    After seeing Villanueva and Rusin today I would say let's go with Wada and Beeler in the rotation. I think that the plan was always Wada and Beeler, with Straily ultimately taking over for him. The Villanueva/Rusin tandem was simply because nobody else was ready to go this afternoon. Though I'd be interested in stretching out Grimm as another option.

    I think it's a Johan Santana type situation where a trade doesn't get agreed upon unless the acquiring team agrees to an extension before hand. If Stanton refuses outright and insists on testing free agency, then both teams are [expletive] on Stanton. That is something I did not consider in that rambling. Are you kidding? Stanton is exactly what we need. I'd give up that package in a heartbeat for Stanton. That gives us not only a strong foundation of proven young stars in Stanton, Castro, and Rizzo, but with Bryant, Baez or Russell, Schwarber, Alcantara, and McKinney, our farm is still just as strong as it was going into the season.

    If there was anything, anything at all, it would be all over Twitter. My guess is that it's more the foolish musing of some Mets fan who read too much into all the talk of the Cubs being stacked at SS, and it escalated on some Mets board. Niese is 27 and under team control through 2017, so I'd maybe move Alcantara for him, but neither Baez nor Russell are possibilities.

    Somebody explain to me how WAR for pitchers works, because looking at some of these,, I find myself baffled. Brian Schlitter and James Russell have been sold middle relievers. Schlitter's is 1.1, Russell's 0.8. However, Hector Rondon has been an incredibly effective closer all season long. His WAR is only 0.2. Even more baffling: Dallas Beeler pitched 6 strong innings. His WAR is 0.3. Travis Wood has been a solid 4 starter all season long. His WAR is also 0.3. Help me make sense of it all.

    Almora is a top 20-25; if McKinney is a slightly better version of him, that makes him a top 20-25 prospect. And I still fully expect Raul Alcantara to be the PTBNL unless his recovery reports put up a red flag. So that's a Top 10 prospect, a top 20-25 prospect, a nice project for Bosio, and possibly a high ceiling pitching prospect. It's no Gausman and Bundy, but I don't think anyone really expected that to happen.

    I agree, I honestly think that if he stays healthy he's our safest of the big/impact prospects. Which is just insane. It could be argued that Soler is like our 7th best prospect. How many organizations would kill to have him as their top guy? In terms of pure offensive ceiling, Soler was number 1. Baez has it in terms of position, overall value and the like:

    One side effect of this trade is that we've done a number on the market for starting pitchers, and there are plenty of teams in need. The Yankees lost Sabathia for a while, and I suspect that that's a big reason why Beane was so quick to jump on two of the top options on the market before the Yanks could proceed. We may have just made Edwin Jackson a very attractive target to those in need of SP that don't have what it takes to land Price or Lee.

    By winter, we should be looking at a depth chart of: 1B Rizzo 2B Alcantara, Valbuena SS Castro, Baez, Russell 3B Baez, Bryant, Valbuena, Olt LF Bryant, Lake, Ruggiano CF Ruggiano, Sweeney RF Soler, Lake, Ruggiano C Castillo SP Arrieta, Wood, Jackson, Wada, Hendricks, Straily, Grimm BP Rondon, Ramirez, Strop, Vizcaino, Rivero, Wright, Parker, Grimm, Hatley, Schlitter. Maybe Fujikawa, not sure what's with him. And a payroll of around $30-40MM I'd like to add an OF bat and a front end SP and a Bosio project or two, but I'll assume that even after arbitration, we'll be looking at at least $40-50MM to play with.

    Not only that, unless I'm missing someone, Rizzo is second james russell And Barney. Kind of Brian Schlitter.

    What about an IFA signing? Raul Alcantara makes perfect sense. Out for the season, I believe, and they could simply be awaiting reports on his physical progress.

    The rotation of Arrieta, Wood, Jackson, Wada, Straily isn't as vomit inducing as the post trade rotations of the past few years, but with Shark gone, as well as any hope of Gausman or Bundy, we're going to need to be in on Leater and Scherzer in the winter.

    A. Billy Beane is NOT going to give up his top prospect for a rental, unless said prospect is set to destruct the moment the ink dries on the tic-tac no trade backs clause. B. How many imminent trades have actually happened for us? They're usually ninjad out nowhere.

    7.5 games out of the 2nd wildcard spot may not give reason to start printing playoff tickets, but it's the closest thing to optimism in 5 years. Think they'll hold off on any sale plans?

    The Cubs actually look like a good team, as opposed to a bad one lucking into a win streak. Too little too late? Probably, but still fun to watch.

    Chances are we're paying him more as an assistant than the Padres would as a GM. Besides, if Theo has managed to persuade one of sports' most anxious fan bases to be patient for a few more years, surely he had little to no trouble convincing his buddy to stick around.

    Ummm, of the Jan. 2012 top 10, one is our starting catcher; one is a beloved top-10 overall prospect in AAA right now; one can't hit but has ... nope nevermind not gonna say anything good about Junior Lake; one is still a moderately not-hated prospect at Daytona. It's not earth-shattering, but it wasn't a complete whiff either. I'm going off of the mlb.com 2011 list. #1 was Rizzo, who of course wasn't inherited by Theo. beyond that; 2&3 Brett and Szczur: if not roster filler, they're very close. 4. Carpenter: Japan? 5. McNutt: Suspended animation of some sort. 6. Vitters: Also essentially roster filler, although he's still got a year or two of the youngish for AAA defense. 7. Dolis somewhere in Giants system. 8. Jay Jackson somewhere in Indians system. 9-10. Golden and Simpson: out of baseball, or maybe in some indie league.
