  1. His teammate, Bryan Frew, another outfielder was drafted in the 43rd round last year by the Phillies. He was signed and played on their short season team with unimpressive statistics. In college, he showed much less power, a lower average, but he did have 35 stolen bases. His defense was terrible (9 errors in the outfield). A left-handed pitcher Timothy Huber was drafted in the 27th round by the Royals, and only going on statistics seems to be pretty impressive. 95 K's in 78.1 IP - 3.22 ERA, but a fairly high WHIP (72 H's & 31 BB's). I would guess based on others from his team and the conference they play in, Weimer would have probably been drafted in rounds 20-30. His stock was definitely on the rise, however, as he had changed his batting stance significantly which allowed him to hit for power, so someone could've taken a chance on him a bit earlier than the 20th round. (Just my speculation.)
  2. Possibly. Weimer went undrafted but it was due to a car accident he had in the days leading up to the draft. Teams were scared off, but it's possible the Cubs had him tryout and noticed that he regained what he had during last year's season. http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=3925&u_sid=10367196 Interesting article that says he seems to have quite a few tools (defense, speed, power, and ability to hit for average). http://media.www.unogateway.com/media/storage/paper968/news/2008/04/11/Sports/Senior.Standout.On.Fire-3317876.shtml

  4. Adam Kennedy has been released by the St. Louis Cardinals. He is a lefty second baseman who can play the corner outfield spots, and has recently played once or twice at SS and 1B. He seems to be very similar to Mike Fontenot (who might be traded in a Peavy deal, hence our interest in Orlando Hudson). Kennedy should come cheaply since St. Louis has to pay his entire $4,000,000 contract (he fits the mold of a Reed Johnson/Jim Edmonds type cheap signing). His numbers last year were decent and his three year splits suggest good things. He hits very well at Wrigley. What does everyone think? By the way, Aurilia has officially signed with the Giants according to MLB Trade Rumors.
  5. His splits last year were opposite of what the Cubs usually look for. (Much lower numbers on the road, during day games, and as a RHB).
  6. Random thoughts... My gut tells me (and I consult with it often) that we would only be interested in Hudson if he came very cheaply. This couldn't have been the original plan (trading DeRosa and signing a FA infielder to start), but due to the fact that he is still available, that may have piqued Hendry's interest. DeRosa was not going to be re-signed for next year and the Cubs probably wouldn't have offered him arbitration, so trading him (although unpopular) will be a solid baseball move if any of the prospects turn out or get used in a future trade. If Hudson is signed by the Cubs (which I doubt), that should effectively end trade talks for Peavy since all of our 2009 money will have been used up and the Padres most certainly won't be taking back salary. I also think Hudson would have to be OK with a slightly more limited role with the Cubs as I'm sure the Cubs would like to keep Fontenot and Theriot in the lineup on several occasions.
  7. Isn't he a Type A free agent? I would prefer not to lose a 1st round draft pick. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/02/cafardos-late-1.html
  8. Decent article on Brandon Guyer: http://centralillinoisproud.com/content/fulltext/?cid=45072
  9. Decent article on Ryan Searle trying out for the Australian World Classic Team. Is that what we call Fitch Park? http://caboolture-shire-herald.whereilive.com.au/sport/story/searle-in-australian-squad/
  10. Just thought this was interesting... The article talks about Hendry and Seattle GM Zduriencik's discussions regarding the potential of trading for Heilman. They had already agreed on Garrett Olson, but Zduriencik also asked for Cedeno... The article was an interesting read about the evolution of a trade between GM's. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/399030_thiel06.html
  11. IIRC Koyie Hill is out of options. Everyone, including me, have been expecting him to share catching duties with Welington Castillo at Iowa, but I'm starting to think that now that we have signed Paul Bako to be the Chicago backup, Koyie Hill is a goner!? Can anyone confirm or deny that for me? Also, was Tony Richie a minor league free agent?
  12. Quote from Boston College after McGill was drafted in 2006. http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cache:PG9ZO3lTCOIJ:grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/bc/sports/m-basebl/auto_pdf/MediaGuide.pdf+%22Shawn+McGill%22+Phillies&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=42&gl=us&client=firefox-a
  13. http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3773109 He hasn't played above short season ball, and is already 24. He could get a look at the Daytona backup catcher spot. If he is not released after spring training, he could be considered for catching spots at Peoria and Boise as well. (My speculation)
  14. Raisin or anyone else - Would someone mind listing the players that received an honorable mention? The players that didn't rank in the top 30, but are listed as depth at each position? Thanks in advance - I enjoy seeing who makes that list and who doesn't.
  15. Good information on the Korean kids: Su-Min Jung, Jae-Hoon Ha, and Hak-Ju Lee. Mentions Dae-Eun Rhee. Australian kids Cody Hams, Adam Spencer, and Ryan Searle. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090131&content_id=3789288&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
  16. And a WHIP of 4.58 well, that's obviously not true. he had a whip of 1.58 and an era of 4.12. i'm not saying he was good or even acceptable, but guys with a lot worse numbers than that have stuck on major league rosters, and it wasn't like he was killing the team. 6 ip, 4 h, 2 er, 3 bb, 4 k 3 ip, 3 h, 3 er, 4 bb, 3 k 5 ip, 3 h, 1 er, 3 bb, 4 k 5 ip, 3 h, 2 er, 4 bb, 3 k followed by the disaster in st. louis. Please don't forget a disastrous time at Daytona and Iowa last year (nearly a walk per inning), and then his one chance to show the Cubs that he was worth saving was in Venezuela this winter where he had 23 walks in 21 innings pitched in front of one of the Cubs minor league managers (I forget who). The only way Rich Hill becomes the 2007 Rich Hill again is if Dunn and Kranitz can change his mechanics back to what they were. Then, the Cubs should receive a very nice prospect in return.
  17. There's no reason to roster him now, I don't think Jim Hendry really understands how 40 man rosters work. Nevermind this post, Robnett was on Oakland's 40 man roster already. After Snyder is dumped for nothing next offseason, Robnett can take over his spot of OF that will never see the majors and can get dumped in the '11 offseason. FYI - Snyder is out of options and will most likely be released after spring training. He was signed to be insurance for if/when we traded Pie, but Gathright fills his spot. If he does anything in spring training he could be traded for a nobody, he may also be released earlier if we need his roster spot.
