How is he not? The NL selected 7 outfielders for this. Soriano is among NL outfielders: 6th in OPS 6th in BA 13th in OBP 5th in SLG 4th in HR (tied) 3rd in 2B (tied) 2nd in RS 3rd in Hits 11th in SB 1st in outfield assists (tied) 0 errors (the only OF on the All-Star team to do that) Whichever stats you like, Soriano is an All-Star. He's been better than Carlos Lee for example all the way around, and Lee is an All-Star-so Soriano isn't even the worst OF on the squad.

I was surprised when I looked up Diaz's stats to find that he has hit right-handers better than left-handers in his career-not exactly the platoon option that would help the Cubs, as they already have about 4 of those guys. -

Can someone point me in the direction of a site where they show team splits vs Lefty or Righty pitchers??? If you go to ESPN.com team batting statistics, you can sort it against left-handers and against right-handers. Here are the Cubs splits: vs right: .276/.337/.422 (5th in league) vs left: .246/.303/.416 (11th in league) Oh, and if you want record against right-handers and left-handers (like Fred so nicely provided) you can sort them on MLB.com Standings page by clicking on the vs L and vs R tabs above the standings.

Actually, Lou named Howry the closer for now before the Brewers series. Since it was a 4 run game, Marmol was allowed to go another inning and close it out. If the reports are right though, Howry will be coming in during save situations the next week.

That's how I feel. I hope Z pitches Tuesday, Sunday, and then again the next Friday to open the second half. It would really help the team keep rolling, and I don't really want the All-Star game to possibly disrupt that.

One thing that should also be mentioned is that during Marquis's struggles, he has faced all good offenses: Florida: 3rd in NL in runs Milwaukee (twice): 2nd in NL Atlanta: 6th in NL (and their offense was ranked 2nd in runs at the time Marquis faced them) Colorado: 4th in NL Texas: 3rd in AL Seattle: 6th in AL So for the last 7 starts, he's faced offenses ranked in the top 6 of their league. His next 3 starts will all be against teams ranked 9th or worse. So it will be interesting to see if he can put together a better July against worse offenses than he saw in June.

Like somebody said, this is probably a blessing in disguise. Right now, resting that knee is the best move for him.

A pretty good day today for the Cubs in the WC chase. They pick up half a game overall. They are only 1 game behind Philly, 2 games behind Atlanta, 4.5 behind Arizona, and 5 back against the WC leading Dodgers. If the Cubs can take advantage of their soft schedule this week, they should be right in the thick of the WC race at the break.

Seriously. We need to win at least 5 of the 7 vs. WASH and PIT, if not 6. I'd be pretty happy with 5 considering they are on the road. I'm not sure it's quite fair (not saying you're doing this) to expect to win 6 out of 7 on the road against any opponents. 4-3 would leave me a little disappointed.

The Cubs need this one. They face 4 left-handers this week (although thankfully Z starts in 2 of those games) and they need to beat up on the 3 right-handers they face.

Which is interesting, because Seattle is the type of team that I thought you couldn't stand Sulley. They swing early and try to put everything into play. They are last in the majors in walks and strikeouts while being middle of the league in stolen bases. Is that the result of the team being built completely differently than Hargrove wants? -
this was his first quality start since May 24th. he has been mediocre or worse in every start since then (besides today, when he really should have gone 8 or perhaps more. lou sucks at BP management). Yeah, most of his good starts did come in the first two months. He did have a chance or two this month where he pitched well and got a little unlucky with one big hit (Seattle is the prime example of this). In the first month and a half, those big hits were not coming for the opposition, and in the last month they have (plus a couple bad outings as well). That will probably even out as the months go along. I'd be very happy if he ends up with an ERA right around 4, and I think he has a pretty good shot of doing that. I predicted an ERA around 4.5, and a 4 would be outstanding production for the salary compared to what other pitchers were getting this offseason in the market.

yeah, but this performance today better not get him any more unnecessary playing time. theriot is not an everyday player in any s4ense of the word. Yup. Keep Theriot rested-it looks like his bat is better when that's the case. Hopefully DeRosa can take over SS and Theriot can spell him every few days for either a day off or a day when DeRosa moves to another position.

That was a good pitch-you can tell that DeRosa had absolutely no idea that Bush would throw a changeup against a right-hander on a 3-2 count.

Wow-if you had said before the season that Hargrove would be gone by mid-season, I don't think anybody would have questioned it. The Mariners are playing way over their head though, and that makes this sudden resignation absolutely shocking. -
Be all right Marquis. His sinker and his command is slowly coming back-his mechanics also look a lot better then they did a couple of starts ago. I'm not sure he can return to the way he was at the beginning of the season, but if he can keep these mechanics I think he'll start to stop his downward slide.

I'm guessing because Fontenot has been slugging so well and driving in a bunch of runs that Lou wants to put him in more RBI positions by batting him near the middle of the order. I think that's the case as well. Lou starts his lineup with Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez in their spots. Then he fills in his next best hitter at 5, then the next one at 6, then the next one at 2, then at 7, then at 8. Since Floyd is not playing today, DeRosa moves to 5 and Fontenot to 6, and then he apparently decided that Theriot was the better #2 hitter than Pagan so he put him there.

Probably for the best. Floyd has played 4 games in a row-give him a day off to make sure he doesn't get hurt.

A DFA wouldn't have helped Petrick come back-only a DL stint for somebody can do that. They can't really push Eyre to the DL, because he would almost certainly fight it. It's hard to tell right now if Cherry really is hurt, or if he is just a little more accommodating. My guess is that his shoulder does hurt a little bit, and he'd be out for 2-3 days, and they took the opportunity to put him on the DL. He's eligible to come off just a couple games after the All-Star break, so it's not that bad for him either.

The same Barrett had 5 guys steal out of 5 attempts the day before with Chris Young on the mound. One of those steals was Russell Martin stealing 3rd. Barrett was never good at blocking balls, but he's been absolutely brutal this year in regards to passed balls. And 3 guys did still bases successfully against Barrett last night, including Luis Gonzalez. So basically, he nailed 1 out of 9 in the last 2 games. He's never been good at throwing runners out, but I don't see our current batch blowing doors off nailing runners either. My main point is, the whole 'addition by subtraction' thing with Barrett hasn't panned out. Our pitchers have not improved with him gone. Marquis is still a 5.2IP 4ER performance most times out. Marshall is still Marshall. Lilly is still only good when he feels like it. Hill is still sliding. It hasn't not panned out yet either. Barrett has been pretty awful both offensively and defensively for the Padres so far, and Bowen has been beyond awful so far offensively and ok defensively. Right now, it's pretty close to a tie-it will have to be seen which catcher breaks out of their slump first.

Does anybody know why they settled on 7 games to begin with? I know the first World series was a best of 9, and then they went to 7 games, and then they went back to 9 games for 3 years (including the Sox scandal year) and then back to 7. I would think they would have liked 9 better.

It will be very interesting to see the SS situation tomorrow. It's pretty obvious that the Fontenot experiment at SS is over. Is DeRosa going to get some starts at SS? Or are the Cubs back to Theriot/Izturis (hopefully in that scenario Cedeno comes up instead)? It might be hard to tell with Marquis on the mound-Lou might put one of Theriot or Izturis in there tomorrow and then put DeRosa in for other pitchers, but I hope he lets DeRosa get some time there.
