  1. Likely a much bigger concern than Z's pitch counts in the WBC will be. True, but it all counts.
  2. Jimmy likes what he hears. http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2004/writers/john_donovan/10/25/game2.folo/p1_edmonds_rolen_all.jpg
  3. Z doesn't agree with you. Z also probably doesn't have a problem with Dusty leaving him in a game for 130 pitches early in the season.
  4. Not that there's anything wrong with it. Somebody up here joked that he'd be switching teams soon enough as it is. Ouch. Where are you putting the odds Mr. Miles? 99%, 50%, 10%? I obviously have no information, but it sounds to me like it's at least 40%.
  5. You are accusing people of ripping on Hendry for not signing Percival, then not having the balls to comment on this topic now that he's gone. I don't know and don't care why you were not surprised. Your motives were clear and they were immature.
  6. I'm not sure exactly what this means, but I think I completely disagree. There is a whole lot of room for improvement. The bench still stinks, for one, and the OF is unacceptable. Now, there may not be much likelihood for significant improvement, but there is certainly room for improvement. My point was that the only guys likely to lose their jobs are Murton and Cedeno, not that this team couldn't be improved (especially our crappy OF). For example, we're not going to upgrade RF however much that would help us out as Jones just inked his 3 year deal. The positions we could use some improvement at are the ones that are locked up (CF, RF, bench). Hendry set up the roster so the only real improvement he can make is to replace one of the youngsters. I'd like to see the youngsters play, not get pushed aside or traded for an older and more expensive replacement with limited offensive upside. I'm as big of a fans of the youngsters as anybody. But I'm much more interested in the success of the Cubs than the development of any one kid. If he replaced Cedeno with Tejada, I wouldn't have a problem. If Abreu went to LF instead of Murton, I'm not going to be upset. And the bench is still in dire need of improvement, that can happen without bumping either of the kids.
  7. I don't understand why you have such a problem. He's basically saying I think this guy is going to be amazing if he stays healthy. How can you have an issue with that statement? There's amazing and there's "will be remembered as one of the best pitchers in the history of the game" Clemens, Maddux, and Pedro, those are guys that will be rememberred as some of the best pitchers in the history of the game. Are you really ready to throw a guy with 3 years professional experience in that group? I'm not putting him in the group. I'm saying I don't see how you can have a problem with somebody else thinking he will one day be in that group if he doesn't get injured. Would you have had a problem with somebody who watched a little bit of Clemens as a youngster and proclaimed he would be remembered as one of the greats if he stayed healthy?
  8. I was concerned until I saw who it was. Couldn't care less.
  9. The most exhilirating non-playoff series for me, ever. Sammy hit HRs 59-62 during that series, and Beck got the win in the last two games. Anyone else remember the walkoff HR by Orlando Merced? Nice videos Bixby. Merced's homer was nuts. I was a 15 year old kid sitting in the bleachers when it happened. It was pure bedlam after that, with random people foolishly celebrating by throwing everything they could get their hands on onto the field. I had an entire beer land on me. Kinda a shameful way to celebrate, but it was fun nonetheless I made a last minute road trip back from NY that weekend. Made it to the Sammy/Merced game and that place went nuts. Man, that ended up being a good weekend road trip.

  12. You just answered your own question. 4 days rest is normal, 5 days rest is already precautionary. 7 days rest is overkill and pointless, there is no benefit from those 2 extra days. Rest is far more valuable later in the season. Rest is valuable whenever you can get it. I like the extra recovery time as well as being able to control the workload of a simulated start. 5 days is already extra recovery time. 7 is overkill, pointless, and could easily lead to further abuse later, when it matters. Furthermore, while rest may be valuable whenever you can get it, it is not of the same value whenever you can get it. Rest in June/July/August is much more valuable than 2 extra days in April.
  13. 5 days rest between his first 3 starts is hardly overworking. If they do add those extra 2 days of rest early, it will probably just mean Dusty will feel more confident letting him approach 120 pitches early on. Keep him at 100 or lower, and let him go on 5, 5, 5 and 4 days rest. It will be perfectly acceptable. 120 pitches, 7 days off, 120 pitches isn't going to help a darn thing.

