When two of their targets are overpaid drastically by a team that constantly overpays for names, it's hard to be upset with the Bears. I'm more interested in them making the right decisions than making quick decisions. I think this team could win 10 games next year without major improvements. The Bears could sweep their division, and should win at least 4 of those games. They get SF at home, AZ on the road, Buffalo at home and the Jets on the road, all very winnable. The toughest games will probably be Miami at home, Seattle at home and New England on the road and Giants on the road. They should win one of those, and could go 2-2.

Who cares what you were ranked earlier in the season? The goal is to win the championship, if you lose to a #1 early or late, you're still not a champ.

All the whining that goes on in the selection of this tournament pretty much eliminates the notion that a playoff would solve anything in football. And I'm somebody who wishes they would have a playoff (a very small one, not a bloated one like basketball). I realize it's nice that some lesser teams get a chance to get the spotlight by shocking bigger schools. But people have to learn something about perspective when they go nuts talking about teams being left out of a 65 team tournament. Shut up already. All this talk of "8-8 should be good enough to make it" should be embarrassing. And what's with all the complaints about seeding and regions. If you're a 3rd, 4th or 5th seed in a 4 region tournament, you're the 9th-20th team in the country and should just be thankful you're sport allows so many teams into their tourny. I'm not trying to pretend this isn't a fun tournament, but come on people. Think of something worthwhile to freak out about.

There is some sort of limited no-trade that I believe kicks in April 1, but I don't know the exact language. There seems to be little interest in Walker around the big leagues right now. IMO, teams know that Jim wants Walker off his team and why would anyone overpay for him given that. I like what Walker brings to the offense but his mouth is more than he's worth. When has his mouth ever cost the team games? 54% of the losses in the past 3 years have been due to a chemical deficiency. If they finally get rid of all the bad guys they will win, but not until then. The fun thing is we don't know who the bad guys are going to be until management draws up that offseason's must-dump list.

Have the Cubs won the simulated WS yet? Over the last two seasons with Wood and Prior going every game they've probably had a good chance to do so. The Cubs are 35-11 in simulated games over the last two years. JoBo and Rusch haven't held up their end of the rotation. Still 24 games over 500 is pretty nice. 35-11 is real nice, quite probably leading the NL Central, may in fact, be the NL's best record. only record...best record. same difference i guess Quit looking at W-L records, the only thing that matters is simulated WHIP.

That might be the first time I've heard that statement. That Culpepper's value is as a pocket passer? At this point in his carrer, I'm not sure how you can say otherwise. I'm pretty sure the Dolphins didn't trade for his ability to run for 400 yards but more for his ability to throw for 4700 yards and 39 TD's. Ability to do something he only did once 2 years ago when he had the game's best receiver? Culpepper is a drop back and chuck it passer, not a pocket passer.

Why? I would've liked to see Brees here. I would have liked it as well, but does it make sense to be mad that he's not? And has he signed yet? It sounded like New Orleans was ready to give him a ton of cash, and can offer a wide open QB position. The Bears don't have a wide open QB position, nor do they have a reason to spend big on another QB. And when you take into account Brees' injury, it didn't make much sense for the Bears.

No it wasn't one of my earlier points. I never said Walker = OBP. I said that the reason it seems like some people love Walker so much is because of the fear of the alternative. And that alternative is some sort of combination of Hairston and Neifi, which is certain to get on base less frequently than Walker, or a combination of Walker and Hairston. Management stresses catching the ball, but they don't say a thing about the big problem, a lack of guys who take walks and give you good at bats. Walker is no superstar, or great patient hitter. But he gives you good at bats and gets on base at a decent clip. Hairston is a suitable fallback option. But Hairston is not a suitable candidate for a starting job because he's been around for a while and has never shown any ability to stay healthy and produce like a starter over the course of a season.

