  1. Both Szczur and Baez out of their lineups. Makes me a bit nervous, but if there were any big injuries,we'd have heard about them by now. Right?
  2. If we want to go to the woulda-coulda draft stuff, one thing I was unaware of is that in 2002, with our 2nd round, 56th overall pick, we selected 1B Brian Dopirek. With the 57th pick, in that same draft, the Boston Red Sox selected LHP John Lester. I know how much of a crapshoot the draft is, but it still makes one want to bang ones head.
  3. It's going to take YEARS for those teams to turn it around. We don't have anywhere near the kind of awesomeness that those 2 teams produced from their farm systems.
  4. If Chaz Bono didn't have that little operation, she'd still be Chasity Bono. And it would have been more embarrasing to have wet the bed vs. The Astro than the Dodgers, not that that wasn't embarrasing enough.
  5. The only position players in Iowa who I think really have a future are Jackson, Flaherty, and LeMahieu. Castillo too, but he's on the DL. Maybe Marwin Gonzalez. Jackson is the only one who I think could get sufficient PT while the others sit on the bench. LaHair plays 1B and a touch of corner OF, so he's not really taking a spot away from any of those guys and he'll likely be nothing more than a bat off the bench, and next year, he'll probably be either on someones AAA team or in Japan and you won't have to worry about him anymore.
  6. The reason is that the people who make decisions for the Chicago Cubs decided he should sit. That's not exactly an ironclad justification. The reason he's sitting is because Aramis Ramirez is our best hitter and the organization seems to be in love with Darwin Barney, whether he's actually a better player than DeWitt, or even Baker or not.
  7. Havnt seen this posted anywhere else, but Matt Camp has been suspended 50 games for substance abuse. I'll go out on a limb and say that this signals the end of Matt Camps career in the Cubs organization, maybe in pro-baseball http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110831&content_id=23996646&notebook_id=24011274&vkey=notebook_chc&c_id=chc
  8. Then we wouldn't want to hire them as GM now would we? I guess not. If freidman is happy in Tampa, and Epstein and Cashman already have all of the money and resources at their disposal, what would it take to get any of these guys to come to the Cubs? Make them GM, and they have free reign of the team. They can spend what they want, within reason. They can chose their own manager and all that fun stuff. It's probably throwing up a prayer, as I don't know how likley it is to pry these guys away from their cushy jobs, but that would hold more value than a different title. If Cashman or Epstein were to come to the Cubs, my guess is that it would be for the purposes of being the guy to end the longest drought in American spots history more so than the money, although the money would be a close 2nd. This being said, they'd want to be the guy to put the team together, AKA, The GM.
  9. Never heard of this guy until this post, but apparently he's been around since '05. Looks like he's bounced from Boise to Daytona to Tennessee to Iowa this year. Looks like they were functional promotions rather than performance based.
  10. Can't say he didn't earn it. Hopefully he he gets some decent PT before inevitably heading off to the land of the rising sun, but it could be difficult when our starting 1B is a lefty. LaHair has played a bit of outfield as well though, hopefully in less of a comical fashion than Jake Fox. Im going to assume that Rebel Ridling ends up in Iowa as a corresponding move.
  11. And do what then? Tell the GM what to do? Then he's essentially the GM with a fancier title, and you're paying for 2 GMs.
  12. He may not be retiring, but his season, and likely tenure with the Cubs is at an end. Just out of curiosity, how often is it that a big name, big money player is publicly railroaded off his team? Not often, Manny Ramirez is the only other non Cubs example I can think of in recent years, and The Cubs have done it 3 times in the past 6 with Sosa, Bradley, and now Z.
  13. But the problem is, as we'vebeen saying, team president does not make the player personel decisions. Do we want to hire Brian Cashman to put together the best damn PR department in baseball? No, we want someone to put the baseball team together. I think that The GM title is sufficent under the condition that he has complete control of the player personel, within reason money wise.
  14. In additon to being a baseball team, the Cubs go well beyong to being a company. a business. There are a ton of employees from legal to PR and marketing to the Wrigley grounds crew and vending. My point is, there is a lot of personel and business going on all around the company itself that does not pertain to the players themselves. This is who Kenney should be presiding over, and leaving the baseball side to the GM and his people. Kenney can decide who they hire in the marketing department. The GM will decide whose on first and what's on second.
  15. Thanks, I was having problems copying and pasting that. Interesting. Are there any kind of Olympic type things going on this fall/winter? Maybe they're having trouble recruiting big leaguers for the Team USA stuff and they're extending it to prospects?
  16. Was that intended to be serious or just a pointless crack at Crane Kenney? Serious, but sarcastic knowing that Kenney is in the way of the Cubs offering his title to someone like Epstein. Although, maybe in the end, Ricketts is willing to change Kenney's title and offer it to one of the "big fish"? It may take a promotion offer in order to hire Epstein, Cashman or Freidman. I think it's safe to say that Kenney will be kep away fromthe baseball operations. Ricketts specifically said that the GM reports to him, and if Kenney gets in the way, that's his funeral.
  17. I wonder if that's any indication that we'll bee seeing Jackson in Chicago soon.
  18. So if this offer is for real, this could very well throw a wrench in the plans of anyone hoping to sign Kemp or Ethier in 2013.
  19. Was that intended to be serious or just a pointless crack at Crane Kenney?
  20. Also has time to get worse. If DeWitt were cut today he'd find a team pretty quickly too. Teams will take a young guy who's had solid value in the MLB and can spot start in multiple spots. Any time that you have a utility infielder who is slightly competant with the bat, they'll be able to find work. Look at Aaron Miles.
  21. If Baez and Szczur are both injured, that would just be the moldy cherry on top of this [expletive] sunday of a season. Maybe he just made a mind bogglingly bad play, or maybe they just wanted Darvill to get PT as well. It's not like Darvill is a 24 year old to be cast aside.
  22. is that because he really liked hendry or because he assumed that hendry would just give him some moronic amount of money like he's done with some other players? I think that it's pretty safe to say that even if Hendry had stuck around, his giving out moronic amounts of money days would be over, unless it was to an elite player, and I'm sure that guys like Aramis were well aware of that. From everything I hear, Hendry is very well liked in the baseball world, by pretty much everyone other than Cubs fans.
  23. Looking at the Elias Rankings, Aramis Ramirez is a Type B, while Orlando Hudson, Jeff Keppinger, and Placido Polanco are Type As, so I guess I'll never fully understand how that works.
  24. So it's not a team option, it's a mutual option as I thought from the beginning. If this is the case, someone will like offer him something along the lines of a 3/35-40 deal with some added incentives. This is a case where you absolutely have to offer arbitration. Question: if we do pick up the option, and he declines, can we still offer arb and receive the picks? He is a type A by now, right?
  25. Cashner pitched 1 perfect with 1 K. Other notable I Cubs: Jackson 0-3, 2 BB Flaherty 2-5 HR LeMahieu 2-5 3B Daytonas twitter mentions Optiz in for Szczur in the 6th but no mention of why. It would suck if he got hurt just as he was heating up.
