  1. The silver lining is that Blanco has been virtually impossible to run on.
  2. OK, I should rephrase. Barrett did sit out the last game of the Marlins series...but had started the last 3-4 before that. He was due to take a game off and the extent of his injury was still unknown heading into yesterday's game.
  3. But the point is, going into yesterday, he hadn't missed any.
  4. There's obviously a difference between hiding an injury for strategic purposes vis a vis another baseball team and hiding an injury to try to pull the wool over fans' eyes like was the implication made around here. But, go ahead an ignore that distinction so that you can make your "point".
  5. I really don't care what his WARP1, or whatever it is, was. He was a leadoff hitter who led the league in hits in 2004 and had OBPs of .374 and .361. Good years. But that is a discussion for another thread that I'm sure has been hashed out a thousand times. My point was that a good year like Clark's gets downplayed because of what he did the couple of years before, YET Pierre's down year last year gets the focus in lieu of what he had done the years before last. Neither appears to get the benefit of the doubt in situations that practically the exact opposite of each other. You'd think one of the two would be more apt to get that benefit, but maybe not. Just an interesting observation.
  6. Funny how some of the same logic isn't afforded to Pierre after having a bad year last year when he had two very good years the years before.
  7. Remember, Dempster (obviously the closer) isn't in these comparisons, while Wagner and Myers are.
  8. Are you guys really ignoring the fact that they "got the pitcher on the ropes" in large part by swinging at his first pitch? Hitters with a threat to do something swung early, that doesn't excuse guys like Neifi and Blanco being overly aggressive. Were they good pitches to hit or not? That's all I care about.

  10. It should be pointed out that Aramis and Jones' doubles were on the first pitch. It's fine to swing at that first pitch if you get a pitch you can drive.
  11. What can you do? Did he throw a ball other than the two that Walker laid off?
  12. What's he suppose to do? Everyone is screaming for him to take pitches from the lead-off spot.
  13. Because he gave them a STEEP hometown discount after his great year last year. 2M total over 2 years was worth it for him if he was able to guarantee he could play where he lived.
  14. Tampa has a glut of outfielders, and Gomes doesn't rate above Crawford, Baldelli, Young, or Upton/Cantu(if either is moved there). They know they aren't going to compete, and like Wilson in Pittsburgh they undervalue his abilities in their distribution of his playing time. Gomes himself isn't the point though. Go after a solution for RF, whether that's Gomes, Wilson, or whoever. I think the comparison of Gomes' situation with the Rays to Wilson's situation with the Pirates is quite misplaced (considering he has started pretty much ever game as their 3 or 4 hitter), but I understand your point.
  15. If the injury forces you to make a move, then make one that has positive effects in the short and long term. Make a run at Jonny Gomes, Craig Wilson, or the like. If that fails, then make sure the person isn't confined to first base in your acquisition. Wilson again, Dmitri Young, Hinske, these guys serve a different purpose and may come at a cheaper cost. I guess I don't see much upside with paying a quality young player to get 2 months of a 1B only 34 year old, then guaranteeing that player money for '07. 1) What makes you think there is any way in this world that the D-Rays would be willing to (or for that matter, have any reason AT ALL to) move Gomes? The dude's making $360K and has 10 bombs. He isn't going ANYWHERE. 2) Guaranteeing him one million? Big whoop.
  16. But at some point, you need to start making moves for the now. Yeah, Williams might be a guy worth keeping around because someday he might come through with all that potential. But, the Cubs also need more help out there in the lineup right now while Lee is out. I'm hoping that Hendry gets proactive and if he can get Clark for Williams, I think he has to do it. Clark will be a great guy to have on the bench and a nice DH option for interleague play. Plus, he is crazy cheap.
  17. What makes you think Restovich wouldn't be claimed? I can see Bynum slipping through, but not so sure about Restovich. Anyway, what are Hoffpair's stats right now?
  18. His contract is a little more than decent. It's spectacular.
  19. He's a switch-hitter. he'd be a nice option off the bench once DLee came back if he could play more than 1B. He can't. But, he's still a nice option to have. Would people consider Wuertz for him to be a good deal? I definitely would.
  20. ...if the trade makes sense for the D-backs. He is definitely a nice, cheap, right-handed option to fill in for Lee. http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbacks/articles/0427dbacknb0427.html
  21. I think I just lost respect for the man. It's hard to have any left when all he does is write about the same thing over and over again and continues to slam college athletics. I lost interest long ago.
  22. I haven't seen any of the game, and am listening on the radio, but I will say that Guzman is looking good enough that Ron Santo actually appears to be paying attention. First inning jitters. Single up the middle erased by a DP, triple, HBP, but got out of it with no runs. 2nd inning--- Dominant. It certainly was dominant. Here's to hoping he can do something similar to the top of the order when he faces them again. Those hitters in the 2nd weren't much of a threat.
  23. The thing that people tend to forget is that most, if not all, of the youngsters that Cub fans were clammoring to get playing time in the past (Hill, Harris, Choi, Dubois, etc) really haven't done anything of note now that they have moved on from the Cubs. Maybe they really weren't that good. Maybe it is more of an instance of now Baker has younger players who are better than those other guys and more worthy of getting regular time.
