    Pooooooooooor Chapman!!! Won't anyone think of the man that just served a domestic violence suspension and at a minimum fired a gun eight times in his garage scaring his girlfriend into hiding in the bushes?! And, according to her initial story, choked her and pushed her against a wall? So mistreated!

    Oh, is that how it works? Murders and child molesters get out and then they have no troubles after that? No trouble getting jobs or anything? They don't have to register with authorities, or attend therapy, or notify neighbors about their past? They just get out and move along as normal? Matt Bush is a pretty bad dude and even went to prison...and by bad guy I mean a really bad guy. He beat the [expletive] out of a high schooler with a golf club, ran over the head of a 74 year old while drunk, is a suspect in multiple hit and runs and has run up a tidy 3 DUIs in his lifetime. It's weird that he's portrayed in the media as some feel good story. He shouldn't be allowed to play Major League Baseball but he throws hard...and is white? This is how our society works. I'll admit I don't know much about Matt Bush, but assuming everything you said is accurate, that dude should never have played again.

    1) Drinking is not a justification for anything. 2) A woman not wanting to press charges against her batterer is EXTREMELY COMMON. 3) You are aren't defending what he did, you're diminishing it.

    If you want to be upset at acquiring Chapman, feel free. I've said more than once that's more than justified. But at least acknowledge that there's not going to be a response that makes it right for you. The statement talks about working with his girlfriend to improve their relationship and raise their son together. That's just talk, but you can fake your way through anger management too. There was never going to be a meaningful sentiment behind a statement like this, but for what it is it hits the right notes. All true except for the part about the right notes. I don't think it hit any notes.

    I mean, he literally says "I regret that I did not exercise better judgment and for that I am truly sorry". It's just words on a page so it doesn't undo anything that he did, but a small part of the irritation with Chapman was his lack of remorse. A professional hobby of mine is giving and evaluating apologies, and that's a pretty good one. It doesn't hide behind passive wording like apologize, or separate himself from the behaviors by saying he's sorry for the effects of his behavior. He's directly saying he's sorry for his (admittedly ambiguous) actions, and like Brett just pointed out on Twitter, he didn't have to do this as a guy who was traded (there's no extra motivation like a contract for him). Again, it doesn't undo anything that happened and people are still right to not be happy, but this is what handling the acquisition properly looks like given the realities of the situation. Cool, he's sorry. He didn't say what he did. He didn't say he'd done anything or taken any action to prevent further issues in the future. Maybe some anger management counseling... Handling the acquisition properly would've been to have not made it.

    I've also compartmentalized in the past, in mostly the same instances you have, but I'm extremely tired of doing so. And for right now, I'm angry at the Cubs for putting me in the position where I have to do it again.

    Hahaha, it's funny when people have a moral objection to a guy being on their favorite baseball team that is a domestic violence incident in his recent history. Good one. It was more commentary on the horse being beaten to death in this thread. Someone made a suggestion to have a Chapman: Good Baseball Player and a Chapman: Awful Human Being thread, which I thought was a good idea. It's a terrible idea. That just make it easier to ignore the things that make him a terrible human, and those things shouldn't be ignored.
