  1. He's primarily DHing. He's probably played about 10 games at catcher, 1 at second base and the rest at DH (in his last 10 games: 5 at C, 4 at DH and 1 at 2B but before that, he went on a long stretch of DHing). A good barometer will be to see how much C he plays next year in Boise after all that time learning the position at instructionals and extended spring training. But the bat looks good thus far...an 18 year old with 19 BB to 19 K? I love it. Thanks for the link, great read. He's also the kid involved with that whole draft signing violation by the Cubs. DH - 23 games C - 12 games 2B - 2 games http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=37101
  2. Apologies. Daytona is 0.5 game behind Jupiter but still in first place. W L PCT GB Daytona 32 22 .593 0.5 Jupiter 36 25 .590 - http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=l_sta&lid=123&period=h2 I don't understand how a team with a higher winning percentage could be behind in the standings (no matter how many games they have played).
  3. Hey Raisin - Is there any way we could create a sticky (or at least a regular posting) where people helped to explain some of the Sabermetric stats that are valuable out there? I have no idea what a FIP is, but I would love to learn. I'm sure I could find a link, but I was hoping for a short & quick explanation of just the most important/useful stats - maybe the ones that you use fairly often to evaluate talent. Thanks in advance.
  4. Actually, he did. If you watch the end of the 5 minute clip that was linked earlier this thread, you see him getting angry at the crowd and he gets restrained (full bear hug) by one of his teammates and he has a bat in his hands!!!
  5. I haven't posted in awhile, but that made me lol!!!! :)
  6. Tony Campana is out 4-6 weeks with a broken hand (on Boise Hawks radio).
  7. Not sure, but when Randy Keisler was granted his release, I don't think they filled his spot on the roster.
  8. http://www.delrionewsherald.com/story.lasso?ewcd=11c65e19421ff595 Only catcher drafted?

  10. What are the odds Cerda was actually taken with the intent to move him to catcher? His high school moved him to catcher this past off-season. With all the second basemen the Cubs drafted, I'm pretty sure they fully intended to at least try him out at catcher when they drafted him. If nothing else, they may just hope he will be able to play catcher, middle infield, and maybe some outfield in the majors. (They seemed to have drafted a lot of "future utility players" in this draft.)
  11. Chris Carpenter - He can still go back to Kent State next year, but has said he’ll sign for slot money so expect to see him signed soon. http://www.anothercubsblog.net/index.php/site/articles/2008_draft_recap/ FYI - Luis Flores was listed as the first catcher taken by the Cubs in this year’s draft, but the club has plans to use fourth-round pick Matt Cerda (Oceanside HS, Calif.) as a catcher, Wilken said. Cerda spent his prep career primarily at shortstop. http://braves.scout.com/a.z?s=248&p=2&c=760440
  12. I hope he's OK. The way he's been pitching this year, he may see a callup in September! Good thing I'm not in charge of the Cubs, because I might have released him before the season started!
  13. I liked what I heard on the short phone interview that ESPN2 had on him - he sounds like he enjoys eating "grilled chicken and avoiding soft drinks." He was respectful and sounded intelligent. I always think that those intangibles are sometimes valuable to know in addition to his repertoire and stats. I think he will get some starts at A-ball before seeing Tennessee. I expect him to have some success at that level because most of those kids don't see 98-mph fastballs too often, but if the Cubs stretch him out too much, his velocity will be back to 90-94 mph and he would seem average. Ryan Faherty has been selected - SS.
  14. Tennessee loses on a walk-off hit (audio cut out - not sure what kind of hit, but it scored two runs to win it).
  15. Peoria loses 9-8 in extra innings. The Chiefs had the lead, but poor defense lost it for Sasser.

  17. I can't help but notice that everyone is out this fine Saturday evening. I am happily in, listening to some games online so here is an update: Peoria up 4-3 in the 5th inning. Daytona is up 5-4 with the bases loaded in extra innings (not sure what inning). Pitching change. Tennessee is tied 1-1 in the 5th inning. "Holliman has been dominant tonight." Iowa is tied at zero early in the game.
  18. I imagine this move makes room for Matt Craig to be activated at Tennessee. My guess is Iowa DL's someone to make room for Pie (or else they could release Carrasco). Any ideas who moves out of Daytona?
  19. Yes - He had surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament (Tommy John surgery) March 27, 2007. He spent the entire 2007 season on the Tigers 60-day DL, before being returned to the Cubs in October. I'm just hoping he is going back to EST due to ineffectiveness and not a serious (re)injury. I'd like to think he still has a bright future, but may need a little more time to heal.
  20. http://www.wbir.com/sports/pro_baseball/minors/story.aspx?storyid=57784&catid=148 Sad to see Salas go - he's been a Cub for a long time. I didn't really think he had too much of a future, but he was a good reserve guy. No word on how Campusano got hurt or what he hurt.
  21. That was quick. This is one of the few times that I am happy to see someone being "rushed" according to normal standards. Russell was so much better than his competition at Low A that it was ridiculous. I hope he continues to progress at Daytona and doesn't struggle. Berg to AAA to me is a sign that he needs to produce or he will soon be forgotten as well - I rank him high on my charts, but he still is having trouble putting it all together. He needs to become more consistent and fast. Good luck Justin! WrigleyRat, Russell was already at A+ Daytona - he's being promoted to AA Tennessee. Whoops! I really shouldn't try to comment on things while on lunch break. 20 minutes just doesn't allow me enough time to put intelligent thoughts together!!! I need days for that. Anyway my thoughts still apply, but change the names of the teams!!! :)

  23. Am I correct when assuming that rehabbing pitchers Eyre and Fox don't count as rostered players assigned to the team, so Daytona didn't have to release Ryan Meyers to make room? I wonder why they chose to release him so quickly this season. He was just acquired this offseason and probably didn't have his best stuff yet. I would have preferred sending him to Mesa to regain velocity or whatever he needed, but releasing him already seems hasty. That is an admission that he was not a good player to ask for in the trade (I think Angel Pagan for Corey Coles & Meyers). Anyone know if there are other reasons why Meyers was released so soon (besides poor production)? Bad attitude? Didn't want to pitch? etc.
