  1. Fun Bryant number... 50.5% (51% if you want to round up) of Kris Bryant's 93 hits in 2014 have been for extra bases.
  2. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/24597054/theyre-in-on-samarrdzija-hammel-but-dont-the-mariners-need-bats Jon Heyman, so... take it fwiw Also, Jack Z saying "We're not doing anything foolish" is rich
  3. Mat Latos plunked Kris Bryant because he hit a home run off of him in his first AB this season while Latos was rehabbing. Just throwing that out there so we hate him with an extra amount of fury
  4. Hard to categorize that one since it has less to do with Bonilla's return and more to do with Wilpon being foolish and falling victim to Madoff's ponzi scheme. That and the Mets didn't give him the original contract, Florida did. The Mets just took the last year they owed him and got stupid with it. That's the Mets fault. And yes, Steve Phillips was apart of that mess.
  5. Well, you don't draft a guy like Marco Gonzalez and worry about arbitration/super 2 considerations. Doesn't change my wistfulness :(
  6. +135 run differential right now. Second best is SF at +49. Two weeks ago I posted the same thing in the Musings thread, except Oakland's differential was at +128 and San Fran was at +65. Oakland is ridiculous this season.
  7. Yeah I know, just using it as an example, but it seems like a trade comparable to that would be more what the Cubs would prefer since it's more difficult these days to trade MLB talent for MLB talent (or very near MLB talent, anyways)
  8. My first thought when reading this was a [shutter] three team trade [/shutter] where the Cubs can flip Samardzija for prospects that go to a third team in exchange for MLB talent back to the Cubs. Seattle gets Samardzija Florida gets Walker, Paxton, Baez Cubs get Stanton But we all know that will never happen, but that's what I thought when I read that.
  9. I'm always a little wistful when I see other teams promote their prospects quickly without regard for the financial ramifications
  10. His walk rate is similar to last year overall. He's whiffing more, but also has 2.5x the home runs as last year in 3/4 the PA's. He hasn't really progressed as a hitter, but I wouldn't say he's regressed, either. Lower SLG and substantially fewer doubles to go with that uptick in HR. Is the Eastern League a better hitters league than Carolina League (where he spent most of his time last season)? His slugging is .391 instead of .395. First off, that's hardly a dropoff to pick on. Secondly, it is entirely due to a drop in batting average - the ISO is up ever so slightly. The doubles are off - partly due to some of them being triples this year. But doubles can vary significantly from year to year, so I don't think that dropoff is particularly alarming. Fair enough.
  11. lol So Lindor, I assume, is playing elite defense still except he's regressed offensively from last season, and this makes him... better? His walk rate is similar to last year overall. 13. Given that those who were ahead of him this year are either injured, struggling, or graduating to the majors (or likely going to be graduating to the majors), I think you do have to make a legit case for him to be #1.
  14. Padres fired Josh Byrnes. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11120049/san-diego-padres-fire-general-manager-josh-byrnes It's a shame they can't find a competent GM like Hoyer. http://i.imgur.com/fNTb0HC.gif
  15. Yeah, it's gonna get bumpy riding that one out. Still, it might be trumped in the worst value category by Verlander's before all is said and done. Vernon Wells will forever be the worst. Actually, no... B.J. Upton is well on his way to being the worst value ever Mike Hampton? That ended up being ugly. Yeeeaaaaahhhh, I forgot he existed. Hampton: 8 years, $121 million, 2.9 rWAR Wells: 7 years, $126 million, 8.1 rWAR Upton is going to make a case though. 5 years, $75.25 million, -1.4 rWAR (so far)

  17. I believe he prefers The Rickster or Rickalicious.
  18. I agree. If he can hack it enough to be considered merely average as a defensive backstop, but has the hitting prowess of Joey Votto (who he models his approach after) then by all means they should see if he can stick. but given what the Cubs are already doing with him I can't imagine he'd be a strong option at catcher defensively. Still, I agree it would be nice if he can stick there, I just don't think it will happen. Hope I'm proven wrong, though.
  19. Maybe the plan is to do that and then have him work on some things with technique catching-wise in the offseason. Personally, I'd just throw him in LF and let him rake his way up. Why dont we want a catcher who can rake? Isn't that much more valuable? Yes, but catchers take much longer to develop compared to other positions. Holding him down in the minors for an extra year or two so that he might be able to catch is hardly worth it. Especially when the consensus is he probably won't be able to stick there anyways. If Schwarber is going to be a below average defender no matter where he plays, I'd rather he be a below average LF'er than a below average catcher. But there's a chance he'll be fine at a corner spot, while he likely wouldn't be fine behind the plate

  21. Ewwwww. He should work with Rizzo in the offseason
