  1. Compare those decisions to starting Neifi at 2nd Base and batting him 2nd, letting pitchers throw 120+ pitches in a game, etc.
  2. Let me get this straight, the choices are spend $200 million and win the World Series or spend $110 million and continue fighting for 5th place in the weakest division in baseball. I think I'll pick the former.
  3. Proven himself longterm in a crucial position? Wasn't that the big on Dusty when he was hired? How did that work out. "Proven managers" might be one of the few things more overrated than proven veterans. Joe Torre sure as hell wasn't proven, neither was Terry Francona or Ozzie Guillen, how about Scioscia or Brenly? Jack McKeon was the closest thing to a proven manager among the recent winners, yet he didn't win much of anything prior to the Marlins gig. All this proves is that catchers and weak hitting MIFers make the best skippers. Neifi is going to someday manage a team to 14 straight WS victories. He might as long as he avoids using players as bad as he is.
  4. Ben Maller's rumors included a tidbit that Mike Hargrove is in a precarious situation in Seattle and if he is fired, Dusty Baker would jump at the chance to go back to the West Coast.
  5. I think Zambrano needs to do 3 things to win the Cy Young: 1. Improve his WHIP 2. Improve his ERA 3. Lead the league in victories by 2-3 wins The 3rd item will be to counter the lousy season the Cubs have had. Webb and Carpenter will receive a little extra consideration because of the teams they play on.
  6. The real question might be which rookies make the cut and for which teams. Hendry will have to make at least one trade for an impact bat over the winter and the package would probably include some of the pitchers (Marmol/Hill/Marshall/Mateo/Guzman) and possibly Cedeno. Of course, after the Cubs trade them they will all be 20 games winners and Cedeno will be the starting SS in the All-Star game.
  7. I think Pie is the only player who hasn't been called up this year.
  8. It's always refreshing to read such a positive post.
  9. I don't think the Cubs are cursed. pitchers get injured all the time on all teams. That may be true, but I can't believe there are too many teams that have led the league in players on the DL for so long.
  10. I think we need to be patient with a 23 year old player, but with Theriot, Fontenot, and Patterson around, Ronny has to improve. I do think Hendry will be making a blockbuster trade during the off season and Ronny (or Murton) could be part of the package along with a few of our young pitchers for an impact bat.
  11. There's no truth to the rumor that our minor league pitchers are praying that they don't get called up. Anybody who still doesn't think the Cubs are cursed?
  12. At least Leyland has enough sense not to bat him 2nd.
  13. I don't think Dusty is a racist, but having taught in the inner city of Chicago for 34 years, I ran into as many black racists as white. We even had "experts" come in to inservice us and some of them even stated that black people can not be racists. What a crock!!!!!
  14. Well written and you might remind him that the Cubs are the team that honors "Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Sammy Sosa until he became a total jerk, Fergie Jenkins, etc. Racism certainly exists everywhere in America, but the race card is usually played when things are going bad for the person playing the card. Too often the race card is played as an excuse for incompetence.
  15. With 8 pages (already) on Neifi being traded, can you imagine the length of the thread when Dusty gets fired?
  16. Only if they can sign Wells to a long-term extension. Not if he's going to walk after next year. He can solidify our hold on 5th place for this year.
  17. No it's not going to happen this year, but for all of the naysayers I think there is a possibility that this team could be in contention next year. Probably the biggest reason is that it's the NL Central, but I've said all along that I'm hoping for 1 FA signing (Schmidt), 1 impact bat acquired in a trade involving a package of Murton/Cedeno/Pie, Marshall/Hill/Guzman/Marmol/Mateo, plus other prospects, and our share of luck and health (Cubs are way overdue). It would be great if Miller can stick as #4 or #5 starter.
  18. The Yankees were willing to take Cory Lidle from the Phillies as well. And the Cubs couldn't use Cory Lidle?
  19. Disagree completely. If the Astros give up some guys with future value for a 6 week rental, then that benefits the Cubs long-term, and we shouldn't care less about the impact it has this year. If the Astros sign him, they had better hurry because Clemens can't pitch forever (contrary to what he has shown).
  20. Of course, the real question is whether Corey would have produced those numbers with the Wrigley boobirds, the Chicago media, and most of the posters at NSBB pressuring him. I always liked Corey, but he had to leave under the circumstances.
  21. Actually in the article, he hinted that Baker is as good as gone for next year.
  22. There were only 39 people on the 40-man roster because Miller is on the 60-day DL. Interesting that Williams or Ryu wasn't recalled... I think it was a matter of finding the guy who had the appropriate rest. Maybe they wanted a lefty.
  23. This is called addition by subtraction. Since the Cubs aren't going anywhere anyhow, tell the Nationals they can even keep Soriano.
  24. What exactly would be the gamble? The worst thing that happens is you get Soriano for nothing but what is left on his contract the rest of the season. Giving up talent for a month rental. You don't have to give up talent to make the claim. The claim costs a nominal amount of money. It's no risk. As soon as someone claims him, the Nationals will withdraw him and try to arrange a trade (which is where you would have to give up something.).
  25. YES indeed it would be. I'm totally pro BARE BARE. Among other concerns, I hope Dusty sees that he gets enough atbats; given that he's the best hitter on the team, that shouldn't be a problem. According to Yahoo he needs 331 PA's to qualify, and with just the AB's and walks he's got 318. I don't know how many sacrafices he's got but he's closing in on being qualified rather quickly. He might not get the ABs to qualify. Len & Bob were discussing it yesterday and said you need 3.1 AB per game to qualify and after yesterdays game he was something like 6 AB below. They were saying that he would need a few games with 5-6 ABs and not miss too many more games.
