  1. These 2 threads about GMs should really be merged. I dont think most people have even brought up Theo because he's under contract for another year and there's probably 0 chance Boston lets him go.
  2. That would be incredible, but I'm going to assume it's speculation because I don't want to get my hopes to an unreal level. Im guessing the reason most of us havent talked about Theo is because we pretty much consider getting him unrealistic since he's under contract through the end of next year and why would Boston let him go?
  3. You go Kyle, someone needs to put Nuts in his place, he's the one no one cares about.
  4. Well apparently someone finally asked Friedman about the Cubs job... he declined comment. Hey at least he didn't say he wasn't interested. that's via Marc Topkin's twitter he's a writer for the St. Pete times.
  5. I disagree with your guess at the odds. That's just my opinion vs yours though. I'm sure there's a lot of people that would agree with you. Maybe your right but I think it would be something we'd live to regret. Players break down toward the end of their careers and can become pretty much a faint shadow of the player they were when they signed, I've watched it happen to many times. People are always excited when they signed then 3 years later are asking why did we do that?
  6. Im not for sacrificing the next 6 years of payroll flexibility for possibly competing the next 2. Im not of the opinion that Pujols can make us a world series contender next season and Im pretty unsure if he'd be worth what he would cost over the length of his substantially long contract.
  7. I think that's a needed dose of reality for a lot of Cubs fans. I feel that way as well, I'm very leery of giving anyone a 5-6 year deal and I think Pujols will begin to decline rapidly in the next few years. Wait, wait, wait...you're "leery of giving ANYONE 5-6-year deals?" ANYONE? You ideally want them to stick to guys they can sign for less than 5 years when it comes to FA? Then you better hope the internal player development turns into a [expletive] miracle factory. *sigh* ok not anyone I take that back, Im not a huge fan of giving aging players on thge verge of decline 5-6 year deals. Not sure why I said anyone.
  8. I think that's a needed dose of reality for a lot of Cubs fans. I feel that way as well, I'm very leery of giving anyone a 5-6 year deal and I think Pujols will begin to decline rapidly in the next few years.
  9. Anyone know much about Larry Beinfest, would he be a good candidate? The Marlins have had some success in terms of player development but honestly I don't know anything about his stance on statistical analysis. Peter Gammons threw his name out there, not that I really put a lot of stock in much of anything Peter says these days but it was a name I had not heard come up before.
  10. Dunston jr tweeted that he wont be playing until the instructs. He's in Az. but for whatever reason they arent playing him in games.
  11. The closest thing I can ever recall to someone doing anything along those lines was Mark Buerhle and his overly stated love for the Cardinals. Wasn't there some report that Jake Peavy was singing the go Cubs go song in a bar or something because he felt sure he'd be a Cub? I could have dreamed that or something but I seem to remember it.
  12. Why not they've asked Cashman in NY. There are plenty of reasons. Even if you don't want to go anywhere you can make it seem more of a possibility if you feign interest. Free agent players play teams against each other all the time in the media. Also, I'm pretty sure people have asked Pujols about being a Cub. Why wouldn't you? Its just part of being a good journalist. 99/100 times they aren't going to give you anything but there is always the chance they might and then you have a pretty interesting new story. Im pretty sure Friedman wouldnt say anything (not going to comment while under contract) or would just say he's not interested in leaving but there's always I chance he might give some indication and there's not harm asking.
  13. Well he can bring a lot of his friends with him. Thats what Im hoping for anyway. I like Gerry Hunsicker, I think he's had a great deal to do with Friedmans success.
  14. Has any Tampa press member asked Friedman about the Cubs job? I live down here and haven't really heard the question asked. Even if he said "no comment" that would be better than saying he wasn't interested. Id like to see the question asked.
  15. I've been wondering about scouts that work under potential GMs. Are they contractually obligated to stay with their current teams if their GM takes the Cubs job? For instance, if we were able to get Friedman would some of the Rays better scouts and player development people follow him? It seems like a great deal of the success of a GM lies with the team of people working under him, it could be huge to pick up some new scouting/development talent.
  16. According to his twitter Dunston Jr was on his way to that game earlier, but Im guessing is not in the lineup.
  17. I doubt we'll be able to fill the position before the end of the season simply because I tend to think we won't be able to interview any candidates during the season. In order to interview anybody, we'd have to get permission from the current team and most of the names we've heard bandied about are with organizations that will be in contention the rest of the year (Red Sox, Rays, Yankees, Braves - the White Sox being the only exception). I asked the question a page ago whether we might be able to start some interviews in-season, but even if we can I doubt contending teams would grant permission until after the season. My guess is this drags on around a couple weeks after the World Series, Ricketts will knock out the remaining interviews then and we'll have somebody in place a little before free agency begins. Damned! Its going to be an excruciatingly long wait then.
  18. I really wonder how long it will be before they they start talking about interviews (if not ownership then press via leaks). if Ricketts has known since July 22 that he's going to be hiring a new GM he's got to have a list of potential people already whittled down somewhat. When does the interview process begin? Gotta think he'd want someone in place and somewhat comfortable by the end of the season, or do you guys think this process will drag into the offseason a bit? I realize they just announced the firing but I'm really beyond ready to start hearing some names thrown out as very realistic possibilities. I'm ready to get excited about the new guy. How secretive can they keep this process? I guess if they managed to keep the firing a secret for this long, for all we know they may have already interviewed some people.
  19. Well, I'm late to this party but it's been highly entertaining reading this thread. I'm very happy to see Hendry gone, he's a good guy but it was time for a change. Hopefully we get the right guy to replace him. We are certainly entering an exciting time to be a Cubs fan. It's going to be really fun (hopefully) to see someone new taking us in a new direction (hopefully) in a new way (hopefully). Basically I'm very hopeful again and that's a good thing.
  20. I think we're gonna be safe. Oh, thank God... Weeew...
  21. Zambrano has a vesting player option for 19 mil for 2013? What are the details of the option? Is it tied to a number of wins or starts or what? I'd appreciate some details if anyone knows. If it's a simple player option he'd be stupid not to pick it up. Meaning we'd be stuck paying him for another 2 years?
  22. Did that require a question to be asked? I heard he was ranked the 3rd best highchool power prospect in this years draft. Who were the 2 better? Vogelbach's showcase videos are just amazing to watch.
  23. Can they rename that camp after a guy who didn't fall apart the year after doing it? Lol yeah I agree.
  24. Dunston jr has tweeted he reports to Mesa on Friday, don't know if he'll play in games or not right away. He's also going to get involved in camp Colvin.
  25. hopefully there is one where he has to be less fat. He was looking pretty fit in the last video I saw of him. Just want to echo this. The more recent video I've seen of him he looked great, he'll always be big but he certainly didn't look fat. He looked much more trimmed down than in previous video I had seen him in. I think he's worked hard on triming down body fat.
