  1. It's another case of judging a trade in hindsight. Stewart's ceiling was and is higher than Colvin's. This being said, the fact that Stewart's going to have this season ending surgery it makes me want to keep him for next year even more. If it turns out that his wrist really was the root of his problems, I'd love to have him when he's fully healthy. When it comes to trades involving prospects or young "change of scenery" players, you really can't blame the GMs involved for how it all turns out. How many times has a GM been criticized for trading away top prospects for an over priced veteran or a rent a player? remember the prospect package the Pirates got in the Manny/Bay trade? On the other side, what about Mr. Moneyball trading Car Go and Houston Street for Matt Holliday, which ultimately turned into Michael Taylor?
  2. With a line of .378/.481/.556, is Jenner Emeterio close to joining the ranks of Amaya and Hernandez as another exciting young MI prospect? And can they please just send Encarnacion to Boise or Peoria?
  3. shocking He forgot to tell God he's not a Cub anymore.
  4. Chris Volstad picking up where he left off. There is nothing to see here. Truth be told, we have no big league ready starting pitching prospects worth a damn, so I'd much prefer give him the rest of the season to try and right the ship than bring up something useless like Ridrigo Lopez or Casey Coleman. At 25, Volstad still has a glimmer of hope. The alternate options do not. And for what it's worth, Samardzjia was horrible until he was 26.
  5. Like it or not, they could be the best fit. They have an incredibly deep farm system and have been hemmorhaging young players out of nowhere for the past few years now. I'd happily swing a deal with them for Garza and Marmol. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them in on Hamels as well.
  6. I'm going to ignore the mockery and just say that a big reason why they don't see Soriano as likely to be traded is due to the contract. If the Cubs are in fact willing to eat a good 95+% of it, I'm going to say that he'd either crack that list or not be too far behind.
  7. They left out the part where he turned to Sveum and said "a bunting tournament? seriously? what the [expletive]." and walked off.
  8. he's not. He moved him from CF to RF. I understand that he's spent the majority of the season at RF, but considering the fact that our current CF options are Johnson and Campana, for all preactical purposes, he's our CF. Moving him back to RF is with the assumption that Brett is ready to take over CF, which is a bold one.
  9. So he did end up getting more votes than Ryan Howard and Ken Griffey Jr.
  10. Just using internal options, this is a look at what the 2013 opening day roster might look like if they were top not re sign any impending free agents. Playersare those I dont expect back at all. Bolded are those who may be gone, with no real internal answer to replace them. 1B Rizzo 2B Barney SS Castro 3B Valbuena Stewart LF Soriano CF DeJesusB. Jackson RF LaHair DeJesus C Soto Castillo SP 1 Garza SP 2 Dempster Volstad SP 3 Shark SP 4 Wood SP 5 Maholm CL Marmol BP Russell BP Camp Cabrera BP Ascenio Beliveau BP Coleman Rhoderick BP Corpas J. Jackson BP Maine Bowden BP Dolis Bench Clevenger Bench Johnson Sappelt Bench Mather Valbuena Bench BakerCardenas Bench Campana LaHair Additional internal options Vitters IF Raley SP Rusin SP Wells SP Hatley BP Antigua BP Batista BP
  11. I suppose we could send him to Japan, but after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they might view it as strike 3.
  12. So is 7 IP 4 H 1 R 1/11 BB/K considered a good enough rebound outting?
  13. I'm even later on this, but Barney essentially saved the game there. Had he not made those 2 plays, and then the Bourn IF single, things could have gotten very ugly in a hurry. Next thing you know, we'd be looking at either bases loaded or 1st and 3rd with a run in an no outs with Prado, Heyward, and Chipper coming up and those insufferable tomahawk chops becoming deafening.
  14. I think it would be pretty cool if Starlin Castro would break out of his slump.
  15. And Szczur cracks the other players considered group.
  16. As of now, the 2&3 3 pitching prospects, 6-7 overall are still on the board. Jose Castillo (Venezuela) and Luiz Gohara (Brazil), both lefties. any chance we get one?
  17. Any chance that Detroit would give up Scherzer and 2 of Turner/Oliver/Crosby/Smyly for Garza&Dempster, and whatever they want from the clearence bin?
  18. Another decent comparison is Chase Headley, who didn't hit AAA until he was 24, when in 65 games /295 PA, hit .305/.383/.556 with 13 HR.
  19. Looking over the other 1st Base options, there's Paul Goldschmidt with 11 HR, .292/.367/.540 and Allen Craig, in only 39 games with 11 HR .311/.382/.608. Maybe the player vote was done around Memorial Day.
  20. While the talk as of late has been about trading Soriano and LaHair, it looks like as far as position players go, DeJesus could be out most valuable asset. 4.25 mil for 2013 and the 6 mil option for 2014 are a huge bargain, even if he puts up the numbers he currently is. DeJesus isn't the type of player who's going to turn a bad team good, but if you're looking to add a bat to a solid lineup, he's be one of the better options available, and he can play CF anf RF. While his power numbers arent what they were before 2011, his OBP is right where it's always been, actually a few points above average. There have been several teams showing interest in Jeff Francoeur, who's OPS is at .680 and has never been an OBP guy, so perhaps they'd be interested in DeJesus.
  21. Doubtful. If anything, we'll be seeing him in November. For now, I expect to see a lot of Luis Valbuena, although I'd prefer to call back Cardenas to see what he can do as a full time player. There's really no need to play Baker or Mather too much.
  22. wanna bet? FA options are Maicer Izturis, Placido Polanco, Mark Reynolds, Scott Rolen, and Ty Wiggington. Like Dave, I thinly there's a good chance he misses the rest of the season. If he comes back next year, we give him another look. If not, and maybe even if he does, Josh Vitters could start next year. If the feel he's not ready, then you find a bridge until he is like Valbuen or Cardenas. There's no reason to spend any amount of money of those guys.
  23. http://cubbiescrib.com/2012/07/01/ian-stewarts-hints-towards-surgery-being-out-for-a-long-time/ If he does have surgery, I just hope he's still with us when he returns to full strength. If it turns out that the wrist was the primary cause of his problems, I'd love to see what he can do when finally healthy.
  24. There's a joke in there somewhere. The punchline involves Felix Pie. I feel we've been here before.
