  1. Its quite unfortunate that The Pirates got stuck with the Phillies at the same time as the Brewers and Cards got the Astros and Cubs. This 1 weekend could very well spell the Pirates doom.
  2. As do I. And the team will win more with Pena than with LaHair, if it comes down to that choice. I think we both agree that it shouldn't come down to that choice, though. That we can very much agree on. However Im not denying that we'll win more with Pena than with LaHair, Im just saying that it wouldnt make enough of a difference to sign Pena for 2-3 years. If it came down to it, Id rather go woth someone from the system, LaHair was just an example, and wait for something better to come along.
  3. The Giants acquired Orlando Cabrera from the Indians for minor league OF Thomas Neal, who was BPs pre-2010 96th overall prospect. I never quite understand why teams keep wanting Orlando Cabrera unless theyre confusing him with Miguel Cabrera or Asdrubal Cabrera.
  4. Big market teams don't go with LaHair over Pena. Assuming we don't sign Fielder or Pujols in the offseason, you're right that a lot of fans won't turn out either way. However, more will come out to see a team that has Pena over one with LaHair. I dont think that Penas signing another 1 year deal, and he's really not worth signing for anymore. What it comes down to is if nobodies offering anything of any value for him, hes not hurting us by being around, and maybe someone will bite come August. If he's still around in September, Ill be somewhat disappointed. If he's still around come April. Ill be very unhappy. I don't want Pena, I don't want LaHair. I want to see this team win.
  5. So they won't turn out to see a better version of this team, but they will turn out to see a team that fields AAAA players? If the Cubs bring Pena back and sign Wilson they probably won't contend but they'll come a lot closer than if they start LaHair at first. The minute possibility that Pena produces another 6 win season is enough to go with him over LaHair. I never said they turn out to see a AAAA team. I dont think they'll turn out to see either. They just need to spend the necessary money so t doesnt come down to that. Were a major market team. They need to go back to acting like it but be smarter this time.
  6. I wonder how good the Dodgers could have been had they spend their money more wisely than Rafael Furcal, Jason Schmidt, Andruw Jones, and Juan Pierre. If seems that the main difference between the Cubs and Dodgers is that we didnt produce guys like Kemp, Kershaw, and Billingsy or aquire a young Andre Ethier.
  7. I wouldn't support going with LaHair either. With Pena there might be a 10% chance to contend (I'm making up numbers here, don't get too hung up on them). It's not a good chance, but there is a chance. With LaHair, who may well put up a 0 WAR or worse, that small chance drops further. Plus, if it's blatantly obvious the Cubs aren't trying to contend, they'll lose even more fans and the ballpark will get even more thin. The fans aren't dumb. If they send out a team that looks like this one, they're not going to react well. CJ Wilson would be a good pickup, but I don't think he'd be enough of a difference maker alone. If Pena is back, without a substantial upgrade elsewhere, and I don't know where else they'd have one, I cant imagine contending. I don't see another 100 loss disaster, but another 4th-5th place team. I think the only difference between Pena and LaHair would be a close 4th-5th place with a chance for 3rd if Pujols leaves the Cards vs. a distant 5th place with a chance for 4th if Pujols leaves the Cards.
  8. Got to love the fact that to this day people harp on the fact that The Cubs let go of Brock for nothing, but dont mention the fact that about 15 years later they acquired the best 2B of a generation as a throw in.
  9. Fielder has been worth 3.4 WAR so far this year, Pena's been worth 1.0. I'm concerned that Pena's value will deteriorate heading into his age 35 season, while Fielder may well get better entering his age 28 season. We could contend with Pena instead of Fielder, but it'd be more based on getting lucky with regression not kicking in. In order to contend next year we need as many wins as we can get from our offseason additions, so 3-4+ extra wins from Fielder/Pujols would be pretty important. If we were to contend with Pena, wed need a lot of things to go right. -CJ Wilson -Zambrano and Soriano to get back to old form -Castros power to develop -'08/'10 Soto -Brett Jackson to be the real deal -Aramis to return Thats a lot of ifs. If we dont get Fielder or Pujols, I really dont see it happening. Pena would be a waste of money. If they dont plan on Fielder or Pujols, they may as well go with LaHair.
  10. And Ubaldo leaves The Rockies with 1 inning 4 ER performance vs. The Padres.
  11. Harden has made like 4 starts and he got them Lars Anderson? I know he's blocked and his stock has fallen a bit, but damn. Nice buy low trade, Oakland. Well done. They'll probably be lucky to get another 4 starts out of him. Dont know who Lars Anderson is, but if hes only 23 with a .809 career minor league OPS, and the A's going nowhere, this sounds like a clear win for them. They'll still be bad though.
  12. Yeah probably until this offseason or next years trade deadline please, do explain Im assuming that hes suggesting that The Indians will trade him to the Yankees somewhere in the next 12 months. Its really not that far fetched. Despite the fact that theyre in 2nd place, there still the 4th best team in an awful division, although they probably have a brighter future than the TIgers and White Sox.
  13. Brett Jackson with another HR and a BB today. Marwin Gonzalez homered as well. Carlton Smith pitched a perfect inning in his I Cubs debut. Matt Szczur pinch ran in Daytona, so thats probably a good sign.
  14. Wheres your faith man? Were only 16.5 games out in a weak division. We're right where we want to be.
  15. let's make a bet - i say carlos pena will not be the cubs' starting 1b through 2015. you say he will be. loser has to stop posting on nsbb. Thats a lose lose for me.If I lose I cant post anymore. If I win I lose my spellchecker and daily dose of dry wit. How about if Im right you send me a case of Vegemite.
  16. yes it is. so was yesterday. tomorrow will be to.
  17. If you are sitting by your computer wanting to see what moves the Cubs make, I suggest finding something else to do. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Ladies and gentleman, your 2011-2015 Chicago Cubs 1B, Carlos Pena. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Theres a massive difference between not wanting to blow up the team and being an awful GM. My only hope is that this is some desperate last attempt for leverage.
  18. I don't know. If Philly is cleaning out their farm system to win it all this year, I wonder what kind of prospect we could get for Wood. Then just sign him again for next year. Exactly. Why are people happy about this? Agreed. Wood is a great reliever at the price, but I cant understand why he wouldn't want to go somewhere for a chance to win. Christ, its 2 months, probably closer to 3 for the Phillies, so he doesn't exactly have to uproot his family.
  19. Looks like the Indians are about to acquire Ludwick as well, despite the fact that hes been horrible for a year and a half now. Im sure PetCo had something to do with that, though I dont know much about the Indians park.
  20. This team is just too awesome for words to possible describe.
  21. This organization's "plan" seems to be to assemble a patchwork roster each season with false optimism that they will compete for a title. Now that this year is shot, they shift their plan to a futile attempt to win next year. They are never willing to sacrifice the present for a better chance of winning in the future. Now I am all for the win now philosophy if it is a realistic goal, but this Cubs team just doesn't have the core to do that. Even if they were to go out and sign Pujols or Fielder, there are still too many holes. This half-assed rebuilding (and hoping to win at the same time) mode isn't getting us anywhere. Really? So you don't think that adding a big time middle of the order bat and front of the rotation pitcher would make this team a winner? Then you totally wasting your time even following this team, because add those pieces, and they should own the division.
  22. I understand Byrd, but Pena needs to go for whatever we can get, even if it's no better than the Kosuke package.
  23. brewers aquired Jerry Hairston Jr. for a minor leaguer.
  24. Seattle also get 3B Fracisco Martinez, a Tigers top 10 prospect.
