    There wasn't anything close to a hold along the rest of the line. That was a terrible call that really screwed the Bears over.

    The belief is that he's better batting leadoff. We'll see. I like him 5th behind Lee and Ramirez, with Murt hitting 2nd and hopefully Julio Lugo batting 1st at SS (SB Tribune reported today that the Cubs are hot for Lugo). I'd be utterly shocked if he doesn't bat leadoff. Happy, though. Quite happy.

    I'm not being sarcastic. He isn't worth 8 figures. Hell most players in baseball are not worth their contracts. He is overpaid, and probably overrated, but still, match him up with Lee, and Aram...and we have some major thunder in the lineup now. No, he's not major thunder, that's the point. For crying out loud, Barrett is probably just as good if not better offensively after they both regress from their career years. One more time: Soriano 2004: .280 .324 .484 .808 2005: .268 .309 .512 .821 2006: .277 .351 .560 .911 Why leave out 03 and 02? Fine. Add in the previous three years in which he was above average at best: 2001 .268 .304 .432 .736 2002 .300 .332 .547 .879 2003 .290 .338 .525 .863 Then he was average before a career year. And if you put them all together, you get a career line of .280 .325 .510 .835. So now we have a grossly overpaid leadoff hitter with good power and little ability to get on base.

    I'm much more worried about his sucking at the age of 31 relative to that deal. Maybe he will. But on the other hand, maybe this is a sign that he's learned his lesson relative to guys that seem to have an injury bug following them around re: JD Drew. Soriano and Drew were the two guys that gave us the best chance to win now, and getting one of them would be a great accomplishment. So you throw over a hundred million at a guy who's already 30 and has had exactly one great season? All I see is a player who has never shown an ability to get on base at a good rate, can't play defense, and played out of his mind SLG wise for one season. How is that more dependable than JD Drew, who will be cheaper for fewer years, much more consistent, and better defensively? Hendry just hasn't shown an ability to understand why OBP is important.
