  1. Crawford was suspended for the rest of the season and the playoffs today: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2840587
  2. Murton in CF? Yeah, there's a reason-he would be a disaster defensively in CF right now. that's right soriano's defensive skills will be missed. At least Murton plays the outfield. Soriano's defensive skills would be missed if Murton was stuck out there. You can't stick a guy who has played LF his entire career and doesn't have unbelievable range at that position (average to above average) into CF cold and expect them to cover it. If Murton trained all winter to play CF, he maybe could play it at a below average to average level, but sticking him out there in the middle of the season with no work there would be awful.
  3. I doubt that DeRosa is even being considered at SS very much except for an emergency situation-I think he can play it, but with 2 SS's already on the roster I think Lou wants to split the innings mostly between them before shifting the starter for another position over to cover it. i meant derosa at 2nd and theriot at ss I haven't seen any indications that they think Theriot can play SS either. If they did, don't you think he would have gotten in some part of a game there already? I mean he's had time in LF, RF, 2B, and 3B-but no SS (and there have been several chances to get him in there easily, if it be a start or a double switch).
  4. Hm, no chance at 4 or 5...that's sort of odd. I'll gladly take a 15 percent chance at a top 3 pick though :) That's because they only draw for the first 3 picks, and then sort the rest by record. So the Bulls could win one of the first 3 picks, but since the Knicks only have the 6th worst record there would be no way after the first 3 picks were drawn that the Knicks would have the 1st or 2nd worst record left, which would be the 4th and 5th picks.

  6. I think you are right. definitely. he'd have to hit the cover off the ball to bump floyd/jones/soriano/murton out of the OF rotation Hendry may really be trying to trade Jones too. He certainly showed some outfield versatility yesterday, although this is the second year in a row he's started slow offensively. I suspected something was up with the outfield flop last night. Soriano getting hurt may have just sped up the process. I think Murton is getting used in right to show he can play it so Jones can be traded and Pie will get the CF or RF spot and Murton will be able to back up RF. That makes sense. Pie would get RF, and Murton/Pie/Floyd would split the at-bats between the two corner positions, with Murton the one who flipped between LF and RF depending on the day.
  7. I'm kind of surprised that Izturis is not in the lineup today. I'm just fine with Cedeno playing a day or two, but today is the one day where Izturis had good numbers against the opposing pitcher (Izturis is 6/14 against Maddux with 1 2B and 1 BB, a .429/.467/.500 line). I would have much rather seen Cedeno play yesterday or tomorrow than today. With our worst starter going today I wish we would go with Floyd in LF and Barrett catching. I know he caught the night game last night but let Blanco catch Zambrano tomorrow. I could go either way with Izturis or Cedeno. I wish Barrett was in as well. My post right after yours explained why Floyd is not in, and also I can hopefully cling to the hope that Blanco does have 4 hits and 1 HR against Maddux in 12 AB's-maybe he can get 1 hit today. Lee has also struggled mightily against Maddux in his 48 tries, and Aramis in his 14 tries. I'm more encouraged that the both of them can break out of that though-Aramis doesn't have enough of a sample against Maddux, and Lee is better and Maddux worse than the last time the two faced each other.
  8. One thing I am not shocked about today is Floyd not being in against Maddux. Those two have had quite a few at-bats against each other-78 in fact! Floyd has hit him to a .231/.268/.397 line-you might as well throw in a guy like Jacque Jones who hasn't had many at-bats against Maddux and see what he can do then take anywhere near that line that Floyd has had over plenty of at-bats.
  9. 12 pitchers is a luxury and Ohman has been the weak link. If he pitches well in Iowa he'll be back. I like that Lou wants to play the people who produce. If Ohman goes down to Iowa, he'll never come back-because he will be on another team. I think the team would have to send down somebody else-no use in exposing Ohman this early. Guzman could go down, get a start in the minor leagues, and be ready to replace Miller if needed for example.
  10. I'm kind of surprised that Izturis is not in the lineup today. 11. Murton in CF? Yeah, there's a reason-he would be a disaster defensively in CF right now.
  12. I'd be surprised if Soriano moved to LF this year. They'd basically be shutting off Floyd from ever starting the rest of the year, and I don't think the team would be ready to do that. Floyd has played 79 games in RF before. Not since 2002 though. Exactly-with the way he plays LF, I don't think anybody wants to see him out in RF at this stage in his career. Pie will likely go down this time when Soriano comes up, and if Jones does get traded sometime this summer, Soriano/Pie will play some combination of center and right.
