  1. They need upgraded offense from at least one of (probably more) LF, 2B and/or C next year also. I really don't believe they are a closer away from contending for a WS. Thats not going to happen though. They cant do anything with Soriano. They're going to have to give Soto another year to see if this was just a sophmore slump, and hopefully, he'll play winter ball. As for 2B, I dont know whats really available, so we may as well stick with Baker and Fontenot. The only moves I anticipate are a closer and maybe re signing Harden.
  2. Thats was my thinking. No matter what Lee does, he'll be 35 at that point, and I knwo that if Jim Hendry is still around, he'll be tempted to give him a 5 year 120 million dollar deal, but it will be time for a change.
  3. I did too, then I woke up at like 12:30 and took a look at the final score on my phone. I wasnt the least bit surprised.
  4. Theres no excuse for the Cobs to lose this one. Unfortunately, the Cobs never need an excuse to lose.
  5. Just out of curoiosity, why the hell did Lou mess with the lineup? We seemes to be at our best when the lineup was Fuku Theriot Lee Ramirez Bradley Soriano Font/Baker Hill/Soto but then he decides to tinker with it, and all of the sudden, we suck again.
  6. Throughout these dismal 3 weeks or so that have essentially sunk this team, there have been 2 bright spots, being Derrek Lee and Jeff Baker. The question is, can Baker keep it up? Were his 2008 numbers indicitive of what he'll be? Will he be like Mike Fontenot, and thrive as a backup but ultimately prove that he has no business as a full time starter, or maybe like Mark DeRosa, and thirive when hes finally given the opportunity as a full time starter? If he keeps up what hes doing now, or anywhere near, theres really no point in signing a replacement in the offseason who may or may not be an upgrade. Another upside to him is that with Andres Blanco as a backup SS, theres absolutley no reason to keep Aaron Miles on the team. What is his 2010 status? Is he under team control, arb eligible or what?
  7. I wasnt sure if this belonged here or the minor league forum. Still, the September call ups arent that far away, so who will get the call? The definites are Justin Berg Jeff Stevens Micah Hoffpauir Andres Blanco probably Bobby Scales -Is John Gaub an option? AAA hitters havnt stood a chance against Gaub, and Id love to see what he can do up here. -Jeff Samrdzjias another possibility, but its probably in everyones best interest if he were to stay in Iowa as a starter. -Brad Snyder? I know hes not on the 40 man, but we all know that Lou loves lefties, so we can make room. -Mitch Atkins? So Taguchi? Chris Robinson? A long awaited cup of coffee for John Ford Griffin? anyone else? The way I see it theres 2 40 man spots left, and if they need more, theres really no need to keep Neal Cotts and Chad Fox on it.
  8. I would very much like to bump Colvin to Iowa just to see what hes capable of. If Im not mistaken, he'll be rule 5 eligible this off season, and its time to poop or get off the pot with him. Hes done well for himself at AA and we should bump him to the next level.
  9. Maybe if the Cubs could play all the remainder of their games at home, but unfortunately., they're completely inept on the road no matter who they're playing.
  10. The circus of ineptitude continues. Considering this team isnt capable of scoring more than 1 run in this God forsaken park, theres really no reason for me to stay up any longer.
  11. Rockies and Fish took the lead and Giants tied it up... Brewers just lost to the Pirates again, so if nothing else, theres probably nobody standing in our way for 2nd place in the division.
  12. Problem with Shark is hes on the 40 man, so wed have to put him through waivers, and someone would probably claim him.
  13. This thread got my hopes up again and I hate you for that. Yeah, not mine. I think I'm finally cured of such optimism. There is a very fine line between optimism and stupidity. It's just plain stupid to think the Cubs can finish 33-13 when they've shown us no reason whatsoever to think they can be that good. Yeah, we can win it. Just look at the epic meltdowns of the 2007 and 2008 Mets. The problem is, its no longer completely in our hands, its in the hands of the Cardinals, who are now a legitiamately good team. That lineup is as good as anything in the NL including the Phillies.
