  1. I'm really not crazy about giving up "stiff compensation" for any GM. I'm not so sure I'd like the idea of setting our player development back significantly to acquire Epstein or any other GM, just seems like a bad idea. I'd just rather have Cherrington or Coppolella.
  2. Why do people assume we would have to trade anything to the RedSox for Epstein? They have an option year which they could simply decide to decline on the 8th of October. Has a GM ever been traded for? I know it happens with managers but I didnt even know it was possible with non-field personel.
  3. Interesting..... I wonder how many executives he's talked to in the last 36 hours. I also dont see anything about this on the post website, and you would think if he had that kind of scoop he'd have put it there.
  4. What makes Epstein better? What mAkes him more likely to win a WS? I believe the thought process is that hes done it already and that his success has been relatively recent, which to me is poor logic. Between Beane and Epstein: I'm more impressed with Epstein's drafting. I'm more impressed with the improvement in the Sox' minor league system under Epstein. I'm more impressed with the major league talent that's emerged under Epstein. I'm more impressed with Epstein's ability to stockpile compensatory picks. Epstein has experience working in a big-market, big-media environment, Beane doesn't. Beane has made some trades that left me scratching my head, Epstein's have been more impressive. Epstein has some questionable FA signs on his resume, but Beane probably would too if he had the money to spend. For these reasons, I think the Cubs would improve more dramatically with Epstein in charge. These are all excellent reasons for wanting Epstein over Beane. Well said! He's my preference as well. I don't expect us to get either one but I'd defiantly want Epstein over Beane.
  5. according to his twitter, Rock Shoulders has a torn meniscus and will have surgery.
  6. Id love to see Epstein become the next GM or president of baseball operations for the Cubs, but I think its a little unrealistic at the moment and that he's just angling for a contract extension. Who knows though anything is possible and Theo could be looking for a new challenge. Im not sure how Id feel about Beane running the team, Im sure it would be a vast improvement but that goes without saying with any of the names that have been thrown around. Of all the names Epstein would be the dream choice, I hope somehow it happens.
  7. Sounds like Ricketts is just trying to keep his options open, and will be willing to let the new GM do what he wants. It's a strong recommendation in a sense, but if both contracts are full of options and buyouts...well, that's actually pretty smart. These details make me feel much better about Oneri's contract especially.
  8. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/6338/will-ricketts-extend-scouting-directors-deal-next Oh yeah let's cement the entire Hendry regime after we fire him but before we hire a new GM. makes perfect sense. For the record I like Wilken, but I don't get signing all these people before signing a GM.
  9. Yeah this really makes me sick to my stomach. Why wouldn't you leave a signing this important to the new GM? What has Fletia accomplished to deserve a 4 year extension? What?
  10. because apparently the Tigers were going to sign him. A shame they didn't. I hate Fletia this is also a sign to possible GMs that Ricketts is going to be a meddler down the road. He should have waited. Maybe he's already chosen a GM and they were alright with this signing, that's highly doubtful though. Ricketts needs to stay out of baseball decisions and let the GM handle stuff like this. I can't imagine any new GM would have wanted to keep Fleita.
  11. This sucks, there are 3 threads about this now, 2 here and one in transactions.
  12. Topic in transactions as well as another in cubs discussions, please merge, confusing
  13. rumblings on another message board says it's because the Tigers were looking to hire him. Well good freaking riddance I say let them hire him. I think it sends the wrong message to other potential GMs when your signing player development people to 4 year deals before you've even interviewed people for your GM position. I get the feeling Ricketts is going to become a constant meddler in baseball operations that he should not be involving himself in. let lifetime professional baseball people make the baseball decisions Ricketts! Grrrrrrrr!
  14. That's a nice way of looking at it. Really? Flourished? yeah, thank God for all the young stars the Cubs minor leagues have produced the last few years, they have really turned our team around. *pukes*
  15. Why? Why in the Hell is he signing player development people before bringing in a new GM? This seems really really stupid to me. Fleita is horrible and probably would have gotten the axe by any new GM. The guy seems dumber than a bag of rocks in most interviews I've read from him. Seems like a terrible sign of things to come. Now I'm really dreading the GM signing. If he thinks Fleita is good for the organization we are screwed.
  16. Apparently Ricketts has just signed Fleita to a 4 year deal as VP of minor league operations. Wow if that's true that's a terrible sign that things are headed in a bad direction. Why sign player development people before you hire a new GM? Fleita is terrible. Ugh.
  17. Gerry Hunsicker is not a bad idea, a lot of Friedmans success has been due to Gerry.
  18. me to lol I really dont expect these guys to say anything that would relay interest. Im just passing along things I see.
  19. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-red-soxs-epstein-doesnt-dismiss-cubs-rumors-20110831,0,6685269.story Well I'm not sure what to make of that, the headline is "Red Sox Epstein doesn't dismiss Cubs rumors" but I don't see where his comments leave much hope. Make of it what you will I guess. mlbtraderumors basically took it as a dismissal of the job.
  20. They might be on the instructionals roster? Is that a different team?
  21. Dunston Jr has tweeted he will be there. He's going home for a couple of weeks then back for instructional league.
  22. We arent exactly rolling in quality pitching prospects and if we were we probably wouldnt need Gavin.
  23. Looking at his numbers he's interesting. I think his numbers would improve with the league switch for sure. Like it has been said it would depend on what it would cost us to get him.
  24. Well this is the Cubs, we've been embracing mediocrity for quite a while.
  25. LOL it's going to big our big free agent deal of the offseason. Ladies and gentleman I give you the Cubs 1st baseman for 2012 Carlos Pena!