  15. I'll be mildly surprised if Walker, Williamson or some other currently rostered player isn't moved before spring is out. There's seems to be more talk about spring training deals coming from the Cubs this year than usual.
  16. Health wise, you're always better off not starting a real game. Realistically, it would be absurd to start the season with a 5 man rotation during that first week, with 2 off days. That rest would do next to no good when related to the entire season (in August, he's not going to feel any better because he had 2 extra days in April).
  17. I did the math earlier and it comes down to an extra start for Zambrano, Prior, Maddux, and Rusch. Baker and Rothschild have been very good at working the pitchers hard throughout the season and that includes early on, pitching is a tearing down process, the potential of two early wins of Prior (which isn't a given) and Zambrano over Williams isn't worth the potential of them wearing down in August. I see any difference between Williams and Maddux/Rusch as minimal at best. Those two added starts of a better pitcher won't decide the season compared to how the pitching staff will be treated throughout the year. And those 2 extra days rest for Zambrano won't do a damn thing to prevent the tear/wear down of the season. Rest will be valuable later, not the first week.
  18. How do you deal with Zambrano's first trip through the rotation? Do you rest him from April 3 - 11? I think that is excessive, and quite possibly could lead to a poor outing or two early on as he adjusts to normal/extra rest. If you know how to properly use his time between his starts, it could be more a benefit than a negative. Having him sit around for 10 days, won't accomplish anything, adjusting his program between the extended rest would be a benefit, beyond limiting his workload at the start of the season in cold weather. If he throws 75-90 pitches off the mound on one of those off days, working on location, spotting his pitches, and not exerting him self by going 14-15 pitches per set (inning). Have him face live hitting, he'll get work, limit fatigue, and still get to work on specialzed areas of improvement. Zambrano coming off extra rest is not good. Going with a 5 man rotation in the first week, with 2 off days would do absolutely nothing to help these guys down the line. 5 days rest is plenty.
  19. You're wrong. And when are you high on anyone, or anything, ever? edit: 3/20 is awful. have to admit that. Wow, you really added a lot to the discussion.
  20. Total and complete truth. Hendry was getting his feet put in the fire for not getting a good closer last season and then ALL of them went down with injuries, and surprisingly, you don't here much about that anymore. And I'm sure whomever has a defensive response to this statement was one of those blaming Hendry for not getting a closer. I do wish Dempster had been the closer all year though, but that's not up to Hendry to determine the lineups, that's on Dusty. A lot of people who are harshest on Hendry had no desire to see him go after Troy. In fact, the media, which keeps referring to all the heat Hendry took for not getting a real closer while talking about Troy's injury, were the ones most passionately arguing that they should have gone hard after Troy. There was a lot of relief on this board when Percival signed prior to visiting the Cubs. Quit trying to instigate fights with these ridiculous accusations.

  22. He's only hit above .260 once in his career. I don't know how you can expect him to hit .280-.290 this year. Take away april and may of last year, and he basically hit 280 over the past two years. He was essentially hurt at the start of last season. He's improved every year he's been in the majors. It's not that far of a reach. But you can't just "take away" like that. Jack isn't good, I don't get why you can't admit that. I know the Pirates have basically pushed him on the fans as the face of the franchise (at least from what I can tell on their commercials on the EI package), but seriously, you can't buy it. By the way, he hit .350 in September. His next highest month was .267 in August, but he was .242 and .239 in June and July. The numbers don't bare out the theory that he's a .280 hitter who had a bad first two months. He's been very bad offensively the majority of his career. He's slightly better than Neifi. I would hate to be a fan of a small payroll team that pays him much of anything to be the starter.
  23. Why? Is it so they can run in years without Futbol's World Cup and the Olympics?
