  1. most people in Argentina don't have a lot else to celebrate
  2. thanks for posting this. I was listening to the american idiots and missed this.
  3. trying to . . . . oh wait. :) :) :)
  4. Soccer refs need to stop tolerating players getting in their face. Captain only or you get carded. It's that simple. I can't think of any other sport that allows so much ref abuse.
  5. not lost in there is that apparently this was not why he wasn't playing but because he wasn't playing.
  6. I guess I should have opened the tweet. but I don't do twitter so horsefeathers it.
  7. How is it a middle finger to Gregg?
  8. Generally I agree with your sentiment but I think you have to be pretty naive to think anything is "off the record." At best, Berhalter demonstrated poor communication with a player. That said, he could have thrown him under the bus a long time ago. I agree that Berhalter counting on the story he tells about the world cup at a leadership summit *while the world cup is still going on* to be off the record is probably naive, even if it getting published in a newsletter was an avoidable mistake by a third party. As for player communication, it seems like he did right by Gio. By all accounts he was transparent with him about the problem and clearly didn't hold a grudge and used him as his effort improved. He could've easily pinned Gio's WC role on the very real issue to the press, but instead used the technically true vague answers about injury and game state to shield him from that scrutiny and keep the focus on Gregg. yea, that's I was saying. The poor communication part to me reflects the apparent amount of time it took to address the lack of effort.

  10. sing it with me "You're Going Home!"
  11. incredible goal. Must have surprised Pickford because that should be saved from that distance. Interesting tactically to see the positions Griezmann takes up - high in the half space - that's where I would like to see McKennie as opposed to deeper and on the touchline
  12. seems like more insult in the moment than nickname but . . .
  13. that pass is all you need to watch to end any argument about who is the better player
  14. They got their defensive tactics from the US against Portugal in 2014. hahaha - I remember that! I was like, if you're going to cover one player on the other team . . .
  15. they were trying to possess the ball in the other half and their right back was up high (he is very attacking minded. They don't absorb pressure
  16. fatigue is taking its toll
  17. also Virgil
  18. see Italy 1982 I was thinking Portugal in Euro 2016. Drew all 3 group games, won 2 knockout games in extra time and a third in penalties. So they only won 1 of 7 games in 90 minutes. I believe after 1982 was when they increased wins to 3 points, literally re-defining! It's an issue with soccer in general but also keeps more teams competitive.
  19. see Italy 1982
  20. sigh, pragmatism wins. At least we get to keep watching the genius that is Luka Modric - most underrated player of all time (yea, I know he won Ballon D'Or)
  21. omg, live by the sword, die by the sword
  22. NEYMAR!!
  23. I think stability at coach is a positive. It kind of depends if you believe Berhalter will build off this team or be content with the same approach. The lack of coherent attacking movement was disturbing to me. Is this the result of lack of talent or lack of coaching? To TT's point (and what I said earlier), the team played with a 6 and two 8s - very defensive. This leaves the 9 to have to drop deep to fill in the hole where the 10 should be but then you are attacking 2v4. VVD was free to defend Pulisic 40 yards from goal because there was no 9 threat whatsoever. Either you need midfield rotation or you need an actual 10. You can get out of the group stage and maybe to a quarterfinal with this approach, but you can't get much further. Maybe with this team, this was the limit, but I think we all hope for more so the question is, can Berhalter take the team further?
  24. needed to rest Ramos for the next match
  25. well, duh. :) What a finish by Ramos. Joao Felix has been amazing in this game - with Bruno, that midfield is so good.
