Well, for one, not everybody is enamored with one good year. but for that one good year to actually decrease his value? that doesn't make sense. When did it decrease? I don't remember it being higher. He wasn't exactly a hot commodity on the free agent market last year, why should he become a hot commodity on the trade market a year later. you seen the free agent market this year? Yeah, teams are willing to throw cash around (well, not all teams, only a handful have really done anything, and there are rumors NYY's payroll might decline), but they don't seem all that willing to give up good players for mediocre corner OFers. The free agent market going higher does not mean the trade market for Jacque Jones should be higher.

I never said you called him a hot commodity. But you referred to his trade value decreasing. In order for it to decrease it must have been higher before, and I don't see any evidence that it was higher. We don't know what Hendry wants. He could be asking for a heck of a lot. It might be easy to trade him for some kind of value, but Hendry might not want that kind of value. He also might be trying to treat it like Boston treats Manny, pretending to try and trade him, but asking for a lot so they are forced to keep him.

This really can't be said enough. This is exactly what he should do if Jones' value is really that low. Very true. A Jones/Murton LF platoon, Church/Jones/Theriot in CF, and Soriano with a spot of Jones/Ward in RF could be darn right excellent.

Well Church is an upgrade over Jones in the sense that Jones doesn't want to be here so we have no choice but to find another player :) I'm not sure that should be the question, but, if it is, then it's really hard to say. Church and Jones are different. From a straight rate stat perspective, Church is a pretty clear upgrade. But, Church has also been nothing more than a platoon guy, so it's hard to say what he'd do over the course of a full season. I think it's pretty clear that he'd be an upgrade in the OBP department though. Plus, he costs less money, and Jones doesn't want to be here. He's also more likely to be able to handle CF. I think he'd be a nice 2 hitter, especially if Soriano is locked into the leadoff spot. He'll get on base, and he'll be in scoring position a lot of the time on his own ability. I'm not sure about a straight Jones/Church swap, but I'd think Washington would definitely consider it.

so why do people crap their pants over Bynum/Neifi/Blanco/Pagan? Well, Ward brings at least a threat for productivity, those others are practically guaranteed outs with no side benefits.

I really like Liebs, and I was in favor of the type of deal he got from the Yankees (although I understand why Hendry didn't offer it). But you really have to wonder about what he has left. He had a nice comeback from TJS, but he really took a step back last year. He might have gotten all the milage he could out of that arm. And he just gives up a ton of HR. I'd be okay with Jones/Eyre for Lieber, only because it washes financially and they can then afford to go out and get a hitter. But they'd absolutely have to go get a hitter. Liebs may be no better than a 4.50 ERA guy now, and there is no guarantee he'll last 150 innings, which could mean substituting some guys who aren't ready. It would be nice to have a starter who doesn't walk guys. -
No they won't. There's no chance of that. The Cubs don't cut guys with guaranteed deals. It's a fine acquisition, as long as he stands no chance of starting more than a handful of games.

If he pitches like last year, he hurts you. But if he pitches like last year, and makes very little money, it's easy for the manager to put somebody in his place. If he pitches like he has at his best, he helps the team.

Marquis hasn't had one bad year though. At his best, he's been good, at his worst, he's been terrible, overall, he has been bad.

Amazing article. I don't know about the rest of you, but while the results may always be criticized, I will never doubt Jimbo's desire to get the job done ever again. I've never questioned his desire, and I don't know how anybody ever could have. All the beat writers, and most other media members, have reported forever on just how hard he works. The problem has always been the effectiveness of that hard work. Like his team and players, Jim's quite inefficient. Maximum effort, maximum dollars, minimal results.

I would not be so sure about that. $2m with a $5m bonus would be extremely team friendly in his environment. I'm guessing he'd be able to get more than $2m guaranteed this year. And if he does have a team option in there, it's going to be for way more than $5m. If Marquis is at his best, he compares favorably with guys who are getting $10m. So if he settles for under $2m this year, he's only going to give a team an option if they are willing to pay him market price next year.
