  1. I'll be sure to bump after every good Maddux outing. Don't be ridiculous. Why is it ridiculous to suggest Maddux isn't pitching like a $9 million pitcher and he is unlikely to pitch like a $9 million next year? Why is it wrong to not want to see that much of the payroll tied into a pitcher who just isn't all that great anymore? It's ridiculous to bump after a bad start and use that bad start as evidence that he shouldn't be back. It would be ridiculous if that was the only bad start. But it hasn't been. He's had plenty of bad starts the past year and a half. And overall he's been nowhere near a $9 million pitcher.

  3. Frank over Raffy? Frank has played a total of 132 games in the field in the last 6+ seasons. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=4527&context=batting http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=3897&context=batting I don't like HOF debates, or All Star debates. I really don't care about them. I was just making an observation about the plethora of pretty productive 1b/DH types who will be eligible all around the same time. Frank has 2 MVP awards, and Raffy has none. That is a big topic with many voters, at least according to their articles about who they think belong. I think that if he wins a world series in the next couple years, and has another big season, he'll be at or near the top of that list. But obviously that can change.
  4. Bagwell, Frank Thomas, McGriff, Galarraga and Palmeiro will all be competing for spots around the same time. I see some guys taking votes away from others. If the Big Hurt comes back strong and manages to win a World Series, he might have a leg up over all the others. Biggio, first reaction says know, but I think he'll probably make it eventually. His trouble is he'll probably be up for election around the time Kent goes up. And for all these guys, it remains to be seen what kind of backlash the steroid era will create for their status.
  5. I still don't see why a double switch was necessary. You could have just used a pitcher to get out of that inning, then use a pinch hitter for the pitcher. Dubois could stay in the game. There was no reason for the double switch, much like most of Dusty's double switches.
  6. Dumping Wagner wouldn't be a salary dump. Philly is in fine shape financially. It was a question of whether they should be sellers due to their place in the standings. Obviously that isn't a concern now, as they are near first in their division and atop the wild card.
  7. My wife's best friend's husband has season tickets to the Yanks down the first base line. He's a very cool guy who works in the financial field there in the Big Apple. He told me, "Anytime you want to see a Yankee game, let me know." I doubt he'd be too willing to allow me to horn in on those. They've received far less action than you might have imagined. I got my for free through work, but I would get more pretty easily.
  8. Just got my Cubs/Yankees tickets. Rejoice.
  9. Where did this come from?
  10. I haven't had high hopes for him in quite a while. I've always held out some hope that he would amount to something eventually, but for the past year that something has more or less been a servicable reliever.

  12. I wouldn't hesitate to trade Rich Hill for a really good player. But Kevin Millwood isn't really good. The Cubs don't need him nearly as much as some other teams with starting pitcher problems might.
  13. I'll kill myself if we trade Hill for the super overrated Millwood. You've made that empty threat before. Maybe if we would have traded Sisco and Guzman last year or the Year before for a closer we would have gone to the playoffs or even more... Instead we have nothing, make the trades that help your Major League team, not your triple A team..... Sisco and Guzman last year weren't Hill this year. Hill is performing at a high level, the other guys didn't do much. And Millwood isn't a difference maker. The Cubs are not a middle of the rotation starter away from winning big.
  14. Indifferent. Johnson is having a career year in the ERA department (thanks to playing in Detroit), but his peripherals numbers are down from their already weak career averages. I can't see how he would be a significant upgrade over a guy like Williams. Millwood is a better pitcher, and stands a greater chance of making a difference down the stretch. But if his presence makes it even less likely that the Cubs will improve the offense, then I just don't see the point. While I don't think Prior and Wood will be back anytime soon, I do think both should be back by August at least. And at that point, the rotation will be at full force. So basically you would simply be getting a marginal upgrade for 1-2 months, maybe 8-10 starts. I just don't see the point.
