  1. 60% gives them 89 wins, which I think might come up short of the playoffs. 60% for the most part, plus one 10 game winning streak? Deal? :thumright:
  2. Crap is subjective. I agree that he should point out areas that need improvement but his ESPN analysis is nothing like what he does on the Score. He will go out of his way to be nasty in hopes of getting a laugh from the hosts (which is almost automatic). He is much more diplomatic on ESPN. With the way the Cubs have played since September of last year, one would not have to go out of his way to be nasty when describing the action. I'm much more worried about the crappy play than I am about analysts pointing out that crappy play.

  4. He was a rookie in 2003. Yes, he won 10 last year, but he didn't pitch particularly well. He stunk earlier this year and hasn't been impressive as a Cub. I understand the faith in him. I just don't share it. His first start had a good result, but I didn't like all the deep outs and hard hit balls. I don't think he fools anybody, and I think his earlier success may have been somewhat flukish (remember, Pac Bell is a pitcher's park, so those deep flies didn't hurt as much). This isn't like the Hollandsworth in left or Neifi in short position where I am passionate about wanting change. It's more my opinion and bad feeling about Williams starting. The best thing I can say about him is he should be able to eat innings and is not bad for a 5th starter.
  5. It's also obvious that he loves to take shots at them to get a reaction. Have you listened to some of his commentary on the Score (if not check out the Score audibles section of 670thescore.com)? There is never a need to sugar coat analysis however, going out of one's way to be nasty isn't necessary. I do agree that he is still a fan but so is Mike Murphy and he dogs the Cubs on a nightly basis. This is complete BS in my opinion. I am an enormous Cubs fan, but when I don't like what I see I don't feel the need to hide it. Stone is well within his rights to say whatever he wants. There's no way he's said anything worse than I've said. The Cubs do some inexcusablely stupid crap, and they do it over and over. There is absolutely nothing wrong with an experienced professional analyst pointing that out.
  6. It's not just his potential and upside though, it's largely Hollandsworth's downside. Todd's been bad again lately. And he's been bad for a corner OF on the season as a whole. I like Murton. But I wouldn't consider him a great can't miss prospect with unlimited upside. He doesn't deserve a shot no matter who is in front of him. But, like Dubois, he deserves a shot if only Todd is in front of him, which is the case here.
  7. I don't think so. You acknowledge that they need to be getting stuff they haven't gotten yet, and that's exactly true. The window is still open, but they only way they get in is with fantastic starting pitching throughout the rotation. Although they won't win 80% of their remaining games.
  8. There is nothing refreshing about media that sugar coats stories and support one side of the story no matter the truth. Steve Stone is a huge Cubs fan. It is blatantly obvious that he still wished he could watch them everyday.
  9. What negative spin? My lord, this is ridiculous.
  10. One good sign. They scored early and got a comfortable lead, but they didn't stop there, and scored big again later. A lot of times this inconsistent offense will jump on a starter, but go to sleep against the reliever. So even if they win 6-1 they might not score for the last 7 innings, and they go into the next game more like they played at the end than the beginning of their previous win. That ties in with their OBP issues.
  11. Selective memory. His job is not to defend them. His job is to analyze.
  12. Why are people so paranoid about Steve Stone? Yes. He's doing it right now as well.
  13. I did not notice that. He's got to get a fine from the kangaroo court for that one.
  14. The whole booth made light of the situation. They pointed out that Jerry started the yapping contest, and were exactly right. They also questioned Mesa getting tossed. The Cubs don't need people sticking up for them. They need announcers to announce.
  15. There is far greater success of Mitre succeeding as a starter and Williams as a reliever than Williams as a starter and Mitre as a reliever. Williams isn't pitching well, and his relative success 2 years ago doesn't mean much. He doesn't strike many out, and gives up too many hard hit balls and fly balls.
  16. As he was running across the diamond Jerry said something to Mesa without moving his head. Mesa blew his cover and started yapping back. Initially Jerry kept jogging, and talking without looking back. Then he stopped and pointed a finger. Mesa walked toward the Cubs dugout (toward, but not near), umps got in between and tossed Mesa.
  17. Jerry is apparantly going to get Mesa's bass? I don't like this, Hairston. No need to ruffle the Pirates feathers. They are flat as a Hilton right now.
  18. Mike has apparantly tumbled down the depth chart. He was wasted in the first game of that Atlanta doublheader, and he's no longer being used like a setup man. Novoa, who has been either great or awful has somehow gotten the job without showing much. No one seems to want the set-up role. Maybe we'll have to wait for Williamson, I don't know. But Wuertz has turned into the righty version of Glendon Rusch with his WHIP. I don't know why Novoa would be considered the set-up man he hasn't done much better. I'd like Williams out of the rotation, where he hasn't impressed me at all, and into a setup role.
  19. He didn't give up any rockets that inning. The ground balls were weak. The double was softly hit as well. 30 feet to the left or right and it would have been called a lazy looping liner for an out.
  20. Unfortunately that would leave them without somebody who can play SS. They need to keep Ronny up unless they get another SS or Nomar returns. Cody Ransom can do just as good of a job sitting on the bench as Cedeno. I'd be able to live with the risk of losing Ransom once Nomar is activated. What is the 40 man situation with Murton, Greenberg and Grieve being added?

  22. Shut up. Seriously? The 2nd base umpire signaled fair ball once they started to dig into the vines. Unfortunately, they overturned the ruling and just called it a ground rule double. I don't get why he made that call. They didn't start digging until long after they stopped and put their arms up. I'm guessing he was busting Wilson for not lifting his arms high enough, but that should have been called a double much sooner.
