  1. Weren't you big on Antonelli before? Did you cool on him or did White just grow on you more? Im an Antonelli guy. White's no different than, say, hiring Tim Wilken as our GM. I'd hire Ng before white. Who's Antonelli? Assistant to Shapiro in Cleveland. Regarded as one of the top GM candidates out there. Relies heavily on modern statistical methods. Sounds awesome. Pretty much guarantees the Cubs won't hire him. He probably won't even apply for the job. I have one last bit of hope because of McDounough. He strikes me as a sound business guy, so I'm hoping he will realize that this direction the Cubs need to take right now. I'm thinking McDonough (sp?) might be out of the "Team President" role as it would largely be superfluous once the Cubs have an owner that isn't a corporation. I'm trying hard to think of another team that has a "Team President" as a barrier between the owners and the GM, but I can't think of any.

  4. If that were the case, I might actually be able to scrounge up some sort of sympathy for the guy. Maybe.
  5. Yeah, I think his contract is up after this year... ::mind wanders:: Good luck finding him though. He's incognito. Crazy ass gaijin, that Valentine. http://www.mysticgames.com/famouspeople/pictures/BobbyValentine.jpg  One of my favorite Valentine moments.
  6. Zambrano acknowledged the drop in velocity, but never attributed it to anything, other than being 'not injured'. He might not necessarily know he's injured. He acknowledges the drop in velocity, yet cannot explain it. That means an injury is still very much in play as far as I'm concerned. True.
  7. So continue on arguing that the tow druck driver and stalled car owner have a right to be sued, but you will continue to make fools of yourselves. you really don't get it, do you? There is nothing really to get. You are in the minority. Pretty much 99% of baseball fans agree bringing the tow truck driver and stalled car owner to court is assinine. But carry on. Like it or not, we have an easily accessible legal system. The problem I see with determining negligence or liability based on media and police reports up to this point, is simple --- we don't know all of the facts. I worked for a firm defending insurance cases like this and similar cases were brought against the insurance company. There were generally two outcomes: 1. There were either more facts to justify the law suit or 2. The plaintiff lost. Let the system work. Because the "system" is sooo perfect. Please  i'd love to hear some of your ideas to fix it. It probably involves something like firing jim hendry, lou peniella, scott eyre, ryan dempster, and not allowing people to sue for liability.

  10. I guarantee that Beane would get us to the WS in less than 3 years. Because Oakland has got there so often, right? He'd be an upgrade, but he's not a complete savior either. Getting to the WS is a combination of design, talent, and lots of luck. I don't thnk you can realistically guarantee anybody could do it in 3 years. Actually, Oakland has performed pretty well with spare parts. Unleash the Cubs budget on Billy Beane and there's a pretty strong chance he could build a perennial contender. I agree, I think he would do better. But is he considered a failure if he doesn't get the Cubs to WS within 3 years? That is the point I was trying to make. I see. In my opinion, 5 years would probably more realistic, with the three-year mark being a great point to take stock of the changes so far. I don't doubt that he could get us to the WS in three years, but as has been said before, it requires a lot of things to come together, some of which are out of Beane's control. If he could get the team to the playoffs in successive years, that would be a wonderful start. Crap, I don't even know why I'm allowing myself to entertain this idea. It'll never happen.
  11. Good. Though knowing this team, he'll be 4-8 after tomorrow's game.
  12. I voted for Sori.

  14. I understand all of this. My point was that the quote left me thinking that he fails to understand the mechanics of the game and especially his role on the team. ERA is a somewhat flawed stat, however it is a far more accurate indicator as to how well one has pitched than win and loss statistics. FWIW, while he may have two more wins, he also has two more losses than he did at this point last year. Now, that being said, It's clear that Zambrano is in the unenviable position of needing to pitch well both to help his team win but also so he can secure his livelihood. He was simply providing his perspective as to why people shouldn't worry about his performance thus far. It may have come off as overreaction and probably was, but my purpose was to point something out, not to necessarily drag him over the coals or expect him to be a stat guru.
  15. Well, a smart Cubs fan would bring a dummy ball along and throw that back if he/she caught it.
  16. That seems a bit extreme. Its cheating, cheaters get suspended right? Usually. Is this situation covered in the rule book?
  17. Bobby Valentine has always been a favorite of mine.
  18. If you think about it though we are about 1/4 of the way through the season. Meaning the sample is about twice as much as a full season of a starting pitcher or four times as much as a full season of a starting position player (of the top of my head). what
  19. True, but bringing A-Rod out of the pen would probably produce better results than throwing Eyre out there time after time in winnable ballgames.
  20. Why is it so diffucult for so many folks to understand that *both* of the following can be true, simultaneously: * Josh Hancock was incredibly stupid, foolish, reckless, and blameworthy; * Other people besides Josh Hancock contributed to the accident, and might bear a portion of the blame. Why are these concepts viewed as mutually exclusive? They're not. I think a lot of people just don't believe point number two is true. he said that they both could be true. if point number two isn't true, then hancock will lose. but that determination has to be made by a judge/jury, not message board majority. What a fickle justice system.
  21. That seems a bit extreme.
