  1. It will be easier to ignore in 10 years when he's got a similar k/bb rate as a 30-year-old in aaa At which point SCS will be the only person thinking he has value.
  2. This is fantastic.
  3. He has one tool, and that tool has been below average for well over 800 PA now. This is what happened to Theriot. Put up a great K/BB and a BABIP driven OPS that's decent for your position(Theriot actually had a much better BB rate, 11% in 2008). Then pitchers realize that that you can't punish mistakes, so you start getting nothing but strikes, the BABIP dips, and the offensive value plummets. In Torreyes' case it's more like "pitchers at higher levels are good enough to pump strikes" rather than just figuring out that you have great contact ability but no power, but the end result is the same. This. That K/BB ratio isn't worth crap if there isn't anything else worthwhile going on.
  4. This will eventually force out Thibs and probably cause more doubt in Roses head. I'm not sure Forman has a long term plan. It's interesting to sit back and watch other GMs maneuver. Shouldn't you still be panicking about the Blackhawks getting eliminated? HARRRRRR HAR HAR!!!!! 2/10 You rate your own posts?
  5. D'oh. I guess I should say if you know you're likely to be signing guys that would cost you that pick. You can't sign a pick-tied free agent if you've already forfeited your pick, iirc. There's no way that is the case.
  6. From BA: So what's to stop teams that are actually good (for which those top picks are much less valuable) from overslotting the hell out of their drafts? Can you get enough upper echelon talent in the rest of the draft to justify losing those picks if you're willing to spend the money? Surrendering two first rounders is extremely crippling, even if you pick late. That said, a team is going to push past the limits in an extremely draft (a la 05 or 11) or with a generational talent who won't sign cheap (Harper, Stras, Griffey, A-Rod). Another question just occurred to me. What is the penalty for those teams if they already surrendered their first rounder by signing a free agent requiring compensation? Gotta figure it's either the next year's first rounder or their next highest pick that year. If I had to guess, I'd say it's the latter.
  7. Brett with a pretty interesting theory on why the Cubs have behaved like they have this IFA spending period: http://www.bleachernation.com/2013/07/04/loopholing-an-explanation-for-the-cubs-international-spending-approach/
  8. I wonder if the players are confused.
  9. I wonder how much of an effect the new facility in the DR had on influencing Jimenez's decision.
  10. That's like 2 16 year old CTs Weight wise, that's probably a lot closer to truth than I'd like.
  11. Also, how the hell does a 16 y/o get to be 6'4 and 200 lbs? That blows my mind.
  12. Hahahaha why are you engaging him. He just (sadly) thinks he's funny/smart/whatever when he jokes about the window being continually pushed back.
  13. I'd throw up if it was for that Dodgers package.
  14. Not sure how Camp has been a complete "whiff", he did put up a 1.14 ERA+ in 80 appearances last year on a $550k salary. Scott Baker's tenure with the Cubs is far from a "whiff", I would assume theres a decent chance he will be back with the club next year. Manny Corpas...really!?!? And as noted by many, Volstad for Zambrano was trash for trash. It should by no means be considered a "whiff". Scott Baker is a whiff. Nothing wrong with calling that one early. It was a gamble that played out poorly. But I also won't hold it that strongly against them. That was about as much a roll of the dice as any baseball transaction can be.
  15. What? You missed all that? Don't want to derail this thread. Was it earlier in this thread or something? I didn't plan on reading all of this mess.
  16. Also, how does Fujikawa count as a "whiff?" He got taken down by unforeseeable injuries before he could put up a sample size worth judging.
  17. Looks like the Cubs and Rangers are taking the two opposite paths to spending a lot of money this year.
  18. Theo was in the AL East as recently as 2011, while the other two big guys had been in the NL West for a long time. Although I don't think there's any extra familiarity with being in the same division anyway. You don't think there's any extra familiarity with guys on teams you play 17-19 times every year over a team in the other league? That's flat out ridiculous. Hahahaha good luck with that gooney. Also, Hoyer was with the Sox until the end of 2009. BP has Arrietta as the #4 prospect in the O's system heading into that year. I'm sure Hoyer had no familiarity with him whatsoever.
  19. But that team option is huge. I'd rather have the return from the Campana trade than what we got for Feldman. Maybe Arrieta is another of those buy low SPs our FO is so good at finding. I thought we were all pretty confident in their ability to find those guys. I certainly am. Plus, this front office is going to especially familiar with these guys thanks to the AL East connection.
  20. I wouldn't go that far, but I also had soured on the guy quite a bit. Doubt he'd make even make my top 20. It's funny seeing people say he's too much for IFA money when there's no concept of what the actual market is like (on our end, at least).
  21. The Feldman return is the thing I'm least happy about. Given the choice between Torreyes and 600k in IFA money(plus several mil saved on Marmol's deal), I'm pretty ambivalent. If that money is put towards someone who they believe in(and obviously has a greater ceiling than Torreyes) and it seems like it is, then that's an okay deal for me, if a bit odd. I think Torreyes' value is a bit distorted here. He didn't make BA's Top 30 before the season. He has no defensive, positional, power, or speed value. He had one thing, a great hit tool, and that has abandoned him at higher levels. He's closer to MiLB roster fill than he is to being an MLB starter. Pundits seem to be neutral to positive on the Cubs side of the trade, which is weird, because I'm not happy with it either. Maybe we just expected too much out of Feldman. I think we all did. Looking at the guy objectively, he's not that valuable of a piece.
