  1. How so, you willing to say that Oswalt's performance had nothing to do with his ability to pitch rather the Cards' inability to hit? Failure to score runs is a credit to the pitcher. I'm saying its both. no matter how good the pitcher, the game still consists of a pitched ball and the batters ability to hit it. I don't disagree that the pitcher is by far the most important player on the field, he just isn't 90 percent of the game all by himself. that would imply that a game could as readily be decided to establishing a system of charting pitches and awarding runs based on the performance of those pitches. When you get to the playoffs, the ability of a team to score runs off a good pitcher is just as important as the ability of the pitcher to prevent the runs.
  2. well, the old format was 12 and 18 and I never found that dull (although the Rockies home schedule always seems dull to me so maybe I do now). I don't see baseball going to shorter playoffs so would that be top four from each league make it? I would prefer to see top three and the winners get a bye from a competition standpoint but that would be one less full round. I also think the 5 games series should be abolished - at least for division winners.
  3. both would be ok with me. at the least they should go to five team divisions in each league. and yes, it does work if you don't insist on all interleague being at the same time and trying to create intercity rivalries.
  4. or his inability to tell a ball from a strike?
  5. So, you go with a division of New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington? I guess the two new teams go to the AL (though not necessarily). I really like the concept of regional divisions. Boston NYY New Jersey Baltimore CHW Detroit Cleveland Toronto NYM Philadelphia Pittsburgh Washington Atlanta Florida Houston Tampa Bay CHC St. Louis Milwaukee Cincinnati CHW Minnesota Detroit Cleveland etc etc
  6. Why do you say that?
  7. I posted this in baseball discussions as well but was interested in what people here thought. Baseball needs two more teams so we can go to eight divisions of four teams each. Thus, you play one inter-league division one series each for 12 games, the 12 other teams in your league but not your division 9 times, and the teams in your division 18 times. no wildcards - each division winner gets in the playoffs. Possible expansion possibilities: Portland Las Vegas San Antonio/Austin Charlotte Memphis Indianapolis ???

  9. failure to score runs is still hitting.
  10. How would a Lofton/Hairston platoon leading off and playing CF, with Lugo batting 2nd and playing SS look if Hendry could simultaneously bring in a Giles, Abreu, Sheffield, Dunn or Burrell to play corner OF? These moves would leave plenty of money to go after Burnett or Millwood. There are so many ways of thinking about this. sounds like the kind of out of the box thinking that wins world series. unfortunately I don't think hendry thinks that way.
  11. I thought those were still coming up but I could be wrong. With our two biggest division rivals playing for the pennant for the second straight year, our cross-city rivals playing for the world series, and our nearest division rival having overtaken us, you would think the cubs would have some motivation to improve. I am just afraid they don't have the evaluation skills they need and will be content to blame this and last year's failures on injuries.
  12. I'm not mad that they didn't get mazzone, just that they re-upped an absolutely worhtless pitching coach. this team desperately needs someone to manage the pitching staff.
  13. depends on what season tickets are available. the A's did this in 2000 but you could buy 20 game season ticket packages to qualify. the bad part was they made you buy tickets for every possible playoff game.
  14. This coaching staff does not impress me. Bringing them all back was not a good move at any point in time.
  15. I really don't care if he does it quickly or slowly.
  16. this has to stop. I think I was hoping this series would never end so the world series from hell would never start. this may be worse than NY versus NY.
  17. wait wait, I just heard it - houston has the best fans in baseball. and in the southwest too although houston isn't remotely in the southwest.
  18. and build yourself a major league ballpark.
  19. How does it feel to go to your first world series as a non-contributor Jeff?
  20. good grief, what are the announcers babbling about?
  21. who are the fans cheering for? Sounds like a mix of white sox and astros.
  22. don't have any expectations then you won't be disappointed.
  23. hey, two worthless pitching coaches is better than one good one, right?
  24. garner says game 5 was no big deal, he won't change anything. I like it.
