  1. I think the FO would prefer a young arm, ala Z for Volstad, but what would the reaction here be if this came to fruition? Is there anyone to buy lower on than Roberts? If he has a revival, he'd be good trade bait. If we picked up enough salary and kicked in another player or prospect(excuse the generalization but I don't know what it would take) wed we have a snowballs chance in hell at getting Marusz or Britton? Theo loves him some former top prospects, especially both being only 24-25.
  2. Even if we do trade Marmol would it be more proactive to give various younger guys the chance? Carpenter and Shark would be first in line. Casey Weathers is said to have wicked stuff and if he could learn control he could get a chance. Not sure if Dolis has what it takes, but he could get a look too.
  3. Please. stop. posting. Ah yes, the poor mans Nuts&Gum.
  4. Now doesn't Rizzo put LaHair in an interesting situation? It's one thing for a veteran player to know that the new kid will come for his job sooner than later, but with LaHair, despite his age how often is it that a rookie is given a full time starting opportunity with the full knowledge that his permanant replacement is a slump or injury away?
  5. It is possible they are close to making another trade and need to wait for that to happen in order to clear the 40 man spot. Otherwise there are no obvious guys that can be dropped unless they try to put someone like Casey Coleman through waivers. Not sure how much interest there were would be in him and whether Theo and Jed would even care if he was claimed. Could they remove Jeff Bianchi? He was claimed on waivers from KC so does he have to stay on the 40 man roster? The front office liked Bianchi enough to pick him up off waivers so I doubt they waive him so quickly to add another pitcher. If they have to drop someone from the 40 man roster to make room I have to think it most likely would be a pitcher. Either someone they think they can safely get through waivers or someone they wouldn't care if they lost. Judging by the recent dealing that's been done, I woudnt be surprised to hear about trades that we aren't even fathoming at this point. Soto, Soriano, Byrd, Marmol, Dempster, Wells, DeWitt, Baker, Russell, Maine, and even Coleman are all guys that could be traded out of nowhere for prospects. Campana, Mateo, and Cabrera are guys on the 40 man that I could see making it through waivers unclaimed.
  6. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: This is the quintessential WSR post. He makes some stupid offhanded remark, everyone calls him on why it's [expletive], and then he follows up with a rambling post like this, trying to cover his tracks. Eh, criticism from the Robs and Tigers of the world who are known for their knowledge of advanced stats is one thing, but from a guy who dedicates 95% of his posts to bitching about things doesn't quite phase me.
  7. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Hell, give yourself a cyber concussion for all I care. That's not going to make me change my point of view no matter how many people piss on it.
  8. Sickels projects Rizzo to fall somewhere between Ryan Howard(absolute ceiling) and Chris Davis(WCS). I always viewed Rizzo as more of a .mid average(.280s) mid power (25 HR/low .500s slg).
  9. Keep in mind that he also suffered from non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2008. Part of the increase in stats is moving to the PCL. Part of it is maturing as a player. Part of it is also getting further away from his disease. but that's the good hodgkins, right? I wasn't aware that there were good forms of cancer.
  10. Can't quite tell if he's saying that there's still the chance of going after Fielder or if there never was a legit pursuit.
  11. when they're still calling castro a rapist in 2019 tell me if it's annoying If he's been found innocent or 8 years earlier, either who cares or it will have blown over. If he's found guilty, maybe he deserves it.
  12. Don't think so. Hasn't really been getting much press at all, even in the Chicago area. I know Castro isn't Big Ben or Kobe but he's pretty big here.
  13. Somewhat surprised by some of Sickels list, but I like it. Rather surprised that he puts Jackson ahead of Rizzo as being a more complete player. That's pretty good considering that Rizzo is said to be a top 40 guy. Also surprised that 3 of the top 20 are guys acquired in the past few weeks (Cates, Sappelt, Torryes). Have any other lists rankes Vogelsbach or Rhee that high?
  14. When I referred to him as the possiblity of being our Ortiz, it doesn't mean that he'd be as good as Ortiz. That it could be a cheap signing that pays off big. I know he's 32 but assuming that we are back in contention in 2-3 years, he'd be 34-35 and could still be a part of the picture. Pulling a guy like Ortiz for something like 1.5 mil as Theo originally signed him is more of a once in a lifetime type of thing. However, if Hawpe could give us something like his .288/.384/.518/.902, the average of his '06-'09 seasons with around 25 HR on a minor league deal, would that not be a huge win? Again, while there's currently no obvious spot for him, he's still worth the risk considering the fact that the majority of our outfield is very disposable. Say we trade Soriano. The season opens with an outfield of Hawpe, Byrd, DeJesus with 2 of Sappelt, Johnson, Campana as the 4-5. Assuming Jackson starts out well in Iowa, trade Byrd and call him up. That gives us 3 lefties starting in the outfield, plus a lefty 1st and 3rd basemen. A lot of lefties Then you have Sappalt and Johnson on the bench when facing the tougher lefties. Also, if LaHair looks awful in the first months of the season but Rizzo not quite ready, put Hawpe at 1st. This is all assuming that Hawpe looks good in spring training.
