 the next three. Oakland would be ridding themselves of a guy they probably would only keep for one more year since he'd get expensive for them, for a guy they could keep for 4 at low cost? And at a position they need while dealing form a position of depth? To the A's, Barney should be waaaaay more valuable than Peacock
  17. Are you only focusing on his 2011 and ignoring the rest of his awful career? He's not overvaluing Barney, you're overvaluing Peacock
  18. Jordan Walden is now being shopped around after the signing of Ryan Madson.
  19. Blergh, posted that in the mock offseason thread, totally spaced on there being an actual thread already
  20. http://www.bleachernation.com/2012/11/28/report-japanese-reliever-kyuji-fujikawa-prefers-cubs-or-angels/
  21. Yeah, think about all the utterly elite assets they sent out in those trades... The package they got for Miguel Cabrera was kind of a joke
  22. The dream of a future outfield of Stanton, Soler, and Almora? Swoon.
  23. Rob Deer is too sexy for his batting average http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5082/5322387909_f07140bdfe.jpg
