  1. I thought for sure this topic would have already set off a firestorm! http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/2084783,CST-SPT-bestcub05.article
  2. 43, new stadium
  3. He was a great guy and a great Cub (at the time). I'll remember him fondly as one of my favorite lefties in that era. . .Rick Monday, Bobby Murcer and Bill Buckner (oh, and Larry Biittner). I didn't have much to look up to during that time.
  4. This is the team Dusty Baker says he's wanted. "My whole career I always yearned for a team full of kids so I could teach them how to play," says Baker, in his 15th season as a National League manager, his first with the Cincinnati Reds.
  5. The big game is over The Illini and SIU suck this year The Bulls suck The Bears are done Super Tuesday is tomorrow . . . can we get back to what's really important now? MLB, of course!! :yahoo:
  6. My question is: who the hell voted for Rod Beck, Travis Fryman and Robb Nenn (2 votes each); Shawon Dunston, Chuck Finley, David Justice, Chuck Knoblauch and Todd Stottlemyre (1 vote each)? What a friggin' waste of a vote (kinda like voting for Dennis Kucinich, but that's another story altogether). ](*,)
  7. I remember a couple of years ago when Kerry Wood was first having injury "issues." The talk was that he should consult with Roger Clemens and gain from his work ethic and training regimen. That was supposed to turn him around. :-k
  8. I remember a couple of years ago when Kerry Wood was first having injury "issues." The talk was that he should consult with Roger Clemens and gain from his work ethic and training regimen. That was supposed to turn him around. :-k
  9. David Wells :-k
  10. Billy was fired mid season and Bob Lemon was hired to take over. This will inevitably be mentioned in the sequel to "THE BRONX IS BURNING!"
  11. I love the fact that this guy wears his stirrup socks the way they should be worn and that his pant legs are not down below his shoe level!! Has his old man made that impression on him??? =D>
  12. Form today's Post-Dispatch: "But on Tuesday, sources close to the investigation told the Post-Dispatch that a small tin holding a small amount of marijuana had been recovered from the wreckage. A source with the Cardinals said the team had been made aware of the finding on Monday night." This is what I find pretty interesting in light of Tony LaRussa's implied threat to the media about swinging the fungo bat the other day. He KNEW about this when he was out there speaking to his team. He KNEW this would come out and he still tried to cover up and keep the vultures of the media away from his players. What an idiot! :pukel: pukel
  13. He also retired relatively early due to arthritis (lost to the Orioles in the '66 WS). . . has he had enough time to recover from this condition??? Does that mean there's hope that Prior/Wood can come back given enough time?
  14. I couldn't agree more with this post! A poor decision maker when it came to his pitchers . . . that was him! Although, the Cubs weren't going to beat the Giants that year ('89) and then they wouldn't have beaten LaRussa's A's either. I go back to Durocher's last year. Not much to be proud of there (with the exception of Jim Frey).
  15. Then why EVER use a backup catcher? If not in a 12-1 blow-out, when? Should we wait until Barrett strains his back or something? What happens then?
  16. We're judging a talent scout on the phrases he uses in an interview? Shouldn't we judge him on the talent he scouts and signs? I know, I know. . . what a concept. Judging someone by their performance. What a country!
  17. . . . why was Barrett playing in the late innings? The Cubs are up 12-1 and Barrett is still catching? What's up with that? D-Lee is replaced by Darryl Ward, but Henry Blanco can't come in? This was a blow out game. This was a situation when we save Barrett for the stretch drive (yes, I believe we'll be there).
  18. Didn't the Braves win the Western Division in '82 with Phil Niekro, Dale Murphy and Bob Horner?
  19. Harry and Jimmy Piersall were the funniest guys I've EVER heard. They made the White Sox enjoyable in the late 70's and early 80's. If you know anything about those White Sox teams, you'd know what I mean.
  20. I was 9 when Aaron broke the record, but I remember disliking him at the time. Not to t the point of wanting to send him hate mail or anything, but I was enamored by Babe Ruth at that age. My grandfather talked about Ruth a lot at the time. I wasn't racist, it was just that I didn't want someone to break Ruth's record. Now, since I've seen many of the interviews he's done since that time I've come to really appreciate Aaron as a complete ball player. What an awesome player he was! He did everything! He is really cool, especially handling the situation with Bonds the way he has with such class.
  21. I believe Fox has always done early games like this season, but then they tend to drop off the face of the earth until after the all-star game because they're going to do Nascar or something else between now and then. . .
  22. What would the impact on the Wrigleyville neighborhood be without Wrigley Field? Would economic development resulting from the demolition of the stadium help or hurt the surrounding neighborhood from an economic standpoint? Alternatively, what would be the impact of siting a new baseball facility in the western suburbs?
  23. According to the LA Times, the Dodgers played in some frigid temps regardless of the roof. The stadium can be covered, but still has no central heat.
  24. I hate this "tradition" in baseball of having the day off on the second friggin day of the season! We've been without baseball on TV every day since October. Baseball started full steam yesterday, but here we are on day 2 and NUTHIN! What's up with that? This is one tradition in baseball I'd like to do without! (':soap:') soap
  25. From the Trib - "They love their Cubbies in that town, and they sell out almost every game at Wrigley. We lost almost 100 games and the fans voiced their opinion. . . . It was unpleasant and sometimes it got nasty, but you knew they were yelling because they love their team. That's what made it so disappointing."- Juan Pierre. And there's a problem with that??? "Manager Dusty Baker said last summer the Cubs were reluctant to call up Felix Pie because if the young prospect struggled he might be exposed to the same kind of treatment Patterson received." That's the first time I heard that about Pie. Sound like more Dusty BS than anything else. "Several Cubs have been booed over the last decade, from Mel Rojas to Todd Hundley to LaTroy Hawkins to Patterson and Jones." Well, duh? Why shouldn't we boo bad performance??? "Lee was booed during his first month as a Cub in '04 but eventually evolved into one of their most popular players with his career year in '05." Well, there you go. Performance good? Praise. Performance bad? Boo's. Isn't this a great country? "It's one thing to boo a guy—I have no problem with that," Lee said. "But when it gets malicious … then a guy has to go home and you're a little nervous when you're getting racist comments and hate mail and phone calls. It's hard to play like that. I haven't gotten that, but I've seen a few guys on my team get it, and that's not right." I have no disagreement with that - racism is bad in any case. "In the end, the Cubs know that if they play the game right and win more than they lose, the fans will show them the love." Anyone who tells me that the "Cub fan" goes to Wrigley to drink beer and disregard the game is totally NUTS! I care about the game of baseball as much as ANY fan. I believe other Cub fans do too! I recognize good performance and salute it. I also recognize poor performance and acknowledge that as well! Be it Lee Elia, Dusty Baker, or whomever. . . I have a right to boo poor performance. If the player/manager has a problem with that. . .they should deal with it ! Its the nature of spectator sports!