  13. The way Piniella presented it to Soriano was as an option, not a demand. It wasn't like he said "You're going to LF." and Soriano told him to stick it. It was "Will moving to LF help your hitting with not having so much to worry about?" and he said he was fine, that CF wasn't a distraction. I don't think this is an issue. What happens when Soriano gets back and Pie stays on board though? I wonder is Pie will be our starting CF and if so will Sori be in RF or LF? With Murton playing RF yesterday, I'd expect Soriano to move back to LF. Also, he's played a year there, so he's comfortable in LF. I doubt they'd move him to RF. I'd be surprised if Soriano moved to LF this year. They'd basically be shutting off Floyd from ever starting the rest of the year, and I don't think the team would be ready to do that.
  14. Here is what I propose with Miller: you give him the start today and the start on Sunday. Unless he significantly improves (say-keep his ERA under 5 for just the next two starts combined, with good stuff as well) then Guzman is in. The Cubs have an off day next Thursday, so the 5th starter spot can be skipped one more time. Guzman would then make his debut May 1st at the Pirates. This does a couple of things-one, it allows Guzman 10 days to get lengthened out for a start-also, it allows the Cubs to keep Miller for a couple more weeks to make sure there's no injury to another starting pitcher, but only giving him 1 more start beyond today in the process. If there hasn't been an injury, Miller gets released or traded before that May 1st date, again as long as he hasn't significantly improved in those 2 starts.
  15. Both the radio guys said it was a clear trap. Soriano strained his hamstring-day to day.
  16. 1 actually, but your point is well taken.
  17. In addition to what a couple people have said, I think it is likely that Blanco starts tomorrow-day game after a night game, Barrett has caught 4 days in a row, and Blanco has been fine against Maddux (in only 12 AB's). This seems like the day that Blanco will start, and so Lou wouldn't ask him to get on the gear tonight and catch the last 3 innings.
  18. This is hilariious. Who has complained about DeRosa on this board? Anyone? Ever? Seriously? The DeRosa signing wasn't loved by many on this board. Not to mention after his bad week this week, there were at least a few people advocating benching him for the season-not as many as those who wanted to bench Cesar or Floyd, but they were out there. Of course, that is sort of the point of the board :D
  19. In the summer that is long gone. That's 2 in 2 days then for him-Jacque hit one in the 1st inning yesterday that would have been long gone in the summer.
  20. It wasn't on Barrett-the base was stolen without a pitch even being thrown.
  21. I'm not surprised by that-Bymum had 4 HR, 5 3B, and 5 2B in just 136 AB's last year. Power was the one thing he did pretty well.
  22. 50-50 isn't a good percentage. Well, let's say it another way. Without using the hit and run at all in that inning, the Cubs get 1 run instead of 2. Without using the hit and run, the Theriot grounder could have been a DP and the Cubs wouldn't have scored any runs. Well, I calculated 1 because Lee still got a single, advanced on a WP, and then scored on Murton's single before Barrett would have made the 3rd out in the inning. And Sully, admittedly I can't tell you for sure-I'm listening as well :D I was just trusting Pat when he said it would have been a DP instead of saying that it just could have been one.
  23. 50-50 isn't a good percentage. Well, let's say it another way. Without using the hit and run at all in that inning, the Cubs get 1 run instead of 2.
  24. A hit and run kept us out of a DP early in the inning, and then had us hit into a DP the end of the inning-it evened out.
  25. Murton in RF and Jones in LF? Are you sure that's not flip-flopped, or that Floyd isn't in place of Jones? I find it odd that Lou put Murton in the 4 hole, considering the main reason he's been out most of the season was due to a lack of power. And why is Barrett given middle of the order status? He's been as bad as Izturis this year. Yeah, we're discussing the flip-flop in the game thread as well. Our guess is that while Murton learns right it makes sense to try to have the best OF defender play the other corner so Soriano can help Murton out a little bit. As far as power, that has been our reason why Floyd is playing, but it never was Lou's reason. As far as Barrett, the only player who really has been better than him who is behind him is DeRosa, and he is 1 for his last 12, while Barrett is 5/17 with 4 BB's this past week.
