  1. Are you saying you believe KB over Charles the Cat?
  2. By which team?
  3. I find it amazing that any writer is still mentioning the Cubs as a possibility after everything that has been written and said.
  4. All of us are monitoring what's happening with with them too. Doesn't mean any of us are going to sign them either.
  5. PTR is waiting for the new mayor to eliminate the amusement tax in 2020. :-k
  6. Nobody? We signed Daniel Decalso. How quick some people forget. [-X
  7. I'm not sure all of Chatwood's salary would disappear because it's unlikely somebody is going to pick it all up. That's why everybody was suggesting bad contract trades earlier. As for Russell, we gave him a new contract, so we're obligated to pay it. I agree Gonzalez would be a good fit if PTR would open his wallet.
  8. If you think the Cubs are cheap, I suggest you look at the Yankees. They could easily sign both Harper and Machado and instead they’re choosing LeMahieu. Don't speak too soon, they may end up with at least one of them anyhow.
  9. Yeah, not likely with his injury history added to his age.
  10. I don't know about handing Tulo the starting SS job, but it certainly had something to do with money.
  11. It really is. I believe the Cubs could carry a $300 million dollar payroll if ownership allowed. I don’t mind trading weaker players, but not if they’re just dumping salary to make a one time splurge. If it’s to build the best roster $300 million can buy OTOH...oh, then they could probably handle a $350 million payroll — https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/12/3-remaining-needs-nl-east.html Who says no first in a Kintzler for D’Arnaud swap? Also, I still feel the Braves are a fit for Heyward and the Cubs can get a pitcher for him. Phillies too, but they have to lose out on Harper and Machado (which they probably will) I'd be all for that trade. I keep going back to the SFG rumor. I wonder if there's a way for a three-team deal to unload Heyward and one of Kintzler/Duensing on the Giants, and Chatwood to another team, with prospects involved. Something like SF gets Heyward, Duensing, Happ, Mets prospect Cubs get Cueto/Melancon, Watson, D'Arnaud Mets get Chatwood, Kintzler, Cubs prospect I like the Kintzler for D'Arnaud deal too, but in your thhree-team deal the Mets are adding quite a bit of money and not getting much quality (depending on the Cubs prospect).
  12. Avoid the bidding war and being used to drive the price up. Find out the best offer and then go to PTR to see if he'll beat/match it.
  13. I get that the millions make it harder to understand, but without knowing your income, if your boss guaranteed you that you’d make $100k per year pretty much no matter what for 10 years, and then another company offered you $133k per year for 4 years, would you really consider the second offer if the jobs were the same? Yes, no question. But that job won't become unhaveable when I turn 40, so not a real comparison. Yeah, not really a comparison when 1-2 years of $40million sets you, your kids, and your grandchildren up for life.
  14. The discussion is all hypothetical about what he would receive (long term or short term). Since we being hypothetical, if his best offer was $300/10 yrs (with opt outs) I could see him accepting accepting $200 million/5 yrs (with opt outs) and hitting FA again at 28/29 years old when salaries have increased with new money floating around (i.e. Cubs network). I can’t see him leaving $100 mil on the table just to make ~$30 more million with the 4/5 year contract. That’s too risky and he still gets the opt out chance to hit another big deal and securing more guaranteed money in the event something goes wrong by going 10/300 over 5/200. I totally get it, but let's not forget we have egos (Harper and Boras) involved and all of the talk/hype about $400 million and the highest paid player in MLB history. If the best offer is $300 million/10 yrs (hypothetically), they might have some explaining to do. It certainly would be a nice situation to be in, kind of like deciding if you want the 20 year payments or the lump sum payment after winning the mega-millions lottery.
  15. Harper made a point of wanting to be the highest paid player in MLB. If that doesn't happen with the long term offers, he could justify it by saying he had the highest average annual salary (for a shorter term). Well then he’s a horsefeathering idiot for leaving $100-200 million guaranteed on the table by taking a 4/5 year deal, since the long term deal will allow him to hit FA again with opt outs as already mentioned. The discussion is all hypothetical about what he would receive (long term or short term). 16. If there's an opt out in those 4/5 years, he might think about it with all that money up front and still be able to become a FA at 29 years old. Then again he might take the deal without opt outs since he would only be 30/31 years old with a lot of earning potential still ahead of him. He’s going to get opt outs in the 8-12 year deal too, that guarantees and secures him more money and allows him to hit FA around 29/30 as well. It just makes no sense for the 4/5 year deal unless he’s literally getting $50 mil a year. Harper made a point of wanting to be the highest paid player in MLB. If that doesn't happen with the long term offers, he could justify it by saying he had the highest average annual salary (for a shorter term).

  18. The door certainly would be wide open for the Cubs if they were having a "normal" offseason. I guess we'll have to wait and see what other moves are made by the Cubs and other teams before really knowing what to expect for 2019.
  19. Maybe they cleared money so that they could trade for Heyward.   I really need to look into getting a dislike button. It's a joke. Chill out.
  20. Jeff Passan is saying that this move alone won't clear up enough space to sign Harper and stay under the tax, but it certainly makes it a lot easier to swing a trade to clear the remaining. Hypothetically they could use this space on multiple other free agents rather than just Harper but its hard for me to see a team making a move like this if they weren't trying to get a generational talent. Edit: Also their OFs are something like Enrique Hernandez, Joc Pederson, Andrew Toles and Chris Taylor. They will be almost assuredly acquiring another OF. Maybe they cleared money so that they could trade for Heyward.
  21. $23 million next year and then $5 million buyout.
  22. The newspaper used to be pretty conservative, but it has moved slightly to the left. It used to be that their political endorsements would be basically very Republican unless a Democrat was running unopposed.
  23. Kinda glad we avoided him. His contract wasn’t bad or anything but would hope we are aiming higher. Robertson, Allen, Ottavino, Britton (if medicals check out and they feel good), etc. Do we have the money to aim higher?
  24. This offseason has been Trumpian in that every bad story has been topped by another bad story within days of the last one.
  25. So that's how they fit him into the budget. Now if we can convince Harper to do a deal like that.
