  1. 1-1 in Brussels after too many squandered chances. Seeding should be in the bag though.
  2. 1-0 to Belgium and the party has started. Time to bring in 17yr old Bakkali :D
  3. I guarantee you there will be behind the scenes shenanigans at FIFA before 12/06 to get "appropriate" countries seeded
  4. :yahoo: Bold prediction of the day: there will be a spike in the national beer consumption tonight. :D That was a very impressive display.
  5. All eyes on Zagreb tonight.
  6. Me? Neither - there's a third match that interests me
  7. ... and since you are paying attention: last wednesday, Yoeri Tielemans became the youngest Belgian ever to start a CL game at 16yrs 4months and 25 days old. Vincent Kompany is the most frequent reference used to describe his style of play.
  8. He is yet to commit - he's been called up a couple of times for Belgium's youth squads, but is also eligible to choose to play for Albania (where his parents are from). I hope he follows the example set by Fellaini and - just this month - Bakkali (PSV) and opts to play for Belgium.
  9. Had to go look her up. Us dumb americans aren't real familiar with cyclers. http://velonews.competitor.com/2013/10/news/dombroski-killed-in-training-crash_304886 It's a cultural thing - cyclo cross is one of the two main sports here during winter (soccer is the other one). It's on the front page of all the news sites over here - judging by the shocked reactions of the top riders, she was well-liked.
  10. RIP Amy Dombroski. To die like that such a long way from home...
  11. It's pretty easy to see why Girardi may look at us as a better situation than that mess. Girardi is smart enough to want to get out of NY, but that doesn't guarantee he's coming to Chicago.
  12. José Mourinho probably did the same yesterday.
  13. Good as this team may be, Belgium's ranking is too high. I'd put them in the 10-15 range myself. So I agree with you - I'd be very surprised if Belgium got a #1 seed. Obviously, as soon as those rankings came out, the topic of WC seeding was discussed in the local media, with their focus on how late the seeding would be decided. I'm guessing there will be a lot of behind the scenes discussions at FIFA if those rankings hold.
  14. Confirmed as a last minute deadline move. Risky move for him, imho. Lukaku from Chelsea to Everton on loan - this one I like a lot more.
  15. Gooch is no longer a Sporting Lisbon player.
  16. Even if they didn't sell Dempsey, they still would have had to make 3-4 moves to challenge for a UCL spot. They signed Paulinho from Corinthians and they signed Roberto Soldado (25, 27, 30 goals last 3 year) from Valencia. I'd still like to see them get another striker .... They also signed Nacer Chadli from Twente.
  17. Not sure about the easier shot at minutes bit, but the rest is spot on. I'm quite sure the Iceland squad is easier to make than the USMNT, but playing for Iceland you're probably limited to group stage matches for Euro and WC qualifying (with perhaps an outside shot at the occasional Euro tournament). It's much harder to break in to the US squad, but when you can, you are almost sure to make it to the WC (exposure included), thus enhancing your chances to play for (or at least get a contract from) a big club earlier in your career.
  18. FYI Sacha Kljestan left the first league match of the new season injured midway through the first half, but nothing serious (needed stitches in his ear). Anderlecht finished the game with an all-teenage midfield of Bruno (19), Praet (19), Tielemans(16) and Acheampong (19). Their coach thinks they need some incoming transfers. #-o
  19. You have to rule wrong. A player is offside at the moment the ball is played towards him (or her 8-))
  20. I believe the logic that is being used is based on the national membership of the governing international body. In this particular case, Great Britain is a member of the International Tennis Federation (and England isn't). And as I assume you point of reference for individual sports may be golf: traditionally, England and Scotland have been members of the International Golf Federation, so that's what was used to identify players. However, British Golf became an affiliate member in 2010, so who knows how that will evolve.
  21. Well at least I got to see Raley warm up in that 14 inning game last week :D He looked really nervous to me.
  22. What do they mean by "developing"? We give our maintenance guys headgear that looks like a baseball cap but protects them from hurting their head bumping it. The thing is even called "First Base" 8-) http://www.wiltec.nl/media/o/4/b/first-base-3-classic.jpg
  23. To end my baseball trip to the US last week, I went to the Indianapolis Indians@ Durham Bulls game on Sunday, and was surprised to find six ex-Cubs system guys on the rosters. Hak-Ju Lee was the only one that didn't play (for obvious reasons) but Guyer, Fontenot and Beliveau (for the Bulls), and Pie and Harrison (for the Indians) did. Of those five, Pie was easily the worst of the bunch, and seemed to be acting like a dick at some point (insisting on wanting some stuff from the dugout in the middle of an at-bat). I know it was father's day, but I have never in my life seen so many small kids at any sports event - it was just great.
  24. Rafael Benitez will coach Napoli next season.
  25. Too bad, I would have enjoyed an extra half hour of this. :-)