  15. Bester news, there's just about no way he isn't a free agent next season. I can think of a way. The O's drive a truckload of money to his door. With the Nats cutting into their gate revenues the O's can't afford to lose any momentum by letting Ryan walk. The O's can afford to lose the momentum with that sweet deal they signed with MLB, which guaranteed them a certain level of revenue even if DC manages to cut into their fan base.
  16. Every time I see Cubway's name, I feel compelled to try to order a 6 inch meatball with cheese, onions and green peppers on wheat. Yeah, it's always good to stay healthy by ordering that wheat bread. Do you get a diet coke with your Big Macs?
  17. First off, if I bring Hairston back, it's as the starting 2B, not a utility man. The Cubs don't need multiple $1+ utility men. I think they can bring up a starting pitcher making the minimum, maybe Hill or Pinto. And Cedeno might be ready to start at SS next year if he continues to show good numbers in AAA. So, I'd focus on corner OF, a bench player and the bullpen. If Williamson looks good by October, I'd really consider bringing him back. If Dempster has a solid season at closer, I would not hesitate to resign him. Although if somebody tries to make him a $8 million closer, then I simply offer arbitration and let him walk. I guess I'll have to think about the corner OF and bench player though.
  18. I hope Cincy sides with Miley over Dunn in their recent feud. You just can't put up with players ridiculing a manager like that.
  19. I didn't think it could get any better. I'm a Cubs fan. I don't care if Venezuela beats the Dominican or if Zambrano strikes out Rolen in a meaningless game. No good can come of this.
  20. I agree. It's not like Pujols is a lock for a 1000+ OPS. It has gone down each of the past 2 years, and it was "just" 1011 last year. It could dip to around 950-975 without many people noticing. And he could miss 10-15 games. On the flip side, while Lee has never finished a season with an OPS over 900, he's also never had an April even remotely close to this April. It's not a stretch to imagine Lee with a .300, .400, .550 line by the end of the season. And if he is able to avoid the September lows like last year, .320, .415, .585 would be within reach. No, I don't think Lee will outperform Pujols, but it's not an absurd question.
  21. Well, maybe we can start getting worried tomorrow. 2-3 today with his 5th Dope slap and maybe most importantly, 2 walks. Moore is tied for third with six home runs. Dope really isn't far off the pace of the league leaders (other than Harper). They already played today? Nice turn of events. I'm not really interested in his place on the HR leaderboard. Totals don't really tell you much. I'm much more interested in the AVG/OBP/SLG line, and even with today's numbers he's nowhere near the top of the league.
  22. How long before we start getting worried about Dopirak? Can you really be a top prospect while hitting .278 .305 .456 in high A ball? 19 K's, 3 BB. Add to that his 5 errors already this month. Does anybody disagree that those are disappointing numbers? I hope he shoots up the leaderboard this month.
  23. I see a big difference, which is why I said the logic behind the decision makes some sense. I also see the difference between exposing a mediocre prospect who might one day be your 5th starter or a setup man, and exposing a guy who many see as a top or the rotation starter. I understand that they thought he would return. But the odds are they were wrong. They didn't have to take that chance. It was a bad decision that is likely to backfire. An unnecessary risk.
  24. How am I characterizing it as something it is not? People have said Sisco was a lazy, fat slob with no motivation who is only pitching well because not being protected was a slap in the face. That, to me, is saying he wouldn't have made it here. You knew that if he was left unprotected that somebody would take him. What you didn't know was who would take him, how uncommitted that team would be to putting the best possible 25 players on the field this year, how well Sisco would pitch, and how badly the team that took him wanted him and would therefore be willing to put up with bad pitching. You knew he'd be gone. What you didn't know is if he'd come back. They let him go. They hoped they'd get him back, but they gave up their control of Sisco. They owned the next 9 years of his career but they gave it up, for nothing. No, it wasn't a simple decision. But they simply let him go. Regardless of whether they thought he'd come back, they let him go. If you let your girlfriend go on a date with Brad Pitt, you might expect her to come back, but there's no guarantee. Brad might have more space on his dance card than you though he had.
