Not to derail the topic of the thread - the ESPN and general national coverage of Joba is annoying as all get out - but is there a leverage weighted measure of innings pitched out there somewhere?

ugh, i hate this line of reasoning. it's innings that matter, not days. Yes and no. Leverage of innings is a big factor, given that runs scored don't carry across between games. In any case, I generally agree that innings of good pitching matter more, but it is not an absolute.

Ehhh, not so much. One of the guys just said "if we get a hit here, we can get another point." I thought he was making a joke about his earlier point where he talked about getting "first run innings". Let me clarify, the play-by-play guy is solid. Can't say much for the color commentary.

Despite how this game is going so far, watching the game on MLB.tv, I am kind of a fan of the Padres announcers.

Fred and erik have 7 this year. 2007 brought us UMFan with 8 and Davhern, Southpaw and Soccer10k with 7 In 2006, the leader was apparently me...with 4. Though we obviously quit on the season. :oops: Looks like the most in 2005 was 5 (Roast, CT, Tree and bukie). 2004 was the year of Bhogg the Game Thread Pimp. I think Bhogg's clutch performance at the end of last season following the ugly sweep in Florida should be counted as at least 5 wins.

just as impressive as 3 strikeouts on 10 pitches is that they were all looking. From my memory, the last cub pitcher with a performance as dominating as that was ten years ago this month. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN200409110.shtml Check out the top of the 9th and look at the pitch totals for each at-bat. Yeah, that was the game where Lee's bases clearing double was hailed as irony/revenge for the previous year. That worked out well for us...

I would have given anything to be there. I immediately got goose bumps (amidst running wild up and down the stairs). Does anyone know if any posters were there? It was incredible. Another way of putting it: The Cubs are dead last in the Fecal League standings. :DFriggin losers. Ah, I had forgotten about the fecal league standings. While it was fun to see them plummet in those standings last year over the course of the summer, I don't miss them. -

The 1985 Cubs were 35-19 at this point and finished 77-84. The 1969 Cubs were 37-17 at this point and finished 92-70. The 1999 Cubs were 32-23 and finished 67-95 Didn't the 1999 Cubs manage to lose something like 40 of their next 50 games after that start? That was absurd. (actually, I just checked - they had a 24-64 stretch following that start. Ouch!) -
Makes me really appreciate how deep their lineup is when healthy. That 3-4-5 destroys any of the forfeit lineups Dusty used to throw out there, especially in 06.

Agreed, but Burnett and Harden are really the only ones who fit that bill. And based on the way the A's are going, it doesnt look like Harden will be available. Burnett may be the only option unless Hill steps up again (which I see as a more likely outcome). Unfortunately, I think the Cubs' brass may see Dempster as that guy based on his early season success, and that is what worries me the most.
