  1. Surely, Kerry has too much pride to accept arby when a multi-year offer is on the table.
  2. 5 good pitchers is great for the regular season. 1 great pitcher, 3 good ones, and a cheapy are better for the post season
  3. I played HS ball with Kevin, nice guy, great athlete.
  4. I'm not going to speak to a team's collective mindset as I think that is hard to gauge (Although DeRosa's error looked like a lot like nerves to me). As far as a glimmer of hope here it is: both Harden and Lilly are flyball pitchers and both can be extremely effective in large parks. If the cubs can get the bats going I see a good chance at a couple of Ws in LA. I wouldn't expect more than 3 runs from the Dodgers in either game. From the looks of Z and Dempster in the first two games I'd prefer Z in a game 5.
  5. I don't know if I agree that there are more cub fans than Yankees or Red Sox but I certainly don't disagree. West of the Mississippi there seem to be many more cub fans than anything else. I live in Denver and there are a ton of cubs fans here - most of whom have Chicago roots. I grew up in Evanston BTW.
  6. http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/1180386,wrig092408.article Daley is a crook
  7. It unfortunate that he's been pretty much cold every post-season that he's played in with his .598 OPS over 160 ABs You'd think he'd maybe get hot one of those Octobers
  8. I guess I should have said good pitchers and mediocre pitchers...does that make any differnce for ya?
  9. The thing that concerns me the most (assuming we make the playoffs) is Soriano. Soriano seems to me to be a guy that mashes mediocre pitching and gets shut down by good pitching. I don't have any numbers to back this up - because I'm lazy But considering the difference in the team's winning percentage with and without Soriano this is a real concern.
  10. I know some of you may disagree with me but I think Marmol is a better pitcher than Howry
  11. Earl Weaver used to do this with his DH spot - they called it the phantom DH. He'd have Steve Stone or Flannagan or some pitcher in the starting line-up as the DH and then pinch-hit for them when their spot came up. MLB changed the rules because of this. As far as I know, this rule only applies to the DH.
  12. I just don't think the Sox would let him slip to the Rays. I also don't think if he did slip to the Rays they would trade for him. Do the Rays even make trades that aren't totally lopsided in their favor?
  13. Probably not the cubs but who knows... http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8446822?MSNHPHMA
  14. I'm certain this will never happen but wouldn't Leiber be a good replacement for Howry. Leibs can still be effective vs. right-handers and you know he'll throw strikes. He could be a right handed loogy (is that a roogy?)
  15. I'm sure that would make him much easier to sign in the off-season.
  16. He really reminds me of Farnsworth right now except with a better slider and a slower fastball. Farnsy could'nt get his fastball over for strikes so he'd throw the slider
  17. This may be a blessing. I know 2003 was a long time ago but if you recall Z was pretty tough that year but seemed to run out of gas at the end. I think that if they DL'd him or he was out for a month he may come back and be more effective than if he'd never been injured at all. My personal feeling is that this will be the case and the cubs will still be in first place when he returns.

  19. I dont' see why those two need to be split up to break up the lefties - Roberts wouldn't bat left handed against a lefty pitcher. There are two schools of thought regarding batting a left handed hitter #2 in the line-up: 1: If that player is a pull hitter he has a greater chance of getting a hit because it is more likely to have the 1st baseman on the bag. The 1 hitter (should be) on base at least 35% of the time, and since he'd be a threat to steal he'd be held on. This would open up a hole on the right side of the diamond. 2: A late pitching change at the two spot would most likely be to a left handed pitcher greatly reducing the runner on first's ability to steal. After reading this board for years (and posting maybe 4 or 5 times) I know how most of you feel about steals. Having said that, I'd prefer a lefty in that spot (especially with righties at 3 and 4)with everything being equal. Obviously I'd take a righty with a .850 OPS over a lefty with a .750 OPS in the 2 spot.