  14. I still think Stevens should be up here somewhere unless they just want him to get more innings in at Iowa. For next year: Closer-FA set up-Marmol 7th inning-Guz Pen-Grabow Loogy-Gaub pen-Stevens pen-Parker/Berg/whoever See what we can get in trade for Marshall. Its clear that he'll never be a starter on this team, and hes too good to be used the way he has been out of the pen.
  15. Offer him a one year deal with a team option for a second year and use him as a setup man. If he walks away from that, oh well. Problem is, even if we do that, Id rather Marmol/Guzman as setup and go out and get a closer. That should be our main focus this offseason. He wont walk, because hes not dumb enough to think that any team will give up 2 draft picks for him.
  16. I think we'll win this one, but I guess I'll find out tomorrow morning. and NO AARON MILES!!! I dont care what they do with him, bring up Blanco.
  17. Hopefully this past offseason ahs taught Hendry that when you already have a great product, you dont need to make a splash in the offseason, rather go out and fill holes. I say give Baker the full time 2B job the rest of this year. If he does well, give it to him next year. If not, we'll need a 2B or SS. If we could get someone like Valverde or Rafael Soriano as a closer, that would be great as well as long as were not over paying. Also, re sign Harden for a year or 2 years with incentives, unless of course Halladay is attainable. Even if the 2010 opening day lineup looks like 1. Fukudome CF 2. Theriot SS 3. Ramirez 3B 4. Lee 1B 5. Bradley RF 6. Soriano LF 7. In shape Soto C 8. Baker 2B SP Z SP Lilly SP Dempster SP Wells SP Gorzalanny BP Marmol BP Guzman BP Grabow BP Stevens BP Gaub BP Mashall BP FA Closer Bench Koyie Hill/Chris Robinson/Clevenger Bench Fox Bench Fuld Bench Fontenot Bench Blanco Its still a good looking team if they remain healthy.
  18. The problem with waiving Gregg and losing him now is that we can offer him arbitration after the year and, perhaps, get a pick or two for him. Even if he ends up as a Type B, we'd get a sandwich pick for him. That's better than putting him on waivers. And what if he accepts the arb and were stuck with him again?
  19. While I agree with the giving up the season part, why not pull Gregg from the role an see if Marmol or Guz are capable? If they look like they can handle it, maybe they can keep the job next year. If not, we'll need to get one in the ofseason, as I really dont see Gregg back next year. Not that Gregg should stay in the role, but seeing if a reliever can "do the job" right now is very easily not indicative of whether or not they'll be able to do it again the next season. Its worth a shot though. The only FA closer Id really want next year would be Valverde, and he'll probably want close to K Rod money and thats not something that Cubs can or should offer this offseason. As for Gregg, Im not kidding when I say just put him through waivers. If hes not the closer, theres really no point on him being on the team, and Id just assume go Grabow/Marshall-Marmol-Guzman as the end game, and have someone like Berg, Gaub, or Stevens who could actually be a part of the teams future take Greggs pen spot.
  20. Right now, this is clearly the Cardinals division to win or lose. Yeah, we can still take it, but it wont be easy. Right now, they're on a very hot streak, and were on an awful streak aside from that little league team we bullied this past weekend. Either way, Ive waited this long, whats another year? If nothing else, hopefully the GM can fill some holes in the offseason without doing anything stupid.
  21. Cant disagree with the Aaron Miles thing Ryan Brauns about as irrelevant as the rest of his team at this point. Next years another year. If we dont go through all the injuries weve dealt with this team can be the favs for the division once again.
  22. that's different from the first part of '09 why? Sorry. Didn't mean to imply the minors are worthy of attention only towards the end of the season... It's just that for many of us, there wasn't much to be excited about in the system until some of the kids showed significant promise this year. It has been awhile since weve had this many age appropriate prospects to be excited about.
  23. While the trucks being backed up, can we load Aaron Miles and Kevin Gregg on it and send it somewhere on the far southern hemisphere?
  24. Vitters went 5-7 in the double header, so thats encouraging. Has that avg. up to a whopping .241
  25. It seems as though Gregg always chokes after he gets that 2nd out. Too bad they cant just give him the 9th inning for the 1st 2 outs and then put someone else in.
