Ramirez apparently hurt his wrist originally in spring training, but the swelling had worsened. He was sent to have the hand checked by a specialist before the Cubs played the Reds at Wrigley Field Friday, but no diagnosis was available. "He just got up this morning and had some swelling," general manager Jim Hendry said. Asked if Ramirez did something over the past two days, when the Cubs did not play, to aggravate it, Hendry replied, "No, not that I know of." Ramirez's place at third base would have been filled by Mark DeRosa, but he also was unavailable Friday because of back spasms. Utility infielder/outfielder Ryan Theriot started at third base and Ronny Cedeno at second.
