  1. Funny you should ask...Derwood more or less asked the same question earlier today in some other thread which escapes me right now... It's the name of a character from a series of roleplaying adventure books called Lone Wolf that I read as a kid.
  2. Has Burrell played any RF? EDIT: Beaten to this question...lol
  3. I'd be giddy if that would work. Unfortunately my innate Cubs pessimism tells me it won't happen. I really hope I'm wrong.
  4. I can't drive, so its a fairly safe bet that I wasn't doing. Just to be nosy, is there a reason you can't drive? Just by choice?
  5. I'd completely forgotten about that... :)
  6. Let's not wait for Walt. Fire Hendry now and hire Depo. With the sale of the Cubs upcoming, Hendry isn't going anywhere till the offseason. I'm not sure I'd want to be hired as "interim" GM right now for the Cubs...I'd say it's likely that the new owners will want to make their own GM hire.
  7. Just to play a little devil's advocate (because I do like Walt Jocketty as a GM), don't the Cubs just have better talent because they suck and get high draft picks every year? So arguably there's less development necessary?
  8. Uh, I think we pretty much know what happened. Hendry basically laid it out for us. yes, they fleeced us with the Pierre deal and were attempting to do so again -- Jim wised up to their evil games this time Jim should have a "Marlins rule" when it comes to taking phone calls from them. Unless the opening sentence of the conversation is "We'd like to see what we can do to unload Miguel Cabrera," Jim should hang up the phone.
  9. Angelo had a bunch of experience, but none as a GM. You're right, my bad. I thought that's the position he held in TB.
  10. I wonder if the Zell reports are accurate. I mean I know Hendry has to act as if he's in control and all, but this blurbmakes it sound like Hendry was the one that backed out of a bad deal, not anything more. But I realize that could be a PR thing.
  11. That's alot of salary to eat (assuming it includes '08 as well). I think they probably figure at this point they were gonna have to pay him either way, so maybe they figure it's a sunk cost. At least in a trade they may get something back for that.
  12. I don't think it'll come to that. I think Hendry will take less for one of those 2 to just get rid of them.
  13. Who's playing short in this IF?
  14. Yeah, but it has to happen tonight. The bullpen is overtaxed and it's unreasonable to expect that Lilly will pitch a complete game. They need another pitcher. Certainly, but that doesn't mean that Jacque will be the one moved. I'm half expecting Pagan to get an (undeserved) demotion. That'd be tough to do after his homer last night...
  15. They have 23 more games against teams that currently have a record above .500. 6 vs MIL, 6 vs AZ, 4 vs PHL, 4 VS LAD and 3 vs NYM. The rest is mainly against the rest of the NL Central. So 64 more games vs .500 or worse teams. If they can take 2 of 3 from all these games, that would be 43-21, leaving them at 79 wins. Have a couple hiccups here and there against those teams and hopefully they can go at least 38-26 (.590 W%). Then you have those 23 games against the good guys. 10-13 against those teams would leave the Cubs at 84 wins. If 5 or 6 of those 10 are against Milwaukee, maybe that's enough. If not, it's probably a bit short. I think the best hope is that Milwaukee goes on another cold stretch like they went through earlier this season.
  16. Not to mention the Cubs are still 7 games under .500 in the NL...Interleague really kinda saved their bacon. They're gonna have to play a lot better against NL teams to make a run.
  17. This is being discussed here: http://www.northsidebaseball.com/PremiumForum/viewtopic.php?t=41387 viewtopic.php?t=41387
  18. What about Shapiro's right hand man Antoinetti? That is who I am died hard on for next Cubs GM. he's probably good, but given that the cubs are one of the higher-profile teams in the game, i'm hoping they can get a guy who's been a GM in the past Agree. The Ed Lynch and Jim Hendry learn on the job experiments have been disasters. Indeed, but the league is stock full of reclycled GMs who are a bunch of garbage. Experience in the GM role is way down the list of qualities I want the next guy to have. I realize that other sports are not the best way to gauge success in baseball, but the two most successful GM's in this town are John Paxson and Jerry Angelo. Angelo had a bunch of experience, while Paxson had none, and yet both have experienced a pretty good amount of success with their respective teams. I think it just goes to show that experience isn't necessarily an indicator of success, though it isn't necessarily a bad thing either.
  19. He's not on probation according to the Trib.
  20. Can't say I'm terribly crushed...it's disappointing though. I had hoped he'd actually follow through on some of the things he was saying.
  21. I defy anyone with a pulse to have watched yesterdays game and not think it was unbelievably exciting. Yeah, that 8th inning rundown was great...
  22. I'd love to know where he got some of that info. For example, the part about the sale including Wrigley is completely contrary to what we've heard previously. There's no mention at all of other candidates, like Colangelo or Cuban, and it says that the bidding will begin this summer, when my understanding is that the sale process wouldn't begin until the offseason.
  23. Voted for Soccer mostly because I'm tired of hearing how fantastic the California weather is. :sunny:
  24. I hope they aren't holding their breath for that to happen. I hope they are. According to the Trib, when Cora came out after Ozzie was ejected, it was because he was trying to file a protest. But he couldn't because when the umps asked him what rule he was protesting, he couldn't say, because he didn't even know what had happened because he wasn't out there for the argument.
  25. Teddy Greenstein already has an article on it. Apparently Ed Farmer was just as bad on the radio. Teddy says only Pat Hughes got it right, but for some reason he completely ignores Len and Bob either way.... http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/columnists/cs-070624greenstein,1,3081710.column?coll=cs-home-headlines
