  1. We would probably have to clear some payroll to afford him at a few million.
  2. If we sign him we might have the inside track on getting his cousin Enrique to sing the 7th inning stretch. Those relative connections really worked for the White Sox (or not).
  3. Obviously they have the potential to do better, but last year they had 1.5, .9,1.6,and .6 for Schwarber, Almora, Heyward, and Happ according to Baseball Reference.
  4. You mean someone like Rivera that just signed a minor league deal?
  5. I'd be careful if I were "the Rizz". PTR always looking for a deal. PTR would wait for Lester, Darvish, Hamels,Bryant, and Zobrist to make the same offer before he would budge.
  6. Good thing for Theo & company because we really don't have any (pitching prospects). Ahead of the curve again, amirite? Apparently there aren't any good FA's either.
  7. Let's not forget that he used the state to pay for his stadium while he is raking in tons of $$$$.
  8. Trump has a better chance of his emergency getting through Congress than Theo getting it through PTR.
  9. Can we count Ryan Dempster? Better yet can we count owners?
  10. The baseball part of the front office acquired Chapman and Murphy and re-signed Russell.
  11. I guess you keep forgetting that we don't have any money too. #-o
  12. I posted something positive and you start with the negative "schtick". All winter people have posted about the lack of transactions by the Cubs, so I'm assuming that they also thought that some roster positions could be improved even though "The Cubs won 95 games last year with way more going wrong than right." On what planet is what you wrote a positive comment? Are you so jaded that you honestly believe that writing "Yeah, the Cubs are fine as long as everything goes right, but the odds of everything going right over a long season aren't great" is positive? There's only two sentences in your post. Let's look at the second one... "Since they didn't spend the money or make any trades (yet), we have to hope the semi-injured bounce back, the old-timers stay "young" for another year, and everyone stays healthy." Yeah, still no. Please explain how you think either of the above statements is positive. I guess I shouldn't have used "everything" has to go right, but I don't think very many of us are comfortable with the lack of activity while other teams improved. We are still "the team to beat" in the NL Central and we should win the Division easily if Darvish and Bryant return to their norms.
  13. The Cubs won 95 games last year with way more going wrong than right. I’d ask you to pick a new schtick but I know you don’t have it in you to avoid bad faith arguments. 15. Giants signed Rene Rivera to minor league contract. I guess we can't even afford minor league deals anymore.
  16. He's only part thick rust belt boy. He's also show choir boy who escaped rust belt home town. Based solely on his walk-up music, he’s probably the least Republican guy on the team. I would think that the people of color on the team would be less Republican.
  17. Theo's insider information: Schwarber is a good baseball player (and passable LF) And would be a great DH.
  18. Theo must have had inside information which is why he said early in the offseason that Schwarber wasn't available.
  19. Apparently they didn't want to upstage Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, or groundhog day either.
  20. If Hamels and Quintana's contracts come off the books, that is two starting rotation spots they have to fill with zero likely internal options. If Strop's contract comes off the books, that's a huge bullpen arm they have to fill with a new reliever, again likely with zero internal options. They aren't declining Rizzo's options. Their pitching prospects are terrible. And while the rotations is theoretically set, it is old and will be in need of external acquisitions, which will cost money or prospects, and they don't have prospects. The 2020/2021 pitching staff is a mess and is going to cost a lot of money to fix. I agree with Hamels, Quintana, and Strop costing big money to replace because of our crappy pitching prospects, but you still need bodies to replace Morrow, Chishek, and Kintzler too. That's 2 starters, a closer, a set-up guy, a decent reliever, and a replaceable arm. Unless Harper/Machado are planning to be two way players like Ohtani, I'm not sure we can afford them.
  21. It would be great if our FO tried even it was only to make us feel great.
  22. Having him show up at the Convention didn't happen, so we might as well hope for spring training. If that doesn't happen, we can hope for opening day.
  23. I don’t see why not. They’ve got a who’s who of decent enough players most fans couldn’t name + Aaron Nola and post-prime McCutchen. They’re the third or fourth most interesting team in their own division, and might also be third or fourth best even with him. What could be more appealing? Well he tried playing with a bunch of big names (Scherzer, Strasburg, Rendon, Turner, Zimmerman, etc.) and that didn't work out very well.
  24. The Cubs are fine as long as everybody is healthy and playing up to their abilities, but unfortunately that isn't likely over a 162 game schedule. Since it doesn't look like there will be any major changes to the roster, let's hope for minimal problems with health and regession in production. The Dodgers were already better than the Cubs and they are adding players. Adding a healthy and productive Darvish and Morrow and Bryant returning to an MVP-status player makes us better than we were, but can we count on all of that to last for the whole season in addition to worrying about age catching up to Lester, Morrow, Hamels, and Zobrist is another question.
