  1. Bruce - If this trade goes down with speedy EPatt and either Marshall or Gallagher, here is your headline tomorrow morning: "Cubs give up an arm and a leg for 2B Roberts" I guess Cedeno would be considered a "glove". Sorry - it's getting late and I've been reading this board for a couple hours. :-"
  2. Am I thinking of a different Brian Roberts? That's awfully steep. Done without a second thought. I must be thinking of a different Brian Roberts too, because that is one lopsided trade. He's basically Matt Murton playing 2nd. That is basically a ridiculous statement. .281 .351 .409 Roberts .296 .365 .455 Murton Sorry, a tad bit worse than Murton. I disagree. Those three statistics aren't the only three you can use to make blanket judgements with. Murton is also a butcher defensively in my opinion. Plus you are comparing statistics of players who play positions with drastically different offensive positions. I don't see Murton as ever being an above average everyday outfielder. He's a nice 4th outfielder type. He doesn't project for power and I don't think he's got enough speed in the field or on the paths to make up for his warning track power. Don't forget that most of Murton's stats are against lefties and weak righties since he mostly platooned last year. Roberts' stats are against all pitchers.
  3. Are you in the future or is the radio off, because I read your post at the time Levine was saying it. Spooky huh?
  4. Doesn't belong here, but Levine said Dempster is going to be given the chance to be the 4th or 5th starter, but if it doesn't work out he'll go back to the bullpen. Hendry wants him to start, but Piniella might prefer him in the bullpen.
  5. Levine says Roberts would bat leadoff (not Soriano). Cedeno would be the Orioles "shortstop of the future!" Good luck with that.
  6. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-roberts1205,0,2777882.story http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-sp.meetings05dec05,0,1809981.story Any chance they might want Dempster (closer) and Gallagher/Marshall (starter) and maybe one of Murton/EPatt/Fox? That could help the Cubs payroll out a bit too!
  7. Is there any kind of rule as to who can play in the AFL? Can a 40-man rostered player go to the AFL? Can a AAA guy like Kroeger or Hoffpauir go? My guesses included some current 40-man guys like Samardzija and Guzman (DL), and some older guys like Mateo, Harben, and McGehee.
  8. Good to see Kroeger back in the lineup. Hochevar struggled in AAA so far, it's disappointing Iowa hasn't cracked a run through 4. Gary Hughes was in the Tennessee broadcast for a long time (I started listening in the 2nd and he left at the 7th inning stretch). Just interesting to listen to. Veal: 6 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 8 K/3 BB, WP, balk, 5 GO-5 FO. Solid outing for Donnie. Raisin - Was there anything Gary Hughes said that would interest us? I'd really like to hear it if you remember anything specific. Thanks!
  9. Vitters is on WGN right now. They said it went "right down to the wire." He is reporting to Mesa.
  10. I think we now know Dopirak's fate... someone should claim him if he is not traded. With all of his injuries and his recent "warm" streak, someone ought to think about him. I feel that this was a bad time to DFA him. A lot of teams have space on their 40-man rosters at this point in the season thanks to injuries. The general rule in baseball is not to make any moves until you are forced to. We could have moved Blanco or Ward to the 60-day DL instead of DFA'ing Dopirak. We might not have had to DFA him at all this winter since we have some players leaving as free agents, trades, etc. Hopefully, it won't matter. Dopirak will go unclaimed. He will return to the minors, have a so-so year, and bounce back next year when he is completely healthy and bulked up. After all, he isn't blocking anyone at first base!
  11. Uh oh! - 3 more strikeouts in 4 at bats today for Chih-Hsiang Wen. I'm not sure how different baseball in Taiwan is from baseball in the Arizona League, but I might recommend he stop holding the barrel-end of the bat when batting?!?!?
  12. For what it's worth: Chih-Hsiang Wen signed for $2,500 + additional money for college tuition. He stands 6'1", weighs 188 pounds, bats and throws righty. He has some power in his bat and has good speed, having run the 100M in 11.30 seconds. Not a household name, the kid has never played on any national squad for Taiwan - although he did graduate from the same junior HS as Chin-Hui Tsao -> Kuang Fu junior high in Hualien, before attending Taitung Agricultural Vocational HS. Wen was primarily a pitcher in HS. http://taiwanbaseball.blogspot.com/search/label/chih-hsiang%20Wen (Scroll down several pages) He also struck out 4 out of 5 at bats today in Mesa!!!
  13. The Cubs have also signed lefty OF Clark Hardman out of Cal State Fullerton. Hardman strained his calf during the College World Series, so he won't report immediately to the Mesa Cubs (Rookie) or Boise (Short A). http://www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=63650 This article is old, but since he played in Mesa yesterday... (I've found Bob Sacramento to be a very trustworthy Cubs source.)
  14. Boise squeaked by 17-5. Kyler Burke went 3 for 4 with a walk!
  15. The article doesn't say they would be packaged together, necessarily.
  16. For what it's worth Raisin, a guy on another board supposedly heard it too. I think this one's more on the score than it is on you...actually he said his friend called him to say he heard it. There was another guy that said he also heard it, and both of them have a decent amount of posts, so its not just some trolls. Wow - I always thought of myself as a rookie, or a fan of the message boards. Now I know I should refer to myself as a troll! I better get my number of posts up!!! (Just kidding!) :) Haha you know what I meant...although now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not sure what I meant...we've had very good posters who don't post all that often and trolls that post every chance they get...so post counts really don't mean much haha. I guess I just meant that they didn't just randomly come over to the site and post it haha. I completely agree but wanted to have some fun at your expense! After reading pages and pages of posts and saying nothing, I had to get my two cents in somehow!

  18. Guess who's at short? It's 3:45 in the afternoon at Wrigley Field and Ivan DeJesus is hitting grounders to short and Mike Fontenot and Ryan Theriot. A little while ago, bench coach Alan Trammell was at the bag with the two, apparently practicing turning double plays. Could Lou Piniella's big surprise be to give Fontenot more playing time at short, allowing Mark DeRosa to move back to second and Theriot to become the back-up at both spots? We may know soon if the Cubs make a roster move to get back to 12 pitchers. Update: Piniella said before Monday night's game with the Rockies that he would consider Fontenot at short, but that DeRosa will start in right field Monday night. The Cubs still haven't called up a 12th pitcher or made any deal relating to their surplus of outfielders, but there is expected to be some movement Tuesday. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2007/06/lous-big-surpri.html
  19. Just a thought - If we bring Geovany Soto up, we will have three catchers on the roster. If you want to send Koyie Hill down, he has no options left, would have to pass through waivers, and can leave as a free agent if he is not claimed. It's not too smart to get rid of one of our catchers when we've traded one away and another is about to have season-ending surgery.
  20. Alberto Garcia was returned to Daytona from Iowa.
  21. Colvin with his second homer of the night!
  22. C - Josh Donaldson signed! http://story.scout.com/a.z?s=14&p=2&c=652389
  23. Confirmation of the previous signings (albeit from scout.com): http://cubs.scout.com/2/652029.html
  24. Could someone remind me how many active players Mesa is allowed and how many total players they can have? I thought they were allowed to have something like 25 active and 40 total or something like that.
