  1. can someone fill me in...Mateo only threw 2 innings..why was he pulled injury not effective?
  2. Thierot needs to start everyday and Bynum needs to ride the bench. I think we can all agree on this.
  3. Beltre signed that contract immediately after this career season....... AVG .334 OBP .388 SLG .629 OPS 1.017 HR 48 His career year came at the right moment for him. His other 8 seasons don't resemble those numbers. Aramis has not put up those numbers. Beltre was given his contract solely on that season. No one took into account what he had done previously. Beltre juiced up and got his contract. He sucks without the roids.
  4. I didn't think that was the point of this thread. I thought it was to lay out what you would like to see happen. Oh, well I was just pointing out that signing players like Zito and Soriano is highly unlikely I agree. So instead of signing some garabage like Jose Guillen, I would rather them just give the job to Murton
  5. can we give the Dodgers Byum too? He is so fast, its like he is driving in runs with his legs.
  6. Guys...you have to ask this.....yeah they can spend some $$$ and try to get back to respectablity. Maybe a big bat in LF, 1-2 new starters, and a new manger might get this team back to .500. But more than likely Hendry will be unable to sign any of these guys Lee/Soriono/Schimdt/Zito...we will get 2nd 3rd tier guys like a Jose Guillen, a Ted Lilly and the beat goes on. What would give you joy in 07. For me its seeing Pie patrolling center. EPatt trying to do what his brother couldn't in Chicago Fundemantel baseball...Giriardi teaching, chewing arse, when needed. Guys overachieving. Low expectations that are exceeded. think about it.
  7. Lets blow this thing up. My 2007 lineup 2B Eric Patterson LF Matt Murton 1B Derrek Lee 3B Aramis Ramirez CF Felix Pie C Michael Barret RF Angel Pagan SS Izturis Zambrano veteran FA pitcher so not all our young arms fall apart Rich HIll Sean Marshall Mateo/Marmol/Gallager/Veal Bullpen Eyre Howry whoever doesn't suck And they will be managed by staff SGT. Girardi http://www.sportsnet.ca/images/mlb/fla/girardi_vert.jpg TEN HUT...I WANT YOU..TO BE A CHICAGO CUB.
  8. Drink up. 2007 might not be much better than 06.
  9. but don't forget...its like he is driving runs in with his glove. Last week I know he killed that rally with the double play...but don't forget that slick play he made up the middle of the field with no one on and 2 outs...thats like driving 1/2 run right there in itself.
  10. Cause he's a lefty that can come off the bench and hit a home run. And playoff teams want that. His power numbers are pretty bad this season. Nice guy, but he shouldn't be in the majors anymore IMO.
  11. Why would anyone want John Maybe? He brings no value to a club. You are better off taking a young player and grooming him at the utility role IMO. When D. Lee went down Murton should have begun taking reps at 1B and Restovich should have been called up from AAA.
  12. Now you're changing your estimates. This is the problem. When you arbitrarily assign value to things you are almost certain to value them incorrectly. This is how the Cubs build a team. They haphazardly put together a team with random and arbitrary stats (Jones hit .300 once, so-and-so hit great with RISP, Izturis led the league in hits for two months, etc), and the end result is a mess of a team with no direction. As a fan, it really doesn't matter how you value players. You can choose to value whomever or whatever you want. But a GM, and any other person concerned with how a team is put together, has to use tangible, measurable, objective means to value the players they are considering for the roster. Are you accusing me of being a Hendry? Those are some fighiting words!
  13. Ramirez was crap before Lee went down. And his numbers were actually quite good, overall, during the Lee-less time. It doesn't make much sense to blame his poor at-bats on lack of production, when he was just as bad with Lee in there, and actually ended up improving with Lee gone. I meant Ramirez's performance during Lee's DL's stint 1. After Lee went back on the DL a 2nd time Aram was great. Yeah, so that pokes a hole in your theory about protection. If he was bad without protection and good without protection, you can't really say protection had anything to do with it. You can't pick and choose time periods and ignore those that conflict with your theories, if you want to convince anybody. I really don't care if I convince anybody. To me a healthy D. Lee gives this team 8 extra wins...4 in the VORP(stats deparment) and 4 via intangibles. Thats just my opinion. Maybe some players dont' go into slumps...confindence is up...etc..etc..Its just my opinion..I do respect stats but I also think you have to acknlowdege the non measurable factors.
  14. Yes...I'm sure they can. I find it comical at this point.

  16. There has been work that shows that "protection" is largely a myth. It's not an intangible. It can be measured. . How does that work? How is it measured? I'm guessing that with Lee Ramirez doesn't crap the bed in April in May. Granted he is a slow starter..but my guess he puts up at least respectable #'s. Of course I could be wrong..I just don't see how this could be measured.
  17. If you are trying to measure wins via VORP it ignores intanibles that a player brings. Ignoring D. Lee's offensive numbers Other players in the lineup would have seen better pitches Lee's defense would have masked Walkers shortcomings at 2B. His leadership would have probably broken up some of those long losing streaks. So IMO...I'll give a VORP 5 and add 3 games for intanglibles. I'd say the Cubs have 8 more wins with a healhty Lee.
  18. Phil Rodgers is the John Kerry of sportswriters.
  19. The Cardinals had not shot at Zito even before this Oswalt dea.
  20. Guess you and I see it differently then. I was enjoying the exchange of background info and discussion about career paths to front offices for non-athletes. As I said, there are plenty of our places for me to vent my frustration over his performance. Wow..agree to disagree I guess. I think the poster was trying to point out how insane it is that someone who tought mathematics cannot understand the importance of OBP in the game of baseball.
  21. Who could forget Sosa's 20HR's in June Or when McGuire broke Maris' record and was embraced on the field by Sosa. All tainted unfortunatly by the steroid questions. They say when JFK was assasinated American lost it's innoncence. After 1998 baseball lost it's innoncense IMO
  22. really? I got a different take reading the first post
  23. What does that have to do with this thread? I thought this thread discussing Jim Hendry? Yeah, its discussing his professional background, with anectdotes from people who have met him, been coached by him, read about him, etc. Its not meant to be a flame fest, I don't think. "Flame Fest" are you serious? I simply stated that I wish he would apologize to us as Cub fans and until then I cannot respect him. I did not flame. I did not use insults I simply stated my opinion.
  24. What does that have to do with this thread? I thought this thread discussing Jim Hendry?
  25. Until Hendry comes out and offers an apology to Cubs fans...I will continue to have 0 respect for the man.
