  1. I agree with you about monitoring both of them for the rest of the season. 85-90 pitches for both of them in each start will give them a good shot at a win and will give the Cubs a chance to evaluate some guys out of the bullpen.
  2. Sound like a couple of differing viewpoints to me. What else is new. Contrary to what Hendry says about being on the same page as Baker, they are not. Are those the same paying customers that have been begging you to play the kids all year? As for "respecting the game", How is it respecting the game by sending out a bunch of veterans who don't can't execute the fundamentals of baseball?
  3. I assume since we are giving up 7 players for Garrett Anderson, the Angels are paying his whole salary. I like Anderson too, but 7 players for him?????
  4. If you want to convince Giles to come to Chicago, all you have to do is show him his splits while in Chicago at Wrigley... AB R H HR RBI AVG OBP SLG OPS 41 18 19 6 19 .463 .593 1.073 1.666 [edit]Those are 2002-2004[/edit] Yea, but that is against Cub pitching.
  5. One thing Dusty could do is play the kids. At least they're closer to Little- League age and probably remember how to play fundamental baseball.
  6. Don't insult the teams playing .500. The Cubs will have to get real hot for the rest of the season to have a shot at .500. I look for them to end up about 5-6 games under .500.
  7. I did the numbers and we can still afford Giles and Ryan while keeping the payroll around 95M this year. With CF (Pie), LF (Murton), SS (Cedeno), we will have some money to go around when its the pitcher's time to cash in. After 2006, Wood, Maddux, Nomar (assuming they bring him back for another year) will free up another ~25M that should be replaced from within cheaply. I don't know where you have been all year, but if you think Baker is going to start Pie, Murton, and Cedeno then you haven't been paying attention. To tell the truth, I'd be very surprized if one of those three gets significant playing time next year.
  8. There's still hope if the Cubs can win about 27 out of the remaining 35 games (.770 ball). Of course if you still believe, I have some land to sell you.
  9. As many of us have posted, the problem with the Cubs is not players like Perez, Macias, Hollandsworth, Patterson, etc. , it is how Baker uses them. Hollandsworth has value as a 4th OF/pinch hitter not a starter. Patterson and Perez should never have been at the top of the lineup. Macias should not be the first person off the bench to pinch hit. The list goes on and on.
  10. Just what we need, a lineup with Perez, Macias, Patterson, and Blanco in addition to the pitcher's spot. Viewers will think they're watching the Little League World Series.
  11. I don't see why people want Lawton back. I think he has been terrible on offense and defense. I think Murton alone can match Lawton on offense and outplay him on defense.
  12. I don't think the Cubs want any part of Manny's contract, especially since most of you are pointing out what a burden the contract is for the Red Sox. Also, if a good team like the Red Sox are trying to get rid of Manny and his contract, why would a mediocre team (Cubs) want Manny and his contract. With the money and prospects you are giving up for Manny, you could fill 2-3 holes on the Cubs. He is an outstanding hitter, but no thanks.
  13. Agreed. And if we do manage to sign Furcal, I doubt the Braves will be anxious to tradeus the rest of their middle infield. Trade for Giles first and then sign Furcal. I agree we have other needs more than a 2B, but Giles and Furcal solidify the middle infield both on offense and defense for many years to come. Also, it solidifies the top of the lineup for many years. Combine them with Lee, Ramirez, Barrett, Pie, Prior, Wood, Zambrano, and some of our pitching prospects and you have the nucleus of an outstanding team for 5-6 years (assuming all players can be kept under contract).
  14. Young pitchers that Mazzone can turn into 20-game winners.
  15. In addition to going after Furcal this offseason, Rotoworld suggested that Marcus Giles is a possible candidate for a trade. Wouldn't it be great to get Furcal and M. Giles for the IF and sign his brother Brian Giles for the OF. A lineup that starts out Furcal, M. Giles, Lee, Ramirez, and B. Giles looks like a winner to me.
