  1. I can't really understand why a team's fanbase can "never forgive" a team for doing all it can to make the playoffs in a given year. Especially when doctors said Woody couldn't hurt his arm any further by pitching down the stretch. Even though it was unlikely, at least they didn't just give up ala the Sox of 97 or whenever that was.
  2. Well, that news should make for some happy posters on this board.
  3. All this said...why the title of this thread? Did I miss something or isn't Cedeno still the starter for now?
  4. Why would Nomar sign here to back up Cedeno and maybe play OF when he could start everyday in LA in an understood role as the everyday 1B?
  5. I agree with the notion that team chemistry is *much* less of a factor in baseball than it is in football or basketball...but, I do think it is still a slightly relevant factor...one that shouldn't be discounted entirely. JMO.
  6. Doesn't Walker hit lefties and righties almost equally well?
  7. Don't forget to measure the size of his heart. Nah, it's all about guts. That's why Ponson won the fifth starter job in StL. Reyes's spring performance didn't really give them much of a choice on that one.
  8. Watson only had 40 at bats and Church was rather awful after the break. I'm not sure that you could categorize this move as a "horrible, horrible" one just yet.
  9. Because I think it is easier to find an offensively productive CF than an offensively productive SS.
  10. IMHO, there is a difference between a leadoff hitter who plays SS and a leadoff hitter who plays CF. The former is certainly more valuable to a team.
  11. One thing I think the Cubs will likely improve on is...now hear me out here...luck. I found these interesting numbers the other day: Last year, the A's as a team had an OBP of .330. The Cubs had a team OBP of .324. (obviously a DH is responsible for some of the difference here). Additionally, the A's had a team OPS of .737. The Cubs had one of .764. Who had more runs? The A's by 69. I find it hard to believe that a team with an OPS of almost 30 less than another was really nearly 70 runs better. Now, were the Cubs that unlucky or were the A's overly lucky? Or a little of both? Interesting numbers nonetheless. And maybe an indication that if the Cubs really did improve their team OBP, even by 5 points or so, they will be in for a lot more runs.
  12. It seems like we agree on him. One thing that is strange is that he's hit 4 HR's in 37 AB's in the spring while only hitting 15 in 2048AB's over his career. Granted spring training number don't mean much but I wonder if there is anything behind that (change of approach, hitting mechanics, etc..) or if it's just dumb luck. Arizona weather. Pagan is not a guy I want to see on the bench for the Cubs THIS YEAR. IMO They need someone with some pop. I'd prefer Sing or Restovich. Pagen might make a good 5th outfielder but the Cubs need someone capeable of hitting a HR on the bench. It looks like Mabry and Walker are guys off the bench that are capable of hitting a home run. I wouldn't mind seeing Restovich there too though, so that they can have a RH who can do it. But, Pagan gives them the speedy defensive OF who is nice to have off the bench as well.
  13. I thought LeMar was fired after the 2005 season?
  14. Maybe some in the org. are realizing you have to change if things haven't been working. That's possible. Or maybe these younger players are better than ones that the Cubs have had in the past.
  15. Honestly, I don't see what is wrong with starting a AA pitcher in the 5th hole spot if he is ready....contending team or not. Players make the jump from AA to the majors all the time. And it's the 5th spot in the rotation, not necessarily a high pressure spot on the roster. I guess I am just saying I see the crux of your post to be a non-issue. Did you find anything wrong with the A's using Joe Blanton as their #5 last year to start the season? If anything, I took Hendry's comment about Duke to be a good sign that at least a couple of the Cubs' pitching prospects are going to get some good time this year on the big club.
  16. You'd probably be better served looking to their career minor league statistics than basing your opinion on a limited number of innings this spring. Guzman has his 2.22 bb/9 over approximately 421 minor league innings. Marshall has his 2.5 bb/9 over approximately 252 minor league innings.
  17. Is he the only one who has made a one pitch out today?
  18. You might not have to look any further than cross-town. The Sox, despite winning the World Series last year, had pretty mediocre OPS's in their OF...and that was with Rowand instead of Anderson and Dye having his best year in a while.
  19. I don't understand why they would keep Grissom, which means they have to open up a 40 man roster spot for him, when they have a guy like Pagan who is very similar (if not better) who had a great spring and is already on the 40 man roster.
  20. Maybe I am missing something, but doesn't Kiley's article indicate that they are still thinking of carrying 12 pitchers? I hope I am wrong, but that is how I read it.
  21. Choi doesn't offer the flexibility of being able to play the OF and 3B.
  22. I really don't know. I know he has tools out of his ears, but that k/bb rate does worry me some. However, each time I have seen him play this spring, I have come away very impressed...especially with his ability to hit the ball to the opposite field with power. I am going to the game tomorrow, so am hoping I can see him in person. I haven't seen him play in person since he was in low A.
  23. Why take that condescending, smart-alec tone? I was obviously responding to Geech's statement that Pie "wasn't that great of a prospect" by showing a statement from somebody in major league baseball that thought otherwise.
  24. Really? From Ken Rosenthal on FoxSports.com: A rival general manager says of Cubs center-field prospect Felix Pie: "He's going to be a superstar. He's really fun to watch. He's just got electric tools. He can fly. He's got power. He plays the heck out of center field. He just needs some experience." So, becuase Ken Rosenthal prints an annonymous qoute that makes Pie a superstar in the making? I don't see where I said he was a superstar in the making. I was simply pointing to a quote from an NL GM that suggests that Pie is more than just a "big fish in a small pond."
  25. Heck, I'll answer my own question. In 2002, when he had his 39 HR/41 Steal year with the Yanks, he had a 822 OPS at home and a 933 OPS on the road. In 2003, he had a 805 OPS at home and a 917 OPS on the road. While the trend reversed itself with Texas, I still think that too much is being made of his home/road splits. His numbers obviously aren't all a product of the Ballpark at Arlington (or whatever it is called now).