  15. Yet, you just said this in a another thread: I can't imagine it's a possibility Jed and Theo would consider. What would we do with him? The question that's been attached to most of this years signings. Do you just jump from side to side depending on which thread you're in and hope no one notices? Also, give me a break. Giving Kerry a couple million is not going to detract from what Theo's doing with the rest of the roster. If Reed Johnson deserves a million and a half to be a fifth outfielder, Kerry should get paid too. Also, pot-kettle-black re: "figuring it out." I'm not seeing the conflict here Art. That is the question attached to all of the signings, which is not to say there's a method to the madness. In regards to the first thing you pasted from another thread, if you don't get the context of the conversation it may sound like I'm against most of what he's done. The context was basically that if these players are low risk enoug it can't hurt to stock up and see what you have. As for Wood, in this very thread I stated that if they want to give Wood 2-2.5 mil, it's fine. However, if another team wants to give him more, he should take it. No point in overpaying for a reliever in what's likely to be a lost season.
  16. Different scenario but that low risk that pays huge dividends. Doubtful that he'd be quite the monster that Ortiz was but if he could go back to what he was from '06-'09 that would be pretty huge. Without looking, how old do you think Brad Hawpe is? Also, how old do you think David Ortiz was when Epstein pulled him off the scrap heap? The scrap heap where he was sitting on an .839 OPS to boot. TT:32 Rob: not sure Xzeroseizureinducingavatar: in Hawpes prime he was OPSing well above .839, thoug it was in Coors vs. the Metrodome. When I said Ortiz, I meant it as a huge payoff on a low risk. I understand that Hawpe is a former pseudo star looking to make a comeback as opposed to Ortiz, a one time highly touted prospect who finally had a breakout.
  17. If they did, they'd need big league talent in return. What if they sent him to Atlanta for something like Hayward, Jurrjens, and another one of their young staters(Hanson, Beachy, Vizcaino, Teheran, Minor, god they're stacked ) or relievers (Venters, O'Flaherty, probably not Kimbrel). That could be tough to turn down.
  18. Different scenario but that low risk that pays huge dividends. Doubtful that he'd be quite the monster that Ortiz was but if he could go back to what he was from '06-'09 that would be pretty huge.
  19. Well, I'm going to go jump off a skyscraper Hope you're healed in time for 2013.
  20. And Corpas and Sonnenstine. That's 3 of our 4 signings. If cheap enough, they all make some degree of sense. We don't have spots open in the bullpen? Even without Marshall, we still had more than enough big league ready guys to put together a solid pen. However, if cheap enough it couldnt hurt to add a few more options. At this time, we don't need another outfielder, but judging by what's happening you can never tell who will be next out the door and Hawpe would be a textbook low risk/high reward. Dare I say he could be our Ortiz?
  21. I can't imagine it's a possibility Jed and Theo would consider. What would we do with him? It makes a little sense to bring him into spring training. The Rizzo/LaHair competition at 1B could use a little push from a veteran bat. Of course, I sincerely doubt Theo and Jed would give him a spot on the Opening Day roster regardless of his performance. So he probably wont sign with us unless his agent is a total nincompoop or he really can't get an invite anywhere else. If the plan is for Jackson to start the season in AAA, then he could platoon with Soriano or if Soriano is traded he could have left with Reed and Campana as the 4th and 5th. If he could get back to form he'd be our 3 or 4 hitter. The theme of pretty much every acquisition we've made so far had been either if he can regain his old form or if he can finally become what he was once projected to.
  22. I can't imagine it's a possibility Jed and Theo would consider. What would we do with him? The question that's been attached to most of this years signings. What? The only signing you can say that about is Johnson. And Corpas and Sonnenstine. That's 3 of our 4 signings. If cheap enough, they all make some degree of sense.
  23. No one in this thread has said Starlin is a rapist, just that it is among the possibilities, and mentioning that it is isn't some kind of travesty or miscarriage of justice. The timeline here here seems to be the best source of hope that this thing might not have real teeth. Regardless, the only really palatable outcome (at least to me) would be for the whole thing to be proven to be BS. Even if it is complete BS I don't know how it's possible to prove it. The closest thing at this point would be for the girl to come out and either admit she made the whole thing up or to admit that it was consensual and even if that were to happen his reputation would meet fully heal as there would be talk that hush money(oh that word) came into play whether it did or not.
  24. I can't imagine it's a possibility Jed and Theo would consider. What would we do with him? The question that's been attached to most of this years signings.
  25. He OPSd in the .900 neighborhood every year from 2006-2009. I'm not sure if injuries derailed him or he just stopped being good, but seeing as he did just come off TJS I don't see why he's not worth a look. Also, I could be completely wrong, but wasn't he the one who hit the liner that managed to catch Mark Prior right in the elbow? Either that or he might have been on base at the time.
