Let's say he takes 5/$125 or even 5/$135 and then is a free agent again at 32. If you're the Cubs, do you do that? I would say yes. Sure, 2012 and possibly 2013 would be a waste, but you have him for 2013-2015 when you should, theoretically, be the best team in the division if you account for front office staff and resources. And, you have him playing for another contract and don't have to worry as much about the fatness risk or diminishing athleticism for playing the field risk. That'd be the best possible 1B signing this offseason in my mind. If it looks like his body is going to actually hold up, you can always negotiate an extension as well.
