Not the losses-just this loss. The offense Sunday and the offense yesterday were two completely different things. Between the 6th and the 9th, the Cubs offense hit 5 hard hit low line drives-1 directly at the first baseman, 2 directly at the shortstop, and 2 hit directly at the 3rd baseman. In extra innings, the Cubs hit 4 balls that would have been home runs on any average day-none of them left the park. Could they have won the game even with all that bad luck? Yes-but yesterday, the Cubs were pretty unlucky-while Sunday had a ball or two that were unlucky, but most of it was simply a horrible offensive performance. Is that luck, or is that the reason those people play those positions -- because that's where most of the balls are hit? The people play those spots so that they can cover the available ground from right to left, not necessarily because that's exactly where the most balls are hit-of course I think you know that :D
So, I just saw the Sportscenter highlights of the game. They didn't refer to Pie by the pronunciation that seems obvious, but neither did they do it the correct way. Instead, it was two syllables-the first syllable was Pie, and then they added the syllable that is actually at the end of his name, the a sound. so it's Pie-a. It sounds kind of ridiculous, and he said it at least 4 times during the highlights.
Well, he'll get a chance on Sunday to see what he can do on 4 days rest. The Cubs cannot afford to give him consistent starts after that if he doesn't pitch well on Sunday.

You know how everybody was talking about how if there was no wind today or it was warmer that the Cubs would have hit a few home runs. Well, let me just say that things work both ways. If the conditions are different, Miller's line looks way worse. And like you said, those types of conditions will happen in the summer so things can only get worse. Let me preface this by saying that I hope Sunday is Miller's last start. With that said, I don't think he would have been way worse. The balls that were hit that would have been home runs against him (Gonzalez, Cameron) at least one of them and possibly both of them scored anyway. He really didn't allow any moderate to deep fly ball outs-they were either line drive hits or shallow pop outs.
This is why Ohman has value: Ohman against LHB in 2005:.173/.269/.321 2006: .158/.277/.257 BTW, here are his numbers against LHP in 2007-.200/.429/.200 He got brought in one time in the right situation this year, and he failed that time. The other times, he hasn't been brought in the situation he's supposed to be for-he is absolutely great against LHB, and LHB only.
I doubt that Hendry would want a lot for Jones. He hasn't been producing here at the start of the year, and just getting out of that contract would be worth it. Plus that would open up an outfield spot since we seem to have a glut of outfielders. It's kind of weird though...Hendry couldn't find a taker in the offseason, but now after a cold start for Jones, there's interest? Like I was saying in another thread, the fact that Jones didn't get traded doesn't mean there wasn't interest in him over the offseason. The hangup seemed to be more that the Cubs could not find the CF they wanted to replace him, and they weren't willing to trade Jones until that CF was ready to be acquired. Once Soriano said he was willing to play CF, that CF was no longer needed, and the club stopped trying to trade Jones.
Ok, some quick thoughts: Guzman could not have helped us today. He threw 2 innings yesterday, and do you really want to put that much stress on his arm by having him go out again? I'm glad that he wasn't here to get in this game-we are going to need his arm to be healthy so he can be the 5th starter. Ohman is the LOOGY. He shouldn't face right-handed hitters. When you're forced to put in your LOOGY for a full inning because all your other guys have been used, you should expect to lose-even then, the loss is not on Ohman because of the terrible outfield defense in his inning. The loss is on 2 things today: 1) The offense. Theriot, Lee, and Ramirez were the only people that were on base twice today, and in a game where home runs are almost impossible, that hurts. The 5-7 spots were our biggest undoing today-besides Ward's double in the 14th, those 3 spots were a combined 1-16 with 1 BB (Murton 0-5, Jones 1-6, Cedeno 0-5 with 1 BB). When the 2-3-4 hitters did get on their couple times, these 3 hitters could not get the job done today. 2) The (corner) outfield defense. Murton's really bad play led to at least 1 of the runs in the 1st. Theriot and Jones combined for the run in the 14th. That's half the runs the Padres scored right there.
Yeah, from what I remember, he spent the majority of the year at Iowa. He spent a solid 3 months in AAA. He didn't get called up until mid to late July IIRC. Yup-last game on April 14th last year-went down, came up and got shelled in one outing on May 22nd, and then went down and came up and had his first outing on July 23rd when he stayed.
Pretty solid. Offensively, he pulled an inside pitch to the second baseman, lifted an easy fly to left, and hit a ball into the gap into left-center for a double. Defensively, he's looked pretty smooth-nothing to complain about.
Cotts on the season now: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K It compares with the other two best Cubs relievers so far this year: Wuertz-5.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K Dempster: 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
Giles tried to jump against the doors in right field-it hit off the doors and bounced towards the corner. Giles just stopped and watched the CF run and pick it up in right field. Aramis made it to 3rd easily.
Somebody will need to pitch April 22 if there are no rainouts. The next off day is not until 8 games from now. That's what he said-he said the 5th starter wouldn't be needed until May after Sunday (the 22nd).
Well, he said it after the Cedeno at-bat. When you have one out and your have your backup glove first catcher and the pitcher up, there isn't much hope there.
The NBA has suspended officials before, but only for a game or two at a time, and it hasn't been very many times. I'm not sure how much better in can get with the refs for the NBA-there is so much subjectivity, and usually people are watching the entire court and can see all the possible fouls (for example, in the NFL there's a lot of possible penalties that don't get noticed because there is so much action going on many different parts of the field). That makes the NBA hardest to officiate IMO.
The likelihood is that Guzman would have a hard time getting stretched out enough to start on Sunday anyway. Now he possibly has a minor league start in between, and that will make it much easier to make a move if the organization thinks that he can pitch enough innings.
It may not have been a failure of the Cubs to move Jones-they weren't willing to move Jones until they could find a CF to replace him, and they never could do that. Without the need to find a CF to replace him, he likely will be easier to move.
He wasn't going to be available for the next couple days anyway. It will be very interesting to see what he does when he goes to the minors. If he starts a game, then he might come back up in 10 days as the 5th starter.