It works in high school, not the majors. It'd work against the Cubs. in consecutive innings. Dude, they've worked on fundamentals, and Dusty's teams have never been bad at fundamentals. (nor have they ever gone home in early October, or have communication problems, or have bad clubhouses, or been unprofessional morons) -
Do you think that Neifi is in the mix to be the regular 2B? I haven't seen any indication of that, I think that's just paranoia. Neifi is in the mix because Hendry and Dusty have both said he is, and because if Walker is dealt, the only thing between him and the everyday job is an incredibly brittle Hairston, who has never been a quality full-time starter. That means that if Walker is dealt, and Hairston becomes the starter, we are virtually guaranteed lots of Neifi. That's not paranoia, that's paying attention. No he isn't. Walker has the higher career OBP, and he's been much more consistent over the course of his career. Hairston has never, ever, in his career put up a decent OBP over the course of a season. Walker has done it several times. On top of that, he adds some power that the Cubs won't be getting for their OF. It's not at all a case of Hairston = OBP, Walker = SLG. Walker is the better hitter, he's always been the bettter hitter. He's more productive and he'll probably be more productive again this year. And if you go with Walker, Hairston is a reasonable fallback option. If you go with Hairston, Neifi is not.

Who said they can't be good? I said they can't be counted on for consistently being good. I don't see how you can disregard their careers, and the careers of several other similar pitchers in the same category and say without a doubt they'll be good.

Really? I think it makes perfect sense. Perfect sense? I'd be interested in hearing your definition of the word perfect. They have 3 candidates for a job and have told all three they wish they weren't candidates for the job. They've let the guy who should be the lead candidate know they don't even want him on the team. The only candidate they have consistently supported in the past is the guy least qualified for the job. Nothing this team has done has made perfect sense.

We have years and years of regular season and playoff data to use to measure the relationship between intensity and injury. I nominate BK to research it. I think it's pluses far outweigh it's minuses. Attendance and TV rating have been solid. The players seem to love it. I'm sure they'll improve the logistics next time and make the tournament even better, but I fail to see how even the nay-est of naysayers can label the first WBC as anything but a success. You couldn't even watch a vital game for the US team in the US, how is that a success? It's been marred with bad umpiring by minor league umps, and the play has been extremely sloppy considering the level these guys are at. I wouldn't assume MLB will improve the logistics or make it better. To assume such a thing is unwise given the history of the organization and its decision making processes. Playoff vs regular season won't come close to providing an accurate assessment. Playoff pitchers are ready to pitch. This year's WBC pitchers have not been (at least many of the ones from MLB). That's the problem.

Pretending it's just Walker vs Hairston makes no sense. And pretending Hairston is some sort of lock to provide better OBP than Walker makes less sense. Hairston is in the Wood category when it comes to health. He won't play the full season. And he might not be any good when he does play. If Walker is dumped, and Hairston gets the job, Neifi will play a lot, and the Cubs second base production will be less than it was last year.

I'm not putting a time frame on it. But middle relievers, or all non-elite relievers (including some guys who get closing jobs for one reason or another) do have short shelf lives, and they are inconsistent.

I find it odd that Hendry is willing to so openly tell all three "competitors" he wished none of them would have had the job. That seems to go against the way they've talked about operating.

Why is it more likely? Do players get hurt more frequently in playoff games compared to regular season games? Playoff games are certainly more "intense." Something can seem intuitive without being true. I'd be curious to see some evidence for the intensity-injury relationship you're suggesting. It'll take a long time to do such a study, considering there's only a handful of games this year, and not any for many years. The biggest problem I see is not-ready pitchers overthrowing, and those same pitchers being more wild than normal and hitting guys on the hands. Anyway, I'm not going to argue about this gimmick with you. It has its pluses, it has its minuses. It's pretty poorly run and set-up, but you might not have been able to do anything differently the first time. If they do keep this gimmick up, hopefully they'll schedule it better, have teams prepared better, televise it properly and provide better umpiring. Then maybe eventually it will be more than a marketing gimmick and will provide actual quality international baseball competition.

Middle relievers, by their very nature, are shaky. I agree somewhat if you're speaking universally about middle relievers. But there's nothing about those two guy's numbers form the past two seasons that says shaky. Plus on this team Howry, and Eyre will be used more as set up men rather than middle relief. It doesn't matter how they are used, they are middle relievers. Also, the past two seasons are not the only thing you go on. If you look at middle relievers two best back to back seasons, most will look pretty good. The point is 2 good years might be all you can get out of them. Maybe you can get 3. Maybe you can get 2 good, 1 bad, and 2 more good. However it works out, they're shaky pitchers. That's why they are in the roles they are in.
