The only positive is if Holliday and DeRosa leave St Lou in the off season and Tonys left with another pumpkin in 2010 and the Cubs can be the big fish in a small pond again. The other positive is that theres only a month and a half left in it.

While I agree with the giving up the season part, why not pull Gregg from the role an see if Marmol or Guz are capable? If they look like they can handle it, maybe they can keep the job next year. If not, we'll need to get one in the ofseason, as I really dont see Gregg back next year.

Maybe Fuld, Hill, or hell even Caridad can learn SS on the fly. Anythings better than Miles.

They certainly improved their lineup by acquiring Holliday, but both he and Lugo have played well over their heads since going to St. Louis. Holliday OPS in Oakland this year: .831 Holliday OPS in St. Louis this year: 1.266 Lugo OPS in Boston this year: .719 Lugo OPS in St. Louis this year: .987 If those two come back to earth, that's a decent lineup but not a gauntlet. Other than Pujols you have Rasmus with a .742 OPS, DeRosa with a .792 OPS, Ludwick with an .800 OPS and Molina with a .747 OPS. The Cardinals are likely to have a lineup with four players over an .800 OPS the rest of the way (Pujols, DeRosa, Ludwick, Holliday). Ill give you Lugo, but I think Holidays legit. It could be said that Hollidays decline this year was due to leaving Coors, but kepp in ind, that A's lineup is pretty much garbage, and he had no protection, and now that hes sandwiched between Pujols and Ludwick, hes being pitched to differently. I doubt he keeps up the 1.300 OPS, but somewhere in the mid-hi 9s wouldnt surprise me. Hopefully he flyd the coop next year and the Cards go back to their mediocrity. Can they even afford both him and Pujols, who will be a FA in 2011?

Did you miss '06? You're right, what am I talking about, Franklin will probably set some kind of a post season save record along with Lohse and Pineiro throwing a combined 18 or so shutout innings. Eh they are good now. But, the crushing every all star reliever thing is getting a bit old. When the heart of their lineup consisted of Pujols, Ludwick, Molina/Ankiel, they were getting lucky, but now theyve turned in their pixie dust for good player. DeRosa-Pujols-Holliday-Ludwick-Rasmus-Molina-Lugo is a pretty tough gauntlet to go through. If Glause comes back, thats a damn good bat off the bench. I agree about their pitching aside from Carpenter and Wainwright, but how good is the Phillies pitching once you get around Lee and Hammels, whose not doing too well himself? Are Pedro, Myers, Blanton that much to write home about? What about their pen? Chan Ho Park has had a spectacular re birth as a reliever so far, and Eyre doing pretty good for himself but Lidge has fallen apart completely. How about the Dodgers? Billingsly-Kershaw are a nice 1-2, but behind them, you have Wolf, Kuroda, and Schmidt, again, nothing to worry about. Id take our rotation over either of those any day. Broxton a great closer, and Troncoso or whatever has become their Marmol, but I couldnt name another member of their pen. In the playoffs, that solid 1-2 is all you really need. Im not saying the Cardinals will cruise through the playoffs, but once they'ren there, they have as good a chance as the Phillies and Dodgers.

Yeah, but Lillys a fly ball pitcher in a very home run unfriendly park with 1 player on their team capable of doing damage. Dont pitch to Adrian and sweep these losers. Last I checked, Brian Giles whose well washed up but still gets us is still on the DL, so that sounds like a plan.

Between Marshall, Gorzalanny, and Samardzjia, from a corporate point of view, you have a 5th starter and theres no need to pay for anything else. Id love for Hendry to make a move for Halladay however, but if Harden excepts arbitration, thats probably not going to happen. We can all dream of a rotation consisting of Halladay, Z, Harden, Lilly, and Demp, but its not realistic. A rotation of Z, Lilly, Demp, Wells, Gorz may not look particularly impressive, but it looks very solid. I guess it also depends on what Ricketts plans on doing as far as the payroll is concerned next year and what other needs they feel they want to fill.

no. the payroll for next year is about $120M and they've already sunk a lot of money into long-term contracts with Z and dempster (plus lilly is still under contract in 2010). offer him arbitration and probably watch him walk. Harden has ace stuff when hes on. It would be hard to just let him walk. Then again, hes one of those guys you dont want to give a big contract to because you never know how long he could be on the DL. If we could land Halladay, that would be great, but a rotation of Z, Lilly, Dempster, Wells and Gorz looks decent on paper, but you never know what to expect.

One of those games where it seems like a sure win for us, so you know, we'll see what happens.
