  1. During the Canada/South Africa game the other day Stoney was talking about how the SA manager limited Michaels and Armitage to under 50 pitches so they would be eligable to go today, so I think it is for everyone. So if a Cuban starter was dealing, would they be forced to pull the guy when he reached the limit? Would they stop the game until they pulled him?
  2. The pitch count thing is in effect to ease the fears of teams whose pitchers aren't quite ready. But do those applyl to pitchers not signed in the league? Can Cuban pitchers do as they please? What about foreign pitchers not in the league? What about Roger?
  3. May have? He probably would have made significantly more than that the last three years. Plus this gives the team leverage when talking about an extension 2-3 years from now. They can tell him they'll rip up the last couple years if he gives them his first couple free agent years.
  4. Sophomore pitch. Did I just hear that? Did he say sophomore pitch instead of second pitch?
  5. Yeah, this guy really talks a lot, and he doesn't know how to call a HR either.
  6. I've never liked Collins, even when he had his decent seasons. He's a 70-something rated QB, he throws INTs up the whazzoo and I don't know if he's ever completed 60% of his passes. I think he'll be moderately expensive, looking for a starting job, and not friendly to young QBs taking his time. I think he could be a decent backup QB, but I don't have interest in him being the Bears' backup QB. I'd rather they spend their money on other positions. I won't complain if they sign him, but I think it would be a misappropriation of funds.
  7. So what are we at, 5 days with this infection? I hope he's keeping in shape in the meantime.
  8. The Cubs are easing Prior into the mix to avoid the elbow problems that sidelined him the previous two springs. year A - He has problems in ST. year B - He has problems in ST. year C - He comes to ST after being very sick over the winter so he may be behind in conditioning. Wouldn't it be the responsible thing to do something different than year A & B??? Sure it would be the responsible thing to do. That doesn't change the fact that events surrounding this little miniseries would leave many to believe something is wrong with him physically and/or he won't be ready by opening day.
  9. These are two of the most nonsensical arguments in this debate. We can't say steroids are wrong? Yes we can. Why does it have to be a surprise to be something people talk about and act on? Why should it be a non-story. It seems to me like you are advocating a head in the sand approach to the problem or maybe you're of the belief that there is no problem, and steroids are fine and dandy.
  10. What evidence do we have about Sing being worthless against lefties?
  11. Well, yeah, it's all intertwined. There is no one reason for the decline in play by any group.
  12. Most people believe it's greatest benefit would be in the ability to bounce back after an outing.
  13. How can you say that, if the players respect the coach? (hypothetically) Isn't the players opinion of his manager more important than ours? Their respect for the manager doesn't have anything to do with his competency to get the job done.
  14. XM says it's airing the other half of the Angels split squad, which might mean the socal radio is actually broadcasting that game, and not the Cubs game.
  15. That's all well and good, but I don't think you can retroactively enforce it. It's certainly within the right of MLB to enforce these things now and moving forward, but you can't go back and say that because he used in 1999, we're going to ignore his stats from that point forward. There's no way to pinpoint the exact day he started taking steroids, just like there's no way of knowing exactly how many other players were taking them. Also consider that people that have been caught cheating in other ways - such as Joe Niekro and the nail file - have simply been suspended. They haven't had their stats marked with an asterisk or completely removed from record books as a lot of people are calling for with Bonds. I'm not saying you're calling for that type of action, but a lot of people are. As I mentioned before, I don't care about HOF, nor the * debate. But I think a suspension would be in order and it would do a lot to take care of at least half of the * debate, and might even delay HOF induction, which would have it's own affect.
  16. True, but Pete Rose was probably HOF material before he bet on baseball. I don't care about the HOF, or HOF discussions. I think HOF BS is as obnoxiously self serving as the Emmies, Oscars, Golden Globes, Grammys, etc. So I'm not going to get into a Bonds/HOF debate. I really don't care. But I do have a big problem with him and roids in the game.
  17. Pagan can be a nice 25th man, adding speed off the bench late in games. But Sing would bring far more value and should be added first. I would like both. Sing would be the main guy to platoon with Jones. Blanco Perez Hairston Mabry Sing Pagan If Walker is traded then move Hairston to 2B and bring Theriot to the bench.
  18. Good. I think if they are going to do this thing they should do it right. If it is in the best interests of baseball to have this thing every 4 years they should shorten the season by the requisit number of games and have the thing in the middle of the season with ALL THE BEST PLAYERS representing their country and the starting pitchers going without a pitch count. It works that way in socer and hocky pretty well. Why wouldn't it work in baseball. I was talking about this at a bar with a friend last night, and initially shared your opinion. Shorten the season, lengthen the all star break (but don't have an all star game). But realistically I think a post World Series tourny would be better. Guys might be exhausted, but those who didn't make it deep in the playoffs can get their rest. If you start it in early November and end in late November, guys will have plenty of time to rest for the offseason. Tons of players already compete in fall and winter ball, so it's not that much different.
  19. I've always heard that steroids fell under the same category of other drugs. But there wasn't any testing, that's why you could get away with it. If you got busted for stuff by the law, then MLB could act, but they couldn't test you, so if you stayed clear of the police, you were fine.
  20. I think it's true for some, maybe many. I think some black youth, as well as white youth, see the culture surrounding basketball and, to an extent football, as much more glamorous (although that might not be the right word) than the culture of baseball. Basketball stars are much bigger celebrities than baseball stars. And baseball is a much more humbling game. Football stars have a greater tough guy aura, while baseball players just aren't thought of as elite athletes. If you wanted to do it just for money, baseball is probably your best bet. But if you're 14, thinking over your options, the lure of the college basketball star, or college football star, or straight to the NBA star is far greater than the minor league baseball player or college baseball player. There's a very limited cool factor for those last two.
  21. How do you feel about the whole 'spitball pitchers in the Hall' argument? Obviously obtaining spit is only gross and not illegal so it's not exactly the same, but do most baseball fans resent pitchers who may or may not have cheated when they were pitching? Is that a breach of sportsmanship? I'm not even sure how I stand on the matter. Just curious what others think. (To clarify, I believe steroids = bad) Spit balls were allowed for a while. Steroids were always against the rules, they just didn't have testing. And I don't think the two are near the same category.
  22. Steroids, and pain killers, alcohol and cortisone shots are not at all in the same category. Why do we care? Because steroids are illegal and against every code of sportsmanship.
  23. Yes. Absolutely nothing should be read into this injury, due to the almost spotless health history of Kerry Wood. I'd be more worried about his arm problems (which have a history) than a routine procedure that most ALL athletes have done to clean out tissue in their knees. I think "most ALL athletes" is an exaggeration, but I agree with the tone of your post. The proceduce itself doesn't really concern me, and it's common enough to make me think it won't affect him. What I'm still concerned with is his rehab in general from the arm surgery.