  16. I doubt the Cubs have much of a shot @ Damon. With the Yankees needing a cf, they'll probably offer him a long term deal. I can't see the Cubs offering Damon more than 4 years. I'd be cool w/ giving Patterson more time to prove himself in cf. The guy has tons of talent, and could turn out to be an Andruw Jones type. However, if they can trade him for a starter or a hitter that's fine too. As for Pie, it doesn't sound like he'll be quite ready. Ideally, I'd like to see the Cubs get a major upgrade in rf and a defensive upgrade @ either 2b or SS. There is no way that the Cubs would offer Damon 4 years let alone more than 4 years. I think the Cubs would be hard-pressed to offer Damon 3 years since Pie will be ready by 2007 at the latest.
  17. You have to play Patterson to convince some other team that he has untapped potential and is worth trading for him.
  18. I think Matt Murton will get a lot of playing time, but Ronny Cedeno won't. I think the organization is going to use Nomar Garciaparra's remaining time to evaluate him for next season. I think Rich Hill also has a pretty decent shot to return to the rotation. If the Cubs can't cut the lead to four games by September 1 (a very tall order considering the way this team is playing), they'll throw in the towel. I wish they would cut bait sooner, but seeing how this organization has been holding out hope for going on 97 years, what's another week and a half? The reason I suggested Nomar & Cedeno splitting time is to see what Nomar has left and to see if Cedeno can be a full-time SS next year. If Cedeno can play SS, that saves another big chunk of money (Furcal, Nomar, etc.) that can be used at another position.
  19. So Dusty wouldn't have any more excuses about not letting the kids play. When you lose 2 out of 3 to the Rockies when you're fighting for a WC spot, all the doubt is gone. Now is the time to pull off some waiver deals and bring up the kids and let them play. Of course, we all know the Cubs will win 2 out of 3 from the Braves just to tease all of us crazy fans, but every decision on the field from now on should be 80% aimed at next year and 20% aimed at this year. Cedeno & Nomar ought to split time at SS, Murton should be playing everyday with Lawton, Patterson, & Burnitz alternating days off, and Hill and Williams should be given work on a regular basis.
  20. The Cubs are going to have a tough time ending up .500 (81 wins).
  21. It was in today's (Aug. 21st) Chicago Tribune sports page 2. The article was by Phil Rogers (I know I shouldn't trust him) and he was just as amazed as we are. If it is wrong, I apologize but I used his facts and I would assume he checked it before printing it.
  22. I think he will develop some power (20 HR), but why does he have to hit for power. Ichiro plays a corner OF, Tony Gwynn didn't have power, and Pete Rose played corner OF without power. When a team has a corner OF without much power, it needs to get power from non-traditional positions (2B, SS, CF, or C). Players like Arod at SS, Sandberg or Kent at 2B, Griffey, Mays, or Mantle in CF, and Piazza (in his prime) at C allow you to have corner OF without much power.
  23. The last time the Atlanta Braves had a 3-game losing streak was 1980. That's 25 years of never losing more than 2 consecutive games. Now that's what you call consistency.
  24. I would certainly give up a good prospect for him. He will be 35 years old in October and he has 29 saves, 1.29 ERA, .88 WHIP, and .185 BAA and makes about $4 million a year. Also, he strikes me as one of those pitchers that will be around until he is 40-41 years old (maybe not as efficient though). He would be a great addition to the bullpen because of his experience as a closer. Dempster has been great, but he scares the daylights out of me everytime he comes in. Resign Dempster and you have a lefty and a righty with experience as a closer. Sign Wagner and Guardado becomes trade bait or a set-up man. If a deal could be worked out, this is a no-brainer.
  25. CBSsportsline's Rumor Mill mentions that Eddie Guardado has cleared waivers. I don't know the terms of his contract, but it might be time for Hendry to claim him and work out a deal. Guardado instantly improves our bullpen for the rest of this year and the future.
